JONATHAN TOBEY (1718–by 1755), son of Jonathan Tobey and Remember Perry

DEBORAH SWIFT (b. 1720), daughter of Thomas Swift and Thankful Morey


Jonathan, the son of Jonathan and Remember Tobey, was born on 6 August 1718 in Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. [1] He died before 15 January 1755, when administration was granted on his estate. [2] Jonathan Tobey of Sandwich married Deborah Swift of Plymouth on 19 February 1740 in Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. [1][3]

Deborah, the daughter of Thomas and Thankful Swift, was born on the "first or second" of September 1720 in Plymouth. [3] She died after 25 July 1755, when she was granted guardianship of her children. [4]

i. Elizabeth Tobey was baptized on 11 April 1742. She married Moses Barlow of Rochester, Plymouth County, Massachusetts on 28 June 1767 in Sandwich. [1][5] Moses, the son of Joseph and Abigail (Wyatt) Barlow, was born on 8 May 1733 in Rochester. [5] He was baptized there on on 15 February 1737. [5]

Moses and Elizabeth moved to Hardwick, Worcester County, Massachusetts by 1782 and, probably after 1790, from Hardwick to Barnard, Windsor County, Vermont. [6]

Moses and Elizabeth had children Betsey, Deborah, Jonathan, Lemuel, Moses and Nabbe baptized on 29 September 1782 in Hardwick. [6][7]

ii. Jonathan Tobey was baptized on 12 June 1743. He died before 6 June 1781. [4] He married Sarah Lewis of Sandwich on 27 December 1764 in Sandwich. [1]

Jonathan's son Jonathan was apprenticed to his uncle Thomas Tobey, cordwainer of Rochester on 6 June 1781 and his mother Sarah signed the articles of indenture. [4]

iii. Mercy Tobey was baptized on 9 June 1745.

iv. Bathsheba Tobey was baptized on 23 August 1747. Basheba Fish, the wife of Seth, born 1747, died on 17 May 1813, age 66 in East Windsor, Windsor County, Vermont and is buried in the Sheddsville Cemetery in Sheddsville, Windsor County. [8] She married Seth Fish on 5 December 1765 in Sandwich. [1] Seth, the son of Seth Fish Jr. and his wife Patience, was born in March 1743/4 in Sandwich. [1] He was baptized there on 18 March 1743/4. [1]

The inscription on Bathsheba's gravestone says: [9]

Mrs. Bathsheba wife of Mr. Seth Fish Died May 17th 1813. Aged 66 years.

v. Lydia Tobey was baptized on 16 July 1749. She died after 1811, when she was mentioned in her second husband's will. [10] Lydia Tobey married first Micah (Michael) Blackwell on 23 November 1766 in Sandwich. [1] Michael, the son of Mordecai (Joshua, Joshua, Michael) Blackwell, was born on 28 December 1741 and died on 30 September 1781. [10] Lydia married second Joshua Freeman on 15 May 1796 in Sandwich. [10]

vi. Deborah Tobey was baptized on 30 June 1751 in Sandwich. She died on 5 September 1833 in Barnard. She married Israel Tupper.

vii. Deacon Thomas Tobey was baptized on 3 June 1753. He died on 2 May (or June, headstone) 1831 in Rochester, Plymouth County. [5] He is buried in the Barlow Cemetery in Mattapoisett, Plymouth County (originally a part of Rochester). [9] He married first Betty Norton on 17 October 1776 in Rochester. [5] Betty, the wife of Thomas, died on 18 June 1779 in Rochester. [5] Thomas married second Abigail Smith of Sandwich on 19 February 1780 in Rochester. [5] Abigail was probably the daughter of John Smith, Jr. and his wife Abigail, born on 3 March 1759 in Sandwich. [1] Deacon Thomas married third Keziah Lincoln on 5 October 1794 in Rochester. [5] Keziah might be the daughter of George and Keziah (Lincoln), born on 1 April 1756. [11] Deacon Thomas married fourth Marcy Pope of New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts on 4 November 1801 in New Bedford or Rochester. [5][12] They made their intention on 26 October 1801 in Rochester. [5] Deacon Thomas married fifth Mehitable "Hetty" Willis on 8 September 1814 in Rochester or New Bedford. [5][12] Hetty, the widow of Deacon Thomas died on 31 August 1838, age 75, in Rochester. [5] She is buried in the Barlow Cemetery. [9]

Thomas was a cordwainer.

viii. Lemuel Tobey was baptized on 24 August 1755. He married Joanna Ellis about 1780. [13] Joanna the daughter of Rowland (Malachai, Matthias, John) and Joanna (Tupper) Ellis, was born on 22 October 1759. [13] She was baptized on 10 February 1760. [13] She died on 1 June 1836. [13]
