Robert Vose (c. 1599–1683)
Jane Moss (say 1609–1675)
The migrant ancestor Robert Vose was the son of Thomas and Margery Vose of Garston, Lancashire. [1] He was born about 1599. He died “sum time in October,” 1683, age 84, in Dorchester. [2] He married Jane Moss of Childwell in 1629 by a license issued 25 July 1629. [1]
Jane was born say 1609. Jane, the wife of Robert, died “sum time in October 1675.” [1]
Robert was living in Garston in 1626. He was living in Ditton, Prescot Parish, Lancashire on 18 February 1641 and in Cronton, also in Prescot, on 29 March 1650. [1]
Robert, “gentleman of Dorchester,” purchased 500 acres in the part of Dorchester that became Milton on 13 July 1654 for 380 pounds. [1]
Robert was received into full communion in the Milton church on 17 July 1681. He was admitted freeman on 30 May 1666. He was a selectman in 1669 and in 1677. [1]
By a deed written on 20 February 1662 and executed on 18 September 1683 Robert conveyed his farm and 140 acres plus six acres of salt march to his eldest living son Edward. [1]
Robert Vose, yeoman of Milton, signed his will with his mark on 10 September 1683. He mentioned his sons Edward and Thomas and his daughter Martha Buckminster. Inventory was taken by Ralph Houghton and Robert Babcock and attested to by Edward and Thomas Vose on 20 December 1683. [1]
Children of Robert Vose and Jane Moss:
i. William Vose died on 1 August 1669 in Milton. [1]
ii. Edward Vose (#54) was born about 1636. He died on 29 January 1716 in Milton. He married Abigail Sharp.
iii. Elizabeth Vose died on 15 January 1675 in Milton. She married Thomas Swift on 9 December 1657 in Dorchester. Thomas, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Capen) Swift, died on 31 January 1717/8. He married second Sarah Clapp on 16 October 1676 in Milton. She died on 4 February 1717/8. [1]
iv. Captain Thomas Vose was baptized on 18 February 1640/1 in Prescot. He died on 23 April 1708, age 67, in Milton. He married Waitstill Wyatt. Waitstill, the daughter of Edward Wyatt, was baptized on 2 March 1645 in Dorchester. She died on 8 January 1788, age 68. Edward and Waitstill are buried in the Milton Cemetery. [1]
Thomas was a selectman for Milton for 18 years, he was town clerk for 17 years and he was a representative to the general court for ten years. [1]
Thomas was a lieutenant in Captain Samuel Wadsworth’s company in King Philip’s War. He was a captain in the Canadian expedition. [1]
v. Martha Vose was born after 1641, when she was not mentioned in her grandfather’s will. She died after 21 October 1686, when she was appointed administratrix of her second husband’s estate. She married first Lieutenant John Sharp of Muddy River (now Brookline), the brother of her brother Edward’s wife Abigail. John was born on 12 March 1643. He was killed by Indians on 21 April 1676 in Sudbury. She married second Jabez Buckminster of Muddy River. Jabez, the son of Thomas and Joanna Buckminster died on 10 September 1686 in Muddy River. John was a lieutenant in Captain Samuel Wadsworth’s company in King Philip’s War. [1]
