MATTHEW GIBBS (d. 1697)

MARY BRADISH (say 1632–1660), daughter of Robert Bradish and Mary Howes


Matthew Gibbs died in 1697 in Sudbury, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. [1] He married Mary Bradish by 1652. [2] Matthew and Mary are buried in the North Cemetery in Wayland, Middlesex County. [1]

Mary, the daughter of Robert and Mary Bradish, was born say 1632. [2] She died in 1660 in Sudbury. [1]

Mary Gibbs was admitted to the Charlestown Church on 23 September 1652. [2]

Matthew was one of the inhabitants of Sudbury who signed a petition for tax relief for the town during King Philip's War. [3]

During King Philip's War, the town of Sudbury distributed its ammunition to some of its residents, including Matthew. [4, 205]

Matthew was one of the inhabitants of Sudbury who asked the General Court for compensation after Sudbury men accompanied Sir William Phipps on his ill-fated expedition of 1690 to capture Quebec. The expedition failed and many men were lost to small pox. [4, 271]

Matthew's estate was settled in 1697. [5]

Children of Matthew Gibbs and Anne Bradish:

i Matthew Gibbs (twin) was born on 17 December 1656 in Sudbury. [5] Michael of Framingham married first Mary Moore in 1678. [5][6] Mary, the daughter of John Moore, died on 26 September 1705. [6] Matthew married second Mary's sister Elizabeth. [5][6]

On 22 November 1675, at the request of the Governor and Council, Sudbury impressed nine men for King Philip's War and Matthew was one of them. [4, 205]

Matthew Gibbs, Jr. was a soldier from Sudbury in King Philip's War in 25 November to 3 December 1675. [3] He was credited for service in King Philip's War on 24 April 1676. [3]

ii. Thomas Gibbs (twin) was born on 17 December 1656 in Sudbury. [5][7] He presumably died young.

iii. Thomas Gibbs was born on 10 April 1660 in Sudbury. [7]

iv. John Gibbs died on 2 April 1718 in Sudbury, Middlesex county. He married Ann Gleason.

v. Elizabeth Gibbs, the daughter of Matthew Gibbs, married John Russell of Duxbury. [5]

vii. Hannah Gibbs, the daughter of Matthew Gibbs, married Samuel Winch on 11 February 1674. [5]

viii. Mary Gibbs died on 6 January 1690/1. [8] She married first John Goodrich on 23 March 1674/5 in Sudbury. [8] John, the son of John Goodrich was born on 5 September 1647 and died about March 1676. [8] Mary married second Thomas Frost on 12 November 1678 in Sudbury. [8] Thomas was born about 1647 and died in 1724 in Framingham. [8]
