GEORGE GRIGGS (c. 1593–1660)
ALICE UNKNOWN (c. 1603–1662/3)
George Griggs was born about 1593. [1] He died on 23 June 1660 in Boston. [1] He married Alice Unknown in England. [1]
Alice Unknown was probably born about 1603. [1] She died between 20 July 1662 and 1 May 1663.
George Griggs, carpenter of Landon, Buckinghamshire, age 42, arrived in Boston in June 1635 on the Hopewell with his wife Alice, 32, and his children Thomas, 15, William, 14, Elizabeth, ten, Mary, six, and James, two. [1] They settled in Muddy River (Brookline), now in Boston. [1] In 1638 he owned 28 acres there. [1]
George Griggs made his will on 4 July 1655; it was proved on 3 August 1660. He mentioned his wife Alice, his son James, and his daughters Anna Jones, Mary Brooks, and Sarah King. He left his house and ground to his son James Griggs. [1][2]
Alice Griggs of Boston made her will on 20 July 1662. If her son James Griggs did not return, she left her estate to her grandchild William King and her daughters Sarah Burgess and Ann Jones. Administration was granted to Robert Lattimore, in right of his wife Anne, and Roger Burgess, in right of his wife Sarah, on 1 May 1663. Inventory was taken on 26 July 1663. [2]
George and Alice's heirs believed that James—gone for many years—was probably dead. On 5 September 1665 the magistrates in Boston granted administration of his estate to Robert Lattimore, in right of his wife Anne and her children by her former husband, and Roger Burgess, in right of his late wife, her child with William King, and the children they had together. On 6 September 1666 Robert and Roger agreed on a division of the estate. [2]
Children of George Griggs and Alice Unknown:
i. Thomas Griggs was born in 1619/20. He died unmarried before 4 July 1655.
ii. William Griggs was born in 1620/1. He was buried in December 1638 in Boston. [3]
iii. Elizabeth Griggs was born in 1624/5. She died young.
iv. Mary Griggs was born in 1628/9. She died between 4 July 1655 and 20 July 1662. She married ___ Brooks.
v. James Griggs was born in 1632/3. He was apparently alive on 4 July 1655 but had been gone for many years in July 1662. He may have died at sea.
vi. Anne Griggs was probably born about 1635, possibly at sea. She married first Rice Jones in 1649/50. [1] Rice died on 3 January 1661/2 in Boston. [1] She married second Robert Lattimer in 1662. [1]
Robert and Anne moved to Southampton, Long Island in 1674. [1]
vii. Elizabeth Griggs was born on 14 May 1636 in Boston. [3] She died there in May 1640, age four. [3]
i. Sarah Griggs was born on 15 May 1637 in Boston. She married first William King. She married second Roger Burgess.
