LAWRENCE WATERS (c. 1604–1687)

ANNE LINTON (d. 1680), daughter of Richard Linton

Lawrence Waters was born abourt 1604. He died on 9 December 1687, age about 83, in Charlestown. [1][2] He married Anne Linton, the daughter of Richard Linton. [3]

Ann Waters, the wife of Lawrence, died on 6 February 1680[/1?] in Charlestown. [1][3]

Lawrence was a carpenter in Watertown. [2]

Lawerence had one of the earliest houses in Lancaster. He sold it to John Hall before 1650 and built another one near by. [2]

On 6 March 1637/8 Lawrence was bound by ten pounds for his appearance at athe next quarterly court. On 5 June 1638 Laurence and his wife were ordered to give John Finch 18 pence, as was Nicholas Theale, and Edward Lambe was ordered to give him two shillings. Lame was fined 15 shillings and six pence for his contempt and all of them were ordered to avoid dancing. [3]

Lawrence Waters was one of the early signers of the articles of agreement of Lancaster on 15 March 1653. [2] The town listed estates in 1654 for purposes of dividing land and they ranged from about 78 pounds for Henry Kerley to about 380 pounds for John White. Lawrence's estate amounted to about 277 pounds. [2] He received about 11 acres in the 1654 division of meadow. [2] He is on on 9 (1) 1654 list of townsmen. [2] On 8 September 1657 the town officials ordered the selectman to lay out to Goodman Lawrence Waters "what he yett wanteth of his just accomodacions." [2] Lawrence received a lot in the 3 February 1659 division of meadowland. [2] In October 1662 the county court released Lawrence from all military training upon payment five shillings. [2] He was a freeman in 1663. [2]

After the Indian massacre of 1676, Lawrence, his wife and his son Samuel and Samuel's family sought refuge in Charlestown, where his son Stephen took responsibility for them to the authorities. [2] On 12 October 1676 Lawrence petitioned the court to order payment due him of seven pounds, 15 shillings and four pence, he being aged and blind. [3]

On 12 October 1676 Lawrence requested payments due him from the county, saying that he was "aged and blind." [2]

Anne Waters received ten acres of land in Lancaster from her father in trust for her son Joseph. [2]

On 2 June 1671 the Middlesex County court heard a motion from Lawrence Waters, Jr., Stephen Waters, John Skeathe, Joseph Waters, and Jacob Waters concerning the estate of their brother Adams. They wished their equal shares in the estate to remain in the hands of the administrators while their parents, Lawrence and Ann Waters, were living, and to be used for their care and comfort. [3][4]
