Thomas Lord (c. 1585–aft. 1644)
Dorothy Bird (bp. 1588–1670/5)
The father of Thomas Lord, Richard Lord, yeoman, was buried on 16 October 1610. He married Joan Unknown. She was buried on 22 September 1610. [4]
In his will, written on 30 May 1610 and probated on 7 February 1611, Richard mentions his wife Joan and children Thomas, Elizabeth, Ellen and Alice. He left his wife the use of his goods, the use of the chamber over the kitchen and an annuity of five pounds from his lands in Towcester. [4]
The migrant ancestor Thomas Lord was the son of Richard Lord of Towcester, Northamptonshire. He was born about 1585 and died soon after 29 January 1643/4. He married Dorothy Bird on 23 February 1610/1 in Towcester. [1]
Thomas was issued a marriage license on 10 February 1610/1 in Peterborough, allowing him to marry Dorothy, the daughter of Robert Bird of Towcester. [2]
Dorothy Bird was the daughter of Robert Bird of Towcester. She was baptized on 25 May 1588 in Towcester. She died between 8 February 1670 and 12 May 1675. She married Thomas Lord. [1]
Thomas Lord, a 50-year-old smith, his wife Dorothy, age 46, Thomas Lord, age 16, Ann Lord, age 14, William Lord, age 12, John Lord, age 10, Robert Lord, age 9, Amy Lord, age six, and Dorothy Lord, age 4, enrolled in London in 1635 as passengers to New England on the Elizabeth & Ann. [1]
Dorothy’s father Robert was buried on 22 July 1622 in Towcester. He married Amy Unknown. Amy, an 'olde widdowe', was buried on 19 April 1625 in Towcester. [4]
Robert made his will on 18 July 1622 in Towcester. He left his daughter Lord, wife of Thomas Lord, 40 shillings. [4]
Thomas settled in Cambridge and removed to Hartford in 1636. [1]
Dorothy wrote her will on 8 February 1699/[70?] and it was proved on 14 May 1675. She mentions the children of her son Thomas, deceased; her daughter Amy Gilbert and her children; her son Robert, if he lived long enough after her decease to receive note of her will; her son William; her grandson Richard Lord; her grandchildren Hannah, Dorothy and Margery Ingersoll; her daughter Stanton; and the wife of Nicholas Clark. Inventory was taken on her estate on 12 May 1675 and it amounted to about 186 pounds. [1]
Children of Thomas Lord and Dorothy Bird, all baptized in Towcester: [1]
i. Richard Lord was baptized on 5 January 1611/2. He died on 10 May 1662 in Hartford. [3] He married Sarah Unknown. She died on 2 August 1676. [3]
Richard came to New England before his parents. [3][4]
Richard Lord successfully sued Thomas Allen for 40 shillings debt at the Connecticut General Court on 5 September 1639. [5, vol. 1, 17]
Richard Lord was on a jury on 2 July 1640. [5, vol. 1, 55]
In April 1642 the Connecticut General Court forbid trade with the Indians on Long Island, but Richard Lord and Thomas Stanton were permitted one trip. [5, vol. 1, 72]
On 5 March 1644/5 Richard appeared before the court for altering one of its orders. This was looked upon as a serious offense, but conceiving that it might have been “inconsiderate” and noting that Richard was much humbled, he was fined five marks. [5, vol. 1, 123] A mark was worth 13s. 4d.
On 28 January 1646/7 Richard was fined for disobeying the order not to sell lead outside of the township. [5, vol. 1, 123]
ii. Anna Lord was baptized on 18 September 1614. She died on 4 September 1688. She married Thomas Stanton.
iii. Thomas Lord was baptized on 15 November 1616. He died before 8 February 1670. He married Hannah Thurston on 23 September 1652 in Boston. [1]
In June 1652 Thomas Lord of Hartford was employed by the court to set bones. [5, vol. 1, 234]
iv. William Lord was baptized on 27 December 1618. He married an unknown first wife by 1643. He married second Lydia, the daughter of William Buckland and widow of John Brown, in or soon after 1664. [1]
v. Robert Lord was baptized on 12 May 1620. He married by 1651 Rebecca Unknown. [1]
vi. John Lord was baptized on 21 January 1623/4. He married first Rebecca, the daughter of Francis Bushnell, by 1646. He married second Adrean Bayse on 15 May 1648. He may have married third Elizabeth Vincent. [1]
John Lord of Hartford abandoned his wife and in September 1651 the court ordered him to provide her with a bed and clothes. [5, vol. 1, 224]
vii. Amy Lord was baptized on 30 November 1626. She married John Gilbert on 6 May 1647 in Hartford. [1]
viii. Dorothy Lord was baptized on 1 July 1629. She probably died before 8 February 1670. She married by about 1652 John Ingersoll. [1]
