John Lovejoy (bp. 1622–1690)

Mary Osgood (bp. 1633–1675), daughter of Christopher Osgood and Mary Everett

John Lovejoy is probably the son of William, baptized on 14 July 1622 in Caversham, Oxfordshire. [1] He married Mary Osgood on 1 June 1651/[2?]. [2] He died on 7 November 1690 in Andover. [3] He married second Hannah Prichard on 12: 11m: 1676 in Andover. [4] Hannah was the widow of Sergeant William Pritchard, who was killed by Indians during King Philip's War on 2 August 1675 in Brookfield. [5] The widow Hannah died of a "cancer in throat" on 1 August 1705 in Andover. [3]

Mary Osgood was baptized on 17 March 16732/3 in St. Mary's in Marlborough, Wiltshire. [6] Mary, the wife of John, died on 15 July 1675 in Andover. [3]

Henderson argues there is a "reasonable liklihood" that John's sister Grace married William Ballard. [1]

John, age 16, and Grace Lowgie came to New England as servants on the Confidence in 1638. The spelling of their last name on the passenger list was a common variant. Grace, was probably John's sister, the daughter of William baptized on 9 April 1620 in parish of Sonning, neighboring Caversham. John's age is consistent with his baptism and a 1662 deposition that he was about forty in 1662. It is unknown what happened to Grace, but it is possible that she was the Grace who married William Ballard of Andover. [1]

John wrote his will on 1 September 1690. He mentioned his wife Hannah—and was detailed in his instructions that she be well cared for. He said that he had already given his William, his eldest living son, his portion. He left bequests to his sons Christopher, Joseph, Nathaniel and Ebenezer and mentioned his deceased son Benjamin. He also left bequests to his four daughters living daughters Sarah Johnson, Ann Blanchard, Abigail Lovejoy and Deborah Lovejoy. A codicil, written on 2 October 1690 mentions his grandchild Frances that is under his care. He refers to his brother Thomas Osgood. [7]
