Lieutenant John Giddings (1637–1690), son of George Giddings and Jane Lawrence
Sarah Alcock (c. 1643–aft. 1692), daugher of Sergeant John Alcock and Elizabeth Unknown
John Giddings was born about 1637. He died before 20 February 1690.
Sarah Alcock was born about 1643. She died after 29 March 1692.
John deposed that he was about 21 in March 1659 and 46 in March 1684. John's wife Sarah deposed that she was about 40 in March 1684. [1, 2: 143; 9: 173]
Sarah is referred to as Sarah Giddings in the 29 October 1675 division of her father's estate. [2]
John Giddings, age 21, referred to his Uncle Martine and his grandmother Tuttle in a March 1659 deposition. [1, 2: 143]
John and his father George Giddings signed a 24 November 1668 petition asking for clemency for Benjamin Marshall, their neighbor at Chebaco, accused of slanderous and threatening speeches against the court and some of the magistrates. [1, 4: 77]
John had a right to commonage in Ipswich on 13 February 1678. [3, 95]
John Giddings, [his brother] Joseph Giddings, and five others acknowledged at the 25 June 1678 court that they had offended in trying to build a meeting house—contrary to advice and orders—and asked to be forgiven. [1, 7: 245]
Inventory on the estate of Lieutenant John Giddings was taken on 20 February 1690. It included books and amounted to £269-15-10. Sarah took oath to it on 31 March 1691. On 29 March 1692 John's widow Sarah Herrick petitioned the court. She asked for her eldest son George to be granted administration and for the movables and one-third of the land for life. She asked for the rest of the estate to be divided among her children, with George receiving a double share. Administration was granted to George Giddings and William Butler of Ipswich. The 29 March 1692 petition lists the names and most of the ages of her children: George Giddings, age 28, Elizabeth Haskell, Jane Harradine, Sarah Giddings, age 20, John Giddings, age 17, Job Giddings, age 15, Solomon Giddings, age 13, Joshua Giddings, age 11, Thomas Giddings, age 9, Mary Giddings, age 6. i. George Giddings was born about 1663. He married Anna ___. Anna was born about 1670. Anna, the wife of George, died on 4 January 1729, age 58, in Ipswich. [5]
ii. Elizabeth Giddings was born say 1666. She married Mark Haskell on 16 December 1685 in Gloucester. [6]
iii. Jane Giddings was born say 1668. She married Joseph Harraden on 28 November 1691 in Gloucester. [6]
iv. Sarah Giddings was born about 1671. She married John Harraden on 7 February 1693/4 in Gloucester. [6]
v. John Giddings was born about 1674.
vi. Job Giddings was born about 1676. He died on 27 February 1708/9 in Ipswich. He married Sarah Butler.
vii. Lieutenant Solomon Giddings was born about 1678. He died on 26 June 1748, age 69, in Ipswich. [5] He married Marjory Goodhue by an intention of 9 November 1706 in Ipswich. [5] Margery was born about 1683. Marjory, the wife of Lieutenant Solomon, died on 18 June 1762, age 79, in Ipswich. [5]
viii. Joshua Giddings was born about 1680. Joshua died on __ October 1716, age 38, "on board a fishing sloop, John Davis, master, lost at sea on his return voyage from Cape Sable." [6] He married Abigail __gs on 10 December 1706 in Gloucester. [6]
ix. Thomas Giddings was born on 1683 in Ipswich. [5] He might be the Thomas who married Sarah Androuse by an intention of 1 June 1706 in Ipswich. in Ipswich. [5]
He was probably named for his uncle Thomas who died a year or two before his birth.
x. Mary Giddings was born about 1685. She married ___ York on 7 December 1704 in Gloucester. [6]
