THOMAS LOTHROP (bp. 1613–1707), son of Reverend John Lothrop and Hannah House

SARAH LEARNED (bp. 1607), daughter of William Learned and Goodith Gilman


Thomas, the son of Reverend John and Hannah (House) Lothrop, was baptized on 21 February 1612/3 in Eastwell, Kent. [1] He died in 1707. [1][2, p. 38] He married as her second husband Sarah, the daughter of William Learned on 11 December 1639 in Boston. [1][2, p. 38][3]

Reverend John Lothrop recorded his son's marriage: [2, p. 38]

My sonn Thomas and brother Larnett's daughter, widow Ewer, were married in the Bay [Boston] Dee. 11, 1639.

Sarah Learned was baptized on 18 January 1606/7 in St. Olave, Bermondsey (formerly Southwark) as the daughter of "wm Larnet showmaker." [4] She married first as his second wife Thomas Ewer on 13 January 1623/4 in St. Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey, Surrey. [1] Thomas was baptized on 10 March 1592/3 in Strood, Kent. [1][3] He died between 5 June and August 1638. [1] He married first Bridget Hipsley on 13 September 1614 in Strood. [1][3]

Thomas Ewer, tailor, age 40, his wife Sarah, age 28, and their children Elizabeth, age four, and Thomas, age one and a half, sailed for New England on the James in June 1635. [3]

Sarah Ewer was admitted to the church in Charlestown on 12 December 1635. [3] Thomas Ewer was admitted to the church on 8 January 1635/6. [1] He was admitted a freeman on 3 March 1635/6. [3]

Sarah was granted administration on Thomas Ewer's estate on 3 March 1635/6. [3]

Thomas Lothrop was admitted to the church in Scituate on 4 May 1637. [3][2, p. 38]

Thomas moved to Barnstable with his father in 1639. [1][2, p. 38] He was a land surveyor in 1641 in Barnstable. [2, p. 38] He is on the 1648 list of those able to bear arms. [2, p. 38] He was made freeman on 8 June 1656. [2, p. 38]

In his will, his father refers to Thomas as his eldest son. [5][2, p. 38] He left him his house in Barnstable. [5]

Children of Thomas Lothrop and Sarah Learned:

i. Mary Lothrop was born on 4 October 1640 in Boston. She died after 1735. She married first John Stearns. She married second Lieutenant William French. She married third Isaac Mixer.

ii. Hannah Lothrop was born on 18 October 1642 in Barnstable.[2, p. 45, says baptized][6]

iii. Thomas Lothrop was born on 7 July 1642 in Barnstable. [2, p. 45, says baptized][6] He was living in 1697. [2, p. 45]

iv. Melatiah Lothrop was born on 2 November 1646 in Barnstable.[6] He died on 6 February 1712. [2, p. 45] He married Sarah Farrar of Lynnon 20 May 1667 in Barnstable. [2, p. 45][6] Sarah was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Hood) Farrar of Lynn. [2, p. 45] She died on 23 May 1712, age 64. [2, p. 45]

Melatiah signed his will on 29 October 1711; it was proved on 25 February 1711/2. [2, p. 45]

v. Bethiah Lothrop was born on 23 July 1649 in Barnstable. [6][2, p. 45] She died on 10 July 1694. [2, p. 45] She married John Hinckley in July 1668. [2, p. 45] John was probably the son of Samuel Hinkley. [2, p. 45] He died on 7 December 1709. [2, p. 45]

Children of Thomas Ewer and Sarah Learned: Baptisms recorded in Strood. [3]

i. John Ewer was baptized on 14 January 1627/8. He married Mary ___. [3]

John went to Barnstable. [3]

ii. Sarah Ewer was baptized on 10 May 1629. She married Thomas, the son of Thomas Blossom of Plymouth, on 18 June 1645. [3] He drowned on 22 April 1650. [3]

Reverend John Lothrop, recorded Sarah's marriage and Thomas's death: [7]

Thomas Blossome and Sarah Ewer marryed att my sonn Thomas his house by Mr Freeman, Nov. 28, 1644

Thomas Blossome and Samuel Hollet drowned at the Harbour of Nocett at their first Setting out from thence aboute a fishing voyage, Aprill 22, 1650.

iii. Elizabeth Ewer was baptized on 2 October 1631. She was buried on 9 April 1641 in Barnstable. [3]

iv. Thomas Ewer was baptized on 6 February 1633/4. [3]
