APELLES SLOCUM (1756–aft. 1830), son of Captain Simon Slocum and Abigail Metcalf
DEBORAH COLEMAN (1755–by 1810), daughter of John Coleman and Rebecca Reed
Apelles, the son of Lieutenant Simon and Abigail (Metcalf) Slocum, was born on 10 June 1756 in Wrentham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. [1] He was baptized on 29 September 1756 in the First Congregational Church in Franklin, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. [2] He probably died after 1830. Appelles of Wrentham married Deborah Coleman of Berkley, Bristol County, Massachusetts after 16 August 1774 (intention) in Berkley. [3][4]
Deborah is probably the daughter of John and Rebecca Coleman, born on 3 April 1755 in Dighton, Bristol, Massachusetts. [5] She probably died by 1810.
The evidence that Deborah is the daughter of John and Rebecca Coleman is circumstantial. Her marriage intention says that she is of Berkley and the daughter of John and Rebecca of Dighton appears to be the only Deborah of the right age in the vicinity of Berkley. Berkley was part of the neighboring towns of Dighton and Taunton until 1735. John and Rebecca Coleman had a son with the unusual name of Alanson, who was married in Berkley. Apelles and Deborah named one of their sons Alanson.
Apelles was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and he was promoted to lieutenant. [3]
In 1790 Apelles and Deborah lived in Templeton, Worcester County, Massachusetts in a household with one (white) male over 16, five males under 16, and three females. [6]
Apelles and Deborah lived on a farm in Templeton and Apelles was a carpenter and a joiner. [3]
Apelles and [perhaps] Deborah moved to Vermont, probably near Woodstock. [3]
In 1810 Apelles was living in Eden, Orleans County (now Lamoille County), Vermont in a household with one male over 45, one female 26 to 44, one male 16 to 18, and two females under ten. This suggests that Deborah had died by then. In 1820 Apelles was living in Eden in a household with one male over 45, one female 26 to 44, and two females under ten. In 1830 he was living in Eden in a household with one male 70 to 79, one male 20 to 29, one female 40 to 49, and two females 15 to 19. [6]
