MICHAEL METCALF (1645–1693), son of Michael Metcalf and Mary Fairbanks
ELIZABETH FULLER (1648–1733), daughter of Lieutenant Thomas Fuller and Hannah Flower
Michael, the son of Michael Metcalf and Mary Fairbanks, was born on 21 January 1644/5 in Dedham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. [1] He was baptized there five days later. [1] He died on 1 September 1693 in Dedham. [1][2] He married Elizabeth (Fuller) Kingsbury on 19 September 1672 in Dedham. [1][3][4]
Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Fuller and Hannah Flower. [3][5] She was born on 1 April 1648 in Dedham. [5] Elizabeth, the wife of Michael, died on 24 October 1732 in Dedham. [1][5] She married first John Kingsbury on 29 November 1666. [3][5] John, the son of Joseph and Millicent Kingsbury, was born on 15 August 1643 in Dedham and died on 30 May 1669. [3]
Michael is on a 15 May 1690 list of freemen in Dedham. [6]
Michael Metcalf, yeoman or husbandman of Dedham died intestate. An inventory was taken on 17 November 1693 and attested to by his widow Elizabeth on 29 March 1694. She posted bond the same day. Another inventory taken on 22 March 1701 amounted to £149-05-00. The division, ordered on 11 April 1701, mentions the widow Elizabeth and Michael's children Michael Metcalf, the eldest son, Thomas Metcalf, Mary Woodcock, and Sarah, Eleazar, Hannah, and Daniel Metcalf. i. Michael Metcalf was born on 9 May 1674. He died on 27 April 1736 in Dedham. [1]
Citing his infirmities and the "many examples of mortality set daily before me"—probably from scarlet fever, Michael Metcalf, husbandman of Dedham, made his will on 31 December 1735. His witnesses testified on 24 May 1738, inventory was taken on 25 May 1738, and his brother Thomas presented it on [?] June 1738. Michael mentioned his brother Thomas Metcalf of Needham and his second son Michael; his sister Elizabeth Damon of Dorchester; his brother Eleazar of Wrentham; his sister Mary Woodcock of Needham and her husband Jeremiah Woodcock; his sister Hannah Stedman; Sarah Tomson, the eldest daughter of his deceased sister Sarah Gay; Elizabeth and Abigail Gay, daughters of Sarah Gay. He left 100 pounds for the use of a school. He named his brother Thomas his executor. Elizabeth Damon was paid seven pounds out of his estate and Hannah Stedman was paid one pound, both for nursing Michael. [7]
ii. Mary Metcalf was born on 3 October 1676. She married Deacon Jeremiah Woodcock on 5 January 1698/9 in Dedham. [1][2][5] Jeremiah, the son of John and Sarah (Smith) Woodcock, was born on 6 January 1675/6 in Rehoboth, Bristol County, Massachusetts and died on 27 September 1752 in Needham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. iii. Lieutenant Thomas Metcalf was born on 3 January 1678/9. He married Lydia Chickering. [2][5] Lydia, the daughter of Nathaniel and Lydia Chickering, was born on 1 December 1678 in Dedham. [2][5] She died on 18 December 1770 in Needham. [5]
iii. Sarah Metcalf was born on 26 April 1682. She died before 31 December 1735. She married John Gay. [2][5] John, the son of John and Rebecca (Bacon) Gay, was born on 2 January 1684/5 in Dedham and died there on 23 March 1753. [5] John and Sarah are buried in the Old Village Cemetery in Dedham. [5]
iv. Eleazar Metcalf was born on 12 February 1684/5. He married Judith Rockwood.
v. Hannah Metcalf was born on 17 April 1686. She married first Thomas Stedman of Brookline, Norfolk County, Massachusetts on 18 November 1729. [2][5] She married second Timothy Kingsbury. [5]
vi. Elizabeth Metcalf married John Damon of Dedham. [2][5]
Elizabeth was named in her brother Michael's will, and both she and John Damon signed the receipt for her legacy. [2]
John and Elizabeth's son George graduated from Harvard and was the fourth minister in Tisbury, Dukes County, Massachusetts. [2]
vii. Daniel Metcalf was born on 25 June 1690. He died there on 29 January 1718/9 in Dedham, probably unmarried. [1][5]
