RICHARD PETTINGILL (c. 1620–aft. 1695)

JOANNA INGERSOLL (bp. 1625–1697/8), daughter of Richard Ingersoll and Agnes Langlye


Richard was born about 1620. [1] He died shortly after 15 July 1695. [1] He married Joanna Ingersoll before 1644. [1][2]

Joanna, the daughter of Richard Ingersoll and Agnes Langlye, was baptized on 3 March 1624[/5?] in Sutton, Bedforshire. [2] She died about 1697/8. [1]

In his will off 21 July 1644, Richard Ingersoll of Salem referred to Richard as his son-in-law. [1]

Richard was a resident of Salem by 1640. [1] He was admitted a freeman on 2 June 1641. [1] He had a grant at Wenham in 1642. He bought land in Newbury on 8 April 1651. [1] He was dismissed from the church at Salem to the church in Newbury by a letter of 4 (6) [August] 1642. [1] He was on a grand jury in 1661. [1]

In the conflict in the Newbury church between Reverend Thomas Parker, and Mr. Edward Woodman, Richard supported Parker. [3, 116]

By separate deeds of 15 July 1695, Richard conveyed land in Newbury to his sons Samuel, Matthew, and Nathaniel. [1]

Children of Richard Pettingill and Joanna Ingersoll:

i. Samuel Pettingill was baptized on 9 February 1644/5 in Salem. [5] He died between 9 July 1709, when he made his will, and 2 January 1711, when it was proved. [1] He married Sarah, the daughter of John Poore, on 13 February 1673/4. [1] She was born on 5 June 1655. [1]

ii. Matthew Pettingill was probably born about 1648 in Wenham. He married Sarah Noyes.

iii. Mary Pettingill was born on 6 July 1652 in Newbury. [4] She died on 19 September 1705 in Newbury. [1] She married Sergeant Abraham Adams on 16 November 1670 in Newbury. [1][4]

iv. Nathaniel Pettingill was born on 21 September 1654 in Newbury. [4] He probably died shortly before 11 February 1717/8. He may have married first Mary ___. [1] He married Hannah Goodridge on 16 October 1703 in Newbury. [4] Hannah, the daughter of Jeremiah Goodridge and his wife Mary Adams, was born on 15 November 1681 and was living in 1736. [1]

Nathaniel was a farmer. [1] His will was proved on 11 February 1717/8. [1]

i. Unknown Pettingill was born on 15 November 1657 and died on 17 November 1657 in Newbury. [4]

ii. Henry Pettingill was born on 16 January 1659 in Newbury. [4] He died on 20 January 1659 in Newbury. [4]
