JOHN GIBBS (d. 1718), son of Matthew Gibbs and Mary Bradish
ANN GLEASON (say 1667–by 1694), daughter of Thomas Gleason and Sarah Unknown
John was the son of Matthew Gibbs and Mary Bradish. [1] He died on 2 April 1718 in Sudbury, Middlesex county. [2] He married Ann Gleason on 27 April 1688 in Sudbury. [2][3] He married second Sarah Cutler of Reading on 31 May 1694. [1] The widow Sarah died on 31 August 1725 in Sudbury. [2]
Ann, the daughter of Thomas Gleason, was probably born about 1668 in Sherborn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. [3] She died in 1692. [3]
Thomas Gleason left his "son-in-law John Gibbs, who married my daughter Ann Gleason," five shillings in his will of 13 April 1795. [3]
John Gibbs of Sudbury, while "in good health," made his will on 3 March 1717/8. He left his son Thomas five shillings beyond what he had already been given and his son John five shillings. He left his daughters Mary and Sarah each 25 pounds. He left his wife Sarah an annuity of five pounds during her widowhood and the use of his house in Sudbury. He left his sons Nathaniel, Isaac, Jacob and Israel the rest of his estate, they to keep two cows for their mother. He named his friend John Rice, Jr. of Sudbury his executor and signed his will with his mark. The inventory of the estate of Mr. John Gibbs, who had died on 2 April 1718, was taken on 18 April 1718 and amounted to £654-10-03. His widow Sarah and Nathaniel took oath to it on 21 April 1718 and it was proved on 3 July 1718. [4]
Children of John Gibbs and Ann Gleason:
i. Thomas Gibbs was born on 19 April 1689. [1] He died by 1773. He appears to have married first Hannah Unknown. Hannah, the wife of Thomas, died, apparently due to complications from childbirth, on 19 December 1717 in Brookfield, Worcester county. [5] He married second Sarah Wolcott on 13 April 1719 in Brookfield. [5]
Thomas and Sarah had a large family in Brookfield. [5]
Thomas Gibbs of Greenwich, Hampshire county made his will on 1 September 177[blotted]. It was probated in 1773. He mentioned his beloved wife Sarah and his children. [6]
Thomas settled at Brookfield and then moved to Quabbin. [1] The lost town of Greenwich was flooded in the 1930s to make the Quabbin Reservoir.
ii. John Gibbs died on 23 November 1732 in Framingham, Middlesex county. [1][7] He married Naomi Pike on 9 March 1909/10 in Framingham. [1][7] Naomi was probably the daughter of Jeremy and Rachel (Leppingwell), born on 14 February 1688/9 in Reading, Middlesex county. [8] She married second John Britton of Southborough, Worcester county on 25 October 1738 in Southborough. [1][9] John may be the John who died on 13 July 1760 in Southborough. [9]
iii. Mercy Gibbs was born on 3 August 1691 in Sudbury. She married James Aikens.
Children of John Gibbs and Sarah Cutler:
iv. Sarah Gibbs was born on 6 December 1701 in Sudbury. [2] She died on 2 February 1733/4. [1] She married Daniel, the son of Samuel Winch, on 4 March 1731. Daniel died by 4 September 1758, when his will was probated. [1] He married second Abigail Reed of Sudbury on 11 March 1742. [1]
v. Nathaniel Gibbs married Bathsheba Parmenter on 26 or 29 May 1726 in Sudbury. [1][2] Bathsheba is probably the daughter of Joseph and Mary Parmenter, born on 28 January 1704/5 in Sudbury. [2]. Bathsheba, the wife of Nathaniel, died on 24 October 1746 in Sudbury. [2]
Nathaniel was a soldier in Samuel Dakin's company in 1755, during the French and Indian War. [10, 338]
vi. Isaac Gibbs died at age 94. [1] He married Thankful Wheeler on 1 October 1725 in Sudbury. [1][2] Thankful, the daughter of Uriah and Abigail (Rice) Wheeler, was born on 7 August 1707 in Sudbury. [2]
Isaac was on the muster roll of Captain Wright's company on 17 June 1724, raised to fight the Indians. [10, 299]
vii. Jacob Gibbs was born on 25 June 1704 in Sudbury. [2] He is probably the Mr. Jacob who died of consumption on 17 or 18 October 1777, age about 73, in Sutton, Worcester county. [11] He married first Martha, the daughter of John and Elizabeth How. [1][7] She was born on 15 March 1704/5 in Framingham. [7] She is probably the Martha, wife of Jacob, who died on 27 April 1747 in Hopkinton. [12] He married second Mary Unknown. [1] She may be the widow Mary who died on 20 October 1786, age 77, in Sutton. [9]
viii. Israel Gibbs was born on 11 July 1706 in Sudbury. [2] He married Mary Hamilton of Hopkinton on 18 May 1727 in Hopkinton. [1][12]
ix. Ephraim Gibbs was born on 12 June 1710 in Sudbury. [2] He died on 15 August 1710 in Sudbury. [2]
