Edmond Lewis (c. 1600–1651)

Edmond Lewis was born about 1600. He died between 13 January and 25 February 1650/1.

Mary Unknown was born about 1601. Mary, the widow of Edmond, died on 7: 7m: [September] 1658 in Lynn. [1]

Edmond Lewis, age 33, and Mary his wife, age 32, along with their children John, age three, and Thomas, age nine months, were on a list of passengers bound for New England in the Elizabeth on 30 April 1634. [2]

Edmond settled first in Watertown. [3]

Edmond shared in the first division of lands, receiving the 30-acre lot 26 on 25 July 1636, the five acre lot 82 on 28 February 1637, the five acre lot 61 on 16 June 1637, and another six acres on 9 April 1638. [4]

Edmond lived on the east side of Lexington Street and had 100 acres of upland and many small parcels. [4]

Edmond was a freeman on 25 May 1636. He was a selectman in December 1637. He was on a committee to lay out farms in October 1638. He was on the Essex county grand jury in December 1648. He was on the trial jury in December 1650. [3]

Edmond moved to Lynn in 1648. [3] He was constable in January 1649. [3]

Edmond wrote his will on 13 January 1650/1; it was proved on 25 February 16501. His inventory was taken on 12 February 1650/1. It amounted to £122-07-06 without real estate and with debts of £7-06-01. He named his wife, his eldest son John (who was to have a double portion), and his other five children (who were to have equal shares). He named his son Thomas. [3]

Children of Edmond and Mary Lewis:

i. John Lewis was born about 1630 in England. He married first Hannah Marshall on 17 June 1659 in Lynn. [3] He married second Elizabeth (Walker) King after 2 September 1699 (intention) in Lynn. [3] She was the daughter of Richard Walker and widow of Ralph King. [3] He married third Sarah (Merriam) Jenks on 10 February 1706/7 in Lynn. [3] She was the daughter of William Merriam and the widow of John Jenks. [3]

ii. Thomas Lewis was born in 1633 in England. He died on 26 April 1709 in Bristol, Rhode Island. He married Hannah Baker.

iii. James Lewis was born on 15 (11) 1635 [January 1635/6] in Watertown. [5] There is no further record of him. [3]

iv. Nathaniel Lewis was born on 25 (6) [August] 1639 in Watertown. [6] He married Mary ___. [3]

v. Unnamed Lewis died on 6 (9) [November] 1642, age ten days, in Watertown. [5]

vi. Joseph Lewis was born say 1646. [3] He married Mary Jones on 13 June 1671 in Swansea. [3] She was the daughter of Robert and Ann (Bibble) Jones. [3]

vii. Benjamin Lewis

Cutters says that Benjamin was "probably" the son of Edmond and Mary, but Anderson does not include him. [3][4]
