SAMUEL MAY (say 1633–1677), son of John May

ABIGAIL STANSFIELD (bp. 1638–aft. 1713)


Abigail Stansfield's English Ancestry

Gideon Stansfield was buried on 9 May 1658 in Heptonstall, Yorkshire. [3] He married Grace Eastwood. She was buried on 14 August 1682 in Heptonstall. [3]

Gideon and Grace had seven children baptized in Heptonstall, two sons and a daughter. [3] Two unnamed children died young. [3] His grandson John Draper deposed that he was a blacksmith with one son, who was unable to speak. [3] Two of his children were:

i. Miriam Stansfield was baptized on 27 November 1625. [3] She died in January 1687 in Roxbury. [6] She married James Draper on 21 April 1646 in Heptonstall. [6] James was born in 1618 in Heptonstall. [6] He died in July 1694 in Roxbury. [6]

James and Miriam went to New England shortly after they married. [6]

ii. Abigail Stansfield was baptized on 25 November 1638.

Samuel May was the son of John May. [1] He was born say 1633. He died on 17 July 1677 in Roxbury. [1][2] He married Abigail Stansfield on 7 January 1657 in Roxbury. [2]

Abigail Stansfield, the daughter of Gideon and Grace (Eastwood) Stansfield, was baptized on 25 November 1638 in Heptonstall, Yorkshire. [1] She died after 19 July 1713. [1] She married second Humphrey Johnson.

Abigail came to New England with her married sister Miriam Draper. [3]

Samuel May was an early proprietor of Woodstock, Connecticut. [3]

On 17 October 1683 the selectman of Roxbury petitioned the General Court for land to be laid out. This was granted on 7 November and possession of the area—which included what became Woodstock— was taken on 5 April 1686. Samuel May was granted lot 29 of the original 39 lots. [4]

There is no evidence Samuel ever lived in Woodstock. [5]

Children of Samuel May and Abigail Stansfield:

i. Abigail May was born on 22 May 1659 in Roxbury. She was baptized on 29 May 1659 in Roxbury. She died on 9 April 1745, age 85, in Pomfret, Windham County, Connecticut. She married Nathaniel Johnson.

ii. Jonathan May was born on 4 February 1663[/4?] in Roxbury. [2] He was baptized on 7 February 1663/4 in Roxbury. [2]

iii. Joanna May was born on 7 March 166[5?/6] in Roxbury. [2] She was baptized on 11 March 1665/6 in Roxbury. [2]

iv. Eleazar May was born on 6 March 166[7?/8] in Roxbury. [2] He was slain by Indians on 29 April 1689 in Roxbury. [2] He married Sarah ___. She died on 5 January 1688/9 in Roxbury. [2]

v. John May was born on 17 June 1670 in Roxbury. [2] He died on 3 December 1672 in Roxbury. [2]

vii. Gideon May was born on 25 January 1671[/2?] in Roxbury. [2] He was baptized on 4 February 1671/2 in Roxbury. [1] He died there on 27 February 1671/2. [1]

viii. Experience May was born on 28 August 1673 in Roxbury. [2] She was baptized there on 31 August 1673. [1]
