JOSIAH WHITE (bp. 1643–1714), son of John White and Joanna Unknown

MARY RICE (1656–1733), daughter of Thomas Rice and Mary King


Josiah White was baptized on 4 June 1643 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts. [1][2] He died on 11 November 1714 in Lancaster, Worcester County, Massachusetts. [1][3] He married first Mary, the daughter of William and Anne Lewis. [1] She was baptized on 2 August 1646 and died soon after their marriage, leaving no children. [1] He married second Mary Rice of Marlborough, Middlesex County, Massachusetts on 28 November 1678. [3]

Mary, the daughter of Thomas and Mary (King) Rice, was born on 4 September 1656 in Sudbury, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. [1][4] She died on 22 August 1733 in Lancaster. [4] She married second as his third wife Thomas Sawyer on 15 July 1718. [4] Thomas, the son of Thomas and Mary (Prescott) Sawyer, was born on 2 July 1649 and died on 5 September 1736 in Lancaster. He married first Sarah Fairbanks on 11 October 1670. [4] Sarah, the daughter of John Fairbanks and Sarah Fiske, was born on 9 December 1645 in Dedham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts and died on 2 March 1671 in Lancaster. [4] Thomas married second Hannah Lewis on 21 October 1672. [4] Hannah, the daughter of William and Amy (Weld or Wells) Lewis, was born on 18 March 1649 in Roxbury (now in Boston) and died before 1718 in in Lancaster. [4] Thomas married fourth the widow Anna, the widow of Thomas Ross, on 31 December 1733. [4] Anna died in November 1753, age 73 in Sterling, Worcester County, Massachusetts. [4]

Mary's mother refers to Mary as Mary White in her will of 10 May 1710. [5]

Josiah was referred to as a carpenter in a deed of 19 January 1698/9. [1]

Josiah was chosen tax collector in Lancaster on 28 May 1684. [6, 122] He was pain 20 shillings for killing a wolf in 1688. [6, 124]

On 14 April 1704—during Queen Anne's War—Sergeant Josiah White was commander of a garrison in Lancaster. [6, 143]

On 13 May 1719 John Wilder (with the consent of his wife Sarah), Jonathan Houghton (with the consent of his wife Thankful), Bezaleel Sawyer (with the consent of his wife Judith), and Keziah White, all of Lancaster, acknowledged their late father Josiah White Sr. of Lancaster's sale of land to John Witherby of Stowe. On the same date, Bezeleel Sawyer and wife Judith and Keziah White, spinster, sold land to Jonathan Houghton, yeoman. [1]

Children of Josiah White and Mary Rice:

i. Sarah White was born on 21 October 1680 in Lancaster. [3] She married John, the son of John and Hannah Wilder, about 1698. [1] He was born on 11 July 1673 in Lancaster. [1]

ii. Deacon Josiah White was born on 15 September 1682 in Lancaster. [3] He died on 5 May 1772. [1] He married Abigail Whitcomb on 276 June 1706 in Lancaster. [1][3]

Deacon Josiah White was prominent in Lancaster. [6, 228]

iii. Captain John White was born on 29 September 1684 in Lancaster. [3] He died on 12 September 1725 in Lancaster. [3] He married Eunice, the daughter of Lieutenant Nathaniel and Mary (Sawyer) Wilder, on 20 September 1684 in Lancaster. [1]

John was a blacksmith by trade. [ELRM, 228] He was relatively affluent: inventory on his estate, taken in January 1725/6, amounted to 1,220 pounds. [6, 228]

iv. Thankful White was born on 27 March 1689 in Lancaster. She married Jonathan Houghton.

v. Jonathan White was born about 1692. He was killed by Indians on 16 July 1707, age 15, in Lancaster. [3][6, 166]

vi. Judith White was born in 1694 in Lancaster. [1] She died on 24 March 1774. [1] She married Bezaleel, the son of Thomas Sawyer. [1] He died on 25 April 1760. [1]

vii. Keziah White was born in 1696 in Lancaster. [1] She married Jonathan Willard on 17 August 1719 in Lancaster. [3] Jonathan was the son of Henry and Dorcas (Cutter) Willard. [1]
