ISRAEL TUPPER (1744–1817), son of Samuel Tupper and Hannah Fish

DEBORAH TOBEY (bp. 1751–1833), probably daughter of Jonathan Tobey and Deborah Swift

Israel, the son of Samuel Tupper and Hannah Fish, was born on 9 May 1744 in Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. [1][2] He died on 3 March 1817, age 73, in Barnard, Windsor County, Vermont and is buried in the Barnard Village Cemetery. [2][3] He married Deborah Tobey on 24 November 1770. [2]

Who was Deborah Tobey? The Tupper Family Association asserts that she was the daughter of Deacon Joshua Tobey and Maria Tobey of Mattapoisett. However, Deborah, the daughter of Joshua and Maria, was baptized with her siblings on 6 September 1772 in Sandwich, almost two years after Israel and Deborah married. [1] Given that Deborah was married in 1770, it is likely that she was born by 1754. Given that she had her last child in 1793 it is likely that she was born after 1748. The only Deborah Tobeys, born in Massachusetts between 1748 and 1754, that I can find are Deborah, daughter of Jonathan and Deborah, baptized on 30 June 1751 in Sandwich and the Deborah, daughter of Elisha and Desire, baptized with her brother Lemuel on 5 July 1752 in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts. [1][4] A Dartmouth record says that Deborah and Silas Swift of Dartmouth published their intention to wed on 17 December 1765. [4] This Deborah is surely the Deborah of Dartmouth. In his will of 25 April 1781, Elisha Tobey names Deborah first of his children (before Lemuel), suggesting that she might have been at least a couple of years old when she was baptized, and he refers to her as Deborah Swift. [5] Thus, it appears likely that our Deborah is the daughter of Jonathan Tobey. Deborah's death record suggests that she was born in 1747, but this is likely imperfectly accurate. The unusual first name of Deborah's first child might be in honor of her grandmother Remember Perry. Deborah's sister also went to Barnard, suggesting an association between Israel and Deborah's family.

Deborah Tobey was baptized on 30 June 1751 in Sandwich. [1] Deborah, the wife of Israel, died on 5 September 1833, age 86, in Barnard. [3]

Israel was a school teacher. [2] A family story has it that he moved to Barnard to prevent his sons from becoming sea-faring men. [2]

Israel came to Barnard about 1789. On 3 August 1789 Israel bought the western half of lot number 272 of 50 acres. On 30 November 1796 he bought the eastern half. Shortly before his death he conveyed the entire lot to his son Edumd. [6]

In 1790 Israel headed a household in Barnard with a male 16 and over, three males under 16 and four females—probably, Israel and Deborah and their children Rebecca, Thomas, Robert, Israel, Hannah, and Sarah. In 1810 Israel headed a household with male and female over 45 and a male and a female 16 to 25—probably Israel and Deborah and their children Deborah and Edmund. [7]

Deborah may have lived in Barnard with her son Edmund after her husband's death.

Children of Israel Tupper and Deborah Tobey:

i. Remember Tupper was born on 10 September 1771 in Sandwich. [1][2] She died at age two. [2]

ii. Rebecca Tupper was born on 14 November 1773 in Sandwich. She was baptized there on 8 May 1774. She died on 26 June 1814 in Barnard. She married Elijah Aikens.

iii. Captain Thomas Tupper was born on 12 or 3 March 1776 in Sandwich. [2] He was baptized there on 28 April 1776. [1] He died of dysentery on 13 September or 6 October 1865 in Bakersfield, Franklin County, Vermont. [2][3] He married Sarah (Sally) Stebbings of Barnard on 15 September 1801. [2] Sarah was born on 9 October 1780 and she died on 8 July 1852. [2]

Thomas and Sarah are buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Bakersfield. The inscriptions on their gravestones say: [8]

Capt. Thomas Tupper died Oct. 6, 1865.

Sarah, wife of Thomas Tupper died July 8, 1852. Aged [covered by earth].

Thomas shows up in the census as head of a household in Bakersfield every decade from 1820 to 1860. In 1850, he was 74 and living with Sally, aged 70, Jackson, aged 32, Sarah, aged 35, Adaline, aged 30, Harriet, aged 47, and James [illegible], aged 18 months. In 1860 he was 84 with a personal estate of 2,000 dollars and he lived with Harriet, aged 55. [7]

Thomas Tupper of Bakersfield, being in "an infirm state," made his will on 27 January 1858. His inventory was presented on 9 December 1865 and probate was on 22 October 1866. He left his estate to his sons Franklin, Edward, Ransselear, Solon, and Jackson Tupper; his grandson, John B. Tupper, son of Lewis Tupper; and his daughters Harriet Tupper, Sarah Tupper, Adaline Stevens, and Dulcena [?] Swandale. He named his son Solon his executor. [9]

iv. Robert Berkley Tupper was born on 6 May 1779 in Sandwich. [2] He was baptized there on 11 July 1779. [1] He died on 22 May 1856 in Rochester, Windsor, Vermont. [2][3] He married first Tryphena Hodgkins. [2] Tryphena, the daughter of Thomas and Tryphena Hodgkins, was born on 22 July 1788 in Pittsfield, Rutland County, Vermont. [3] She died on 29 September 1826, age 39, in Rochester. [2][3] Robert married second Mary C. (Jones) (Farrington) Burns of Lyndeborough, New Hampshire on 1 November 1827 in Lyndeborough. [2][10][11] Mary, the daughter of Dr. Benjamin and Elizabeth (Cleaves) Jones, was born on 20 January 1781 in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts. [3][10] She died on 1 or 4 March 1860, age 79, in Stockbridge, Windsor County, Vermont. [3][8] She married second ___ Burns. [11]

Robert is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Rochester; Tryphena is buried in the Tupper Cemetery in Rochester. However, the inscription on Robert's gravestone says: [8]

Robert B. Tupper, Esq. died May 22, 1856 Æ 77 / Tryphena H. his wife died Sept. 29, 1826 Æ 39 / Mary his wife died Mar. 9, 1860 Æ 79.

Robert lived in Rochester. [2] He was the Justice of the Peace there in 1817 and 1818. [12]

v. Israel Tupper was born in June 1781 in Sandwich. [2] Israel, the son of Israel, Jr. and Deborah, was baptized on 14 July 1782 in Sandwich. [4] He died on 10 July 1854 in Canton, St. Lawrence County, New York. [2] He married Mary ("Polly") Parmenter on 21 December or 24 November 1803. [2] Polly, the daughter of Nathan Parmenter and Dorcas Aikens of Barnard, was born on 15 January 1784 and died on 19 November 1856 in Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence County, New York. [2]

Israel was an early settler of Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, New York, arriving by 1810. He moved to Canton—about 11 miles away—between 1830 and 1840. Polly's parents, and her uncle Nathaniel Aikens and aunt Margaret Aikens all went from Barnard to Potsdam, as did Israel's sister Sarah.

According to the census, in 1810 Israel headed a house hold in Potsdam with two males and a female aged 16 to 25 and three girls under ten. In 1820 he headed a household in Potsdam with a man and woman aged 26 to 44 and six children under 16. In 1830 he headed a household in Potsdam with a man and woman aged 40 to 49, a woman aged 20 to 29 and four people under 20. In 1840 he headed a household in Canton with a man and woman aged 50 to 59, a man aged 20 to 29, a boy aged 15 to 19 and a girl under five. In 1850 Israel, a 68-year-old mason, lived in Canton with Mary Tupper, aged 67, Francis Tupper, aged three, John Paine, aged 31, Polly Paine, aged 28, and Marion Paine, aged seven. [7]

vi. Hannah Tupper was born in 1785 in Sandwich. [2] She died on 5 February 1832 in Pomfret, Windsor County, Vermont. [2][3][13] She married Caleb Bates Williamson of Pomfret on 3 June 1803. [2][13] Caleb, the son of Caleb (Caleb, George, Timothy) Williamson and Mercy Jackson, was probably born in Canterbury, Windham County, Connecticut in 1782. [13] He died in 1822. [13]

Caleb was a farmer in Pomfret. [13]

Hannah was appointed administratrix of Caleb's estate on 12 July 1823. [13] She headed an eight-person household in Pomfret in 1830. [7]

vii. Sarah Tupper was born on 13 April 1888 in Barnard. [2] She died on 16 January 1882. [2] She married Jonathan Swift on 18 January 1810. [2] Jonathan, the son of Thomas (Thomas) Swift and Margaret Aikens, was born on 11 January 1787 in Barnard. [6] He died on 13 April 1842, age 55. [8]

Jonathan and Sarah are buried in the Garfield Cemetery in Potsdam. The inscriptions on their gravestones say: [8]

Jonathan Swift died ... aged 55 years.

Sarah wife of Jonathan Swift Died July 16 1882 Aged 94 Years.

viii. Deborah Tupper was born in 1790 in Barnard. [2] She married first John Abner Tyler of Hanover, Grafton County, New Hampshire on 28 February 1812. [3] She married second as his second wife Heman Prior on 3 May 1841. [14] Heman, the son of Ebenezer and Catherine (Simons) Prior, was born on 7 August 1769 in Enfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. [14] He married first Submit Sanderson on 5 October 1789 in Chester, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. [14] Submit, the daughter of Robert and Rhoda (Steel) Sanderson, was born on 26 June 1769 in Springfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. [14]

Deborah is buried in the Union Cemetery in Vermontville, Franklin County, Vermont. Her gravestone says: [8]

Deborah Tyler Prior 1792–1873.

Deborah lived in Malone, Franklin County, New York. [2][14]

ix. Edmund Tupper was born on 17 September 1793 in Barnard. [2] He died on 17 March 1880. [2] He married first Roxy Aikens on 10 January 1815 in Barnard. [2][3] She was born in 1798 and died in 1846. [2] He married second Mrs. Rosetta E. (Angell) Morrill on 6 February 1852 in Barnard. [2][3] Rosetta, the daughter of Daniel and Mercy (Perkins) Angell, was born about 1821 in Stockbridge, Vermont. [3][6] Rosetta died of cancer on 13 February 1876, age 54, in Barnard. [2][3] She married first William Morrill on 29 October 1848 in Randolph, Vermont. [3]

Edmund is buried in the South Yard Cemetery in Wilton, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. The inscription on his gravestone says: [8]

Edmund Tupper died Mar. 16, 1880, AE. 86 ys. 6 ms.

According to the census, in 1820 Edmund headed a household in Barnard with a man aged 26 to 44, a woman over 45 (perhaps his mother), a woman aged 16 to 25, a boy aged ten to 15, and a boy and girl under ten. In 1830 he headed a household with a man and woman aged 30 to 39, a woman aged 70 to 79 (perhaps his mother), a girl aged 15 to 19, a boy aged ten to 14, two girls aged five to nine, and a girl under five. In 1840 he headed a household with a man and woman aged 40 to 49, two girls aged 15 to 19, a girl aged ten to 14, a boy aged five to nine, a girl and a boy under five, and a "free colored" male aged ten to 23. [7]

According to the census, in 1860 Edmond was living in the household of [David] Hartwell Angell, a 35-year-old farmer along with Sarah Angell, aged 35, and George Angell, aged three. Edmund is described as a 65-year-old farm laborer. [7] David Hartwell Angell was Rosetta's brother and his wife Sarah was the daughter of Edmund and Roxy. [6] In 1870 Edmund was living in the household of John Shuttleworth, a 25-year-old farmer, along with Lorona Shuttleworth, aged 25, Edward Shuttleworth, aged four, and Alfred Shuttleworth, aged three months. Edmund is described as a 75-year-old farmer. [7] Lorana was the daughter of Edmund and Roxy. [6] Rosetta was living in the household of Albert Adams, aged 20, along with Delia Adams, aged 20, William Tupper, aged ten, and Ella Adams, aged two. [7] Delia was Rosetta's sister. [6]

It is curious that Edmund and Rosetta were not living together in 1860 or 1870. Perhaps they divorced as Rosetta's death record calls her Rosetta (Angell) Merrill. [3]
