EDWARD RIGGS (d. 1672)

ELIZABETH HOLMES (bp. 1594–1634)

Edward's origins are not conclusively known. He might be the unnamed son of Richard and Elizabeth (Chamberlain) Riggs who was baptized on 30 March 1589 in Roydon, county Essex or he might be one of two Edward Riggs baptized in Hawkshead, now Cumbria: Edward, son of Richard, baptized on 6 May 1593 or Edward, son of James, baptized on 25 July 1594. [1] He died or was buried on 5 March 1671/2 in Roxbury. [1] He married first Elizabeth Holmes on 16 September 1618 at All Saints Church in Nazeing (neighboring Roydon). [1] He married second Elizabeth Roosa on 5 April 1635 in Roxbury. [1] She died or was buried there on 2 September 1669. [1]

Elizabeth Holmes was "almost certainly" the brother of George Holmes, baptized on 21 July 1594 at All Saints, and "apparently" the daughter of George and Elizabeth Holmes. [1] She was baptized on 13 December 1590 at All Saints. [1] She is recorded as dying in October 1635 in Roxbury, but the record was not a contemporary one. She probably died in October 1634.

Elizabeth's presumed brother George died before 30 January 1651/2, when his will was proved, in Roxbury. [1]

The Riggs and Holmes families came to New England with Reverend John Eliot and settled in Roxbury. [1] Edward was admitted to the Roxbury chute in 1633. [1]

Edward made his will on 5 March 1671/2; it was proved on 6 March 1671/2; inventory was taken on 5 March 1671/2. [1] He mentioned his daughter-in-law, the wife of his son Edward and their four children; his daughter Mary Twitchell and her children, specifically naming Joseph and Hannah; his granddaughter Elizabeth Allen.
