JONATHAN TOBEY (1662/4–1741), son of Thomas Tobey and Martha Knott

REMEMBER PERRY (1676–1732), daughter of Ezra Perry and Elizabeth Burge


Jonathan Tobey was born in 1662/4. He died on 22 July 1741, age 75, in Sandwich. [1] He married Remember Perry about 1693. [2] Jonathan and Remember are buried in the Old Town Cemetery in Sandwich. [3]

Remember, the daughter of Ezra and Elizabeth (Burge) Perry, was born on 1 January 1676. [2] Remember, the wife of Jonathan, died on 3 November 1732, age 58, probably in Sandwich. [4]

Remember is called "my daughter Remember" in her father's will. [2]

Jonathan was on a March 1730 list of heads of households in Sandwich. [5]

Jonathan Tobey of Sandwich made his will on 6 September 1738; it was proved on 4 August 1741. [6]

 I, Jonathan Tobey of ... Sandwich ... husbandman being at present in tolerable health of Body and of Disposing Mind and Memory ... do make this my Last will and Testament
   Item.  I will and bequeath to my Daughters Deborah, Mariah, Remember, and Abigail five pounds a piece.
   Item.  I will and bequeath to my Grandson John Clark Twenty shillings.
   Item.  I will and bequeath to my Grandson Jonathan Clark the sum of four pounds money.
   Item.  I will and bequeath to my Daughter Mercy the Use and Improvement of my new house chamber During Life and a feather bed and furniture and one cow.
   Item.  I will and bequeath to my Daughter Mary the sum of Fourty pounds in money and a feather bed & Furniture and one cow.
   Item.  I will and bequeath to my sons Samuell, Jonathan, and Nathaniel their respective Heirs and assigns forever all my Estate in Housing Lands and Meddows whatsoever i also give them my said three sons all my Tools and Utensils that are used about Husbandry and my Arms and Ammunition and one feather bed and furniture Equally among them.
   Item.  I will and bequeath the Rest of my household Goods To my Daughters Mercy and Mary equally.
   Item.  My will is that after the before mentioned Legacies Funeral Expenses and Just Debts are paid what Remains of my Stock of Creatures shall be Equally Divided betwixt my said three sons and my Daughters Mercy and Mary and I do constitute and appoint my Eldest son Samuell to be Executor of this my Last Will and Testament.   In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand seal the sixth day of September Anno Domini one thousand seven hundred and thirty eight.

Children of Jonathan Tobey and Remember Perry: Births recorded in Sandwich as the children of Jonathan and Remember. [7]

i. Deborah Tobey was born on 30 December 1694. She might be the Deborah Tobey of Sandwich who married Ebenezer Nye of Sandwich on 29 December 1720 in Sandwich. [1] Ebenezer, the son of John (Benjamin) and Esther (Shed) Nye, was born on 23 September 1687 in Sandwich. [8] He died on 30 August 1748. [8] He is buried in the Old Town Cemetery in Sandwich. [3]

Ebenezer made his will on 24 December 1748[!] and it was proved on 20 December 1748. He mentions his wife Deborah (whom he named his executor) and his children, including a daughter named Remember. [8]

ii. Elizabeth Tobey was born on 15 September 1697. She probably died before 2 December 1731. She is probably the unnamed Tobey of Sandwich who married Cornelius Clark of Rochester on 23 Mary 1723 in Sandwich. [1] Cornelius, the son of John Clark, was baptized on 28 August 1698 in Beverly. [9] Cornelius married Susannah Dunham of Plymouth on 2 December 1731 in Plymouth. [10] Susannah, the widow of Cornelius, died on 26 March 1791 in Rochester. [10]

iii. Maria Tobey was born on 12 January 1700/1. She died on 10 June 1790 in Tisbury. [11] She married Benjamin Foster on 31 December 1721 in Sandwich. [11] Benjamin, the son of Joseph (John, Thomas) and Rachel Foster was born on 16 November 1699 in Sandwich. [1][11] He died on 10 March 1769. [11]

Benjamin and Maria moved to Tisbury about 1730, where Benjamin was a blacksmith. [11]

Benjamin and Maria named two of their children Jonathan and Remember. [11]

iv. Remember Tobey was born on 16 August 1703. She died on 11 November 1788. [11] Remember Tobey, Jr. of Sandwich married Cyrano Tilton on 13 January 1730/1 in Chilmark. [12] Cyrano, the son of John (Samuel, William) and Sarah (Mayhew) Tilton, was born on 10 December 1700 in Chilmark. [11,12] He died on 24 February 1791. [11]

v. Captain Samuel Tobey was born on 11 September 1707. He died on 23 November 1791 in Sandwich. [13] He married Experience Ellis on 3 April 1735 in Sandwich. [13] Experience was the daughter of Matthias (Matthias, John) Ellis and Thankful Bassett, the daughter of William and Rachel (Willison) Bassett. [13] She was born on 20 February 1717/8, baptized on 16 February 1717/8 and died on 13 October 1803. [13]

Samuel and Experience were admitted to full communion in the church in Sandwich on 28 March 17141/2. [13]

Samuel made his will on 19 April 1791; it was proved on 20 December 1791. [13]

vi. Mercy Tobey was born on 6 October 1710.

vii. Abigail Tobey was born on 28 May 1713. She may be the Abigail Tobey of Sandwich who married Ensign Dimock after 26 September 1731 (intention) in Barnstable. [14]. Ensign, the son of Joseph and Lydia (Fuller) Dimock, was born on 8 March 1709 in Barnstable. [15] It has been argued that this Abigail married Thomas Robinson, died on 9 November 1790 and is buried in the Old Scotland Cemetery in Scotland, Windham county, Connecticut. [3]

viii. Mary Tobey was born on 2 February 1715. Mary Tobey of Sandwich married Salathiel Tilton on 17 March 1741/2 in Chilmark. [12] She died on 13 September 1803. [11] Salathiel, the son of Josiah (Samuel, William) and Bathsheba (Mayhew) Tilton, was born on 4 May 1706 in Chilmark. [11,12] He died in 1774. [11]

ix. Jonathan Tobey was born on 6 August 1718 in Sandwich. He died before 15 January 1755. He married Deborah Swift.

x. Nathaniel Tobey was born on the "last day of June" 1721. Nathaniel Tobey of Sandwich married Elizabeth Godfrey of Chatham on 17 October 1756 in Chatham. [16]
