JOHN HILL (d. 1664)

John Hill died on 31 May 1664. [1]
Frances died between 13 February 1667/8 (when she was taxed) and 1680. [1]
John is first mentioned in the Dorchester records, when his property is referred to on 16 January 1633/4. [1]
John was granted land in Dorchester on 18 February 1636, 2 January 1637/8, and 18 March 1638. [1]
Frances joined the Dorchester church about 1638. [1]
There is no record of John ever being a church member, a freeman, or holding any office. [1]
In 1644 John lived in that part of Dorchester that became Milton. [1]
John made his will on 11 April 1660. He mentioned his eldest son John, his son Samuel, who had been helpful to him when he was infirm, and his friends Thomas Tileston and John Minot. Most of his estate was left to his wife Frances for life; after it was do be divided among his nine youngest children. His inventory, totaling £287-10-00, suggest he was a farmer. [1]

i. John Hill was born about 1630, probably in England. He married Hannah Unknown.
ii. Frances Hill was born about 1632, possibly in Dorchester. [1] She died on 18 November 1676 in Dorchester. [1] She married as his second wife Jonas Austin, Sr. of Taunton on 14 December 1667. [1] He died on 30 July 1683 in Taunton. [1] Jonas and Frances had no children. [1]
iii. Rebecca Hill was born about 1634 in Dorchester. [1] She died on 13 May 1676. [1] She married Joseph Gray of Taunton on 25 February 1667/8. [1]
iv. Mary Hill was born about 1636. [1] She died on 15 August 1726. [1] She married Thomas Breck on 12 February 11656/7. [1] He died on 23 April 1703. [1]
v. Samuel Hill was born about 1638. [1] He died on 12 January 1708/9. [1] He married Martha ___ c. 1667. [1] She died on 13 September 1715 in Dorchester. [1]
Samuel was an apparently unsuccessful husbandman of Dorchester; he received assistance from the town on several occasions. [1]
vi. Jonathan Hill was baptized on 12 July 1640 in Dorchester. [1] He died after 2 February 1708/9. [1] He married Mary ___. [1] She died after 9 December 1718. [1]
Jonathan was a tailor of Bridgewater. [1]
vii. Hannah Hill was baptized in December 1641 in Dorchester. [1] She married Daniel Fisher of Taunton about 1662. [1]
viii. Mercy Hill was baptized on 8 January 1642/3 in Dorchester. [1] She died on 7 July 1709. [1] She married Elkanah Willis of Bridgewater. [1] He died on 12 December 1711. [1]
ix. Ruth Hill was born in August 1644 in Dorchester. She died on 1 September 1736 in Sudbury. She married Roger Willis.
x. Ebenezer Hill died in the spring of 1696. [1] He married first Ruth, the daughter of Guido and Elizabeth Bailey of Bridgewater, about 1683. [1] He married second Sarah ___.
Ebenezer was a soldier in King Philip's War and served in Captain Johnson's company in the Great Swamp Fight. [1] He was a husbandman of Bridgewater. [1]
xi. Israel Hill died before 31 July 1667, probably unmarried, when his brother Ebenezer was granted administration on his estate. [1]
Israel was a carpenter in Dorchester. [1] He was a soldier in King Philip's War and was killed by the Indians. [1]
xii. Martha Hill was baptized on 20 August 1648 in Dorchester. There is no further record of her. [1]
xiii. Mehitable Hill was baptized on 18 February 1650/1 in Dorchester. [1] She died on 5 March 1679 in Dorchester. [2] Mehitable was unmarried. [1]
Mehitable apparently went to live with her sister Ruth's family in Sudbury and then returned with them to Dorchester when King Philip's War broke out. [2]
