JOHN COLEMAN (d. by 1770)

REBECCA REED (1729–aft. 1774), daughter of George Reed and Sarah Whitmarsh


John Coleman died before 26 February 1770. John of Dighton, Bristol County, Massachusetts married Rebecca Reed of Dighton after 10 January 1752 (intention) in Dighton. [1][2]

Rebecca, the daughter of George Reed and Sarah Whitmarsh, was born on 16 July 1729 in Dighton. [2][3] The widow Rebecca Coleman married Sylvester French of Dighton on 30 January 1770 in Berkley, Bristol County, Massachusetts. [3][4, 146][2] Sylvester was probably the son of Ebenezer and Keziah French, born on 11 June 1735 in Berkley. [4, 132] Sylvester died on 14 January 1774 in Berkley. [4, 27] Sylvester of Berkeley married first Margaret Pool of Berkley on 30 March 1757 in Berkley. [4, 41]

The probate court ordered John Coleman of Dighton's inventory to be taken on 26 February 1770. It was presented on 30 April 1770. John's widow Rebecca was the administratrix. She posted bond on 26 February 1770. [5]

Sylvester French of Berkley made his will on 13 January 1774; the court ordered his inventory to be taken on 26 January 1774. Sylvester made bequests to his wife Rebecca and his children Thomas, Rebecca, Margaret, and Isaac French. He named his brother-in-law James Macomber of Taunton his sole executor. [6] The children Sylvester named were the children of his first wife Margaret. [4, 27]

Children of John Coleman and Rebecca Reed:

i. Deborah Coleman was born on 3 April 1755 in Dighton, Bristol, Massachusetts. She married Apelles Slocum.

ii. John Coleman was born on 10 July 1757 in Dighton. [3] He died on 17 November 1815, age 58 years, four months, and eight days, in Templeton, Worcester County, Massachusetts. [7] He married Joanna Metcalf on 4 November 1779 in Templeton. [7] Joanna, the daughter of George and Joanna (Pond) Metcalf, was born on 2 February 1763 in Weymouth, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. [8] She died on 23 March 1831, age 68 years, one month, and 22 days, in Templeton. [7]

iii. Alanson Coleman was born on 17 April 1764 in Dighton. [3] He married Philena Briggs of Berkley on 17 April 1787 in Berkley. [1][4, 128, intention 23 December 1786]
