Daniel Goodwin (bef. c. 1640–1712/3)
Daniel Goodwin was born before about 1640. He died between 22 January 1711/2 and 20 May 1713. Goodwin and Libby say he married first Margaret Spencer, the daughter of Thomas and Patience (Chadbourne) Spencer. [1][2, 652] She was the granddaughter of William Chadbourne. [1] Goodwin and Libby say that he married second Sarah Saunders, the widow of Peter Turbet. [1][2, 606] Sarah was the daughter of Lieutenant John and Ann Sanders. [2, 606]
Fiske provides an English ancestry for Daniel. However, it is based on the assertion that Daniel is the son of Daniel and Dorothy (Barker) Goodwin and no evidence for this is presented. [3]
Libby says that in 1661, Daniel and Thomas Spencer were accused of trading with the Indians, but “no grounds appeared.” [2, 652]
Daniel Goodwin bought 30 acres of upland with swamp and marsh in Berwick, York County, Maine from James Grant by a deed dated 16 May 1662. [4, 4:55] Daniel was probably illiterate; his signed his deeds with his mark.
By a deed dated 18 December 1674, Moses Spencer of Kittery sold 25 acres by the Nequichawanick Little River to Daniel Goodwin, Sr. for 12 pounds. [4, 5:179] The Abenaki called the Salmon Falls River the Newichawannock.
By a deed dated 14 July 1683, Daniel Goodwin, planter of Berwick, for diverse good causes, especially the love he bore his sons Thomas and James Goodwin of Berwick, transferred the land he bought from James Grant to them. He excepted the marsh and swamp he had already fenced, and a half acre adjoining the York highway and retained the right to cut firewood. [4, 4:55]
Daniel was on the grand jury at a court of sessions of peace in York County on 1 November 1692. [4, 5:225] He was on a jury which served as the grand jury at the court of quarter sessions and the trial jury at the inferior court of common pleas at York on 7 April 1696. [4, 5: 261,263] He was on the trial jury at the inferior court of common pleas at York on 7 July 1696. By a deed of 21 August 1701, Daniel Goodwin, Sr. of Berwick sold six acres of marsh and swamp land in the marshes called Sluts Corner to his son Daniel for 20 pounds and 13 shillings. The land was bounded to the north by his own land; to the south by his son Thomas’s land; to the east by land belonging to the widow of his son James. [4, 6:283]
Daniel Goodwin, Sr. of Berwick and his son Thomas Goodwin of Berwick entered into an agreement on 13 December 1711. Daniel agreed to lease to Thomas his homestead, house, orchard, barn and outhouses that he bought from Mr. Eliakim Hutchinson, his swamp and meadow at Sluts Corner and 15 acres at the head of Cox’s Pond that the town had granted to him, a piece of land that he and Humphrey Spencer had an agreement about, 25 acres at Pipestave Hills, and his cattle during the rest of Daniel’s lifetime. In return, Thomas agreed to pay him half of the produce of the land, half of the calves born, and half of the cow’s milk and to provide him with firewood, washing, and water. Upon Daniel’s decease Thomas agreed to pay Daniel’s daughter Sarah Barns ten pounds and Daniel’s property would be transferred to Thomas. [4, 4:222–3]
On 21 January 1711/2 Humphrey Spencer of Berkwick sold Daniel Goodwin, Sr., yeoman of Berwick, an acre of land in Berwick for 30 shillings. [4, 8:60–61]
On 20 May 1713 Thomas Goodwin, husbandman of Berwick, sold to Daniel Goodwin, husbandman of Berwick, sundry small parcels of land at Sluts Corner for 40 shillings. The deed refers to Daniel’s father, Daniel Goodwin, Sr., deceased. Thomas’s wife Mehitable signed the deed, relinquishing her thirds of right. [4, 8:61–62]
