William Billings (c. 1629–1713)

Mary Unknown (d. 1718)

Possible English Ancestry of William Billing

William was not from Taunton, Somerset, as early articles suggested. He might be the son of Richard Billing [various spellings] of Prescot, Lancanshire. This Richard was buried on 16 December 1640. He had a wife Elizabeth (buried 27 September 1633) and children Margaret (buried 3 May 1618), Roger (baptised 25 July 1620), Anna (baptised 2 April 1622), John (baptised 6 November 1631), William (baptised 23 April 1631) and Margaret (baptised 22 September 1633). Roger and Ann may be the other two Billings in early Dorchester. [1]

The migrant ancestor William Billings was born about 1629, based on the age on his gravestone. He died in 1713, before 29 April, when his will was proved. He married Mary Unknown on 12 January 1657/8 in Dorchester. She may be the widow Billings who was buried on 27 February 1717/8. William and Mary are buried in the North Stonington cemetery and William’s gravestone says, “1713 Here lies the body of William Billing who died in the 85th year of his age.” [1][2]

On 27 February 1717/8 Manasseh Minor wrote in his diary, "widow biling buried." [3, 40]

An estate called Deanes was inherited by William, who sold it to his brother Ebenezer. In his will of 23 January 1649, Ebenezer wrote: [2]

Whereas my brother William Billing by virtue of an obligation unto me made before his departure for New England whereby he relinquished … for certain considerations … the house and land called Deanes … formerly belonging to our late father William Billing deceased I do give … Deanes to my nephew and godson Ebenzezer Billing, son of my late brother Joseph, deceased.

William came to New England between 1649 and 1658, when he was in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He moved to Stonington by 1667 and acquired a large estate. [2] He was a soldier in King Philip’s War in 1675. [2] He was admitted to the first church in Stonington on 29 April 167. [4, 189, 194]

William made his will on 3 October 1712; it was proved on 14 April 1713. He mentioned his wife Mary, his sons William and Ebenezer, his daughters Margaret, Mary, Lydia, Mercy, Dorothy and Patience, his daughter Abigail’s daughters, his grandchildren Beriah Grant and Mary Keeays (the name is uncertain). [BFC] Mary made her nuncupative will in 1713 and it was recorded on 8 July 1718. She mentioned her daughters Margaret, Mary, Lydia, Mercy, Dorothy and Patience and her granddaughters Mary Ceay (again uncertain) and Elizabeth and Mary Randall. [2]
