Captain William Lewis, the son of William and Felix Lewis, was born say 1620. [1] He died between 16 July 1689 and 28 August 1690. He married first Mary, the daughter of William Hopkins, by 1645. [1] He married second Mary, the daughter of Ezekiel Cheever on 22 November 1671 in Boston. [1][2]

Mary, the daughter of William and Mary Hopkins, was born say 1621. She died by 22 November 1671.

Mary was admitted to the church in Farmington on 15 March 1656. [3]

William, the son of William Lewis, was baptized on 15 March 1656 in Farmington and admitted to the church on 25 January 1657. [4]

William's father William Lewis left bequests to his grandchildren Ezekiel, Nathaniel, Abigail, Philip, and Ebenezer Lewis is his will of 30 August 1683. [1]

Captain William Lewis made his will on 16 July 1689. Inventory was taken on 28 August 1690 and it amounted to £1025-19-00. His heirs were his widow, his sons Philip, Samuel, William, Ebenezer, John, James, Ezekiel, and Nathaniel Lewis, and his duaghters Mary Judd, Sarah Boltwood, Hannah Marsh, Felix Selden, and Abigail Lewis. Inventory was exhibted by his widow and John Lewis on 4 September 1690. on 5 November 1690 administration was granted to Philip and William Lewis; the widow having an interst in the estate by jointure. On 6 March 1690/1 it was agreed that Philip—the eldest son—would get a double portion, all the other children would get a single portion, and Mrs. Lewis would get her jointure in "Land and Negroes." On 1 October 1691 there was a distribution to Philip, Ezekiel, Nathaniel, Samuel, Ebenezer, John, James, Mary, Sarah, Hannah, Felix, and Abigail. On 1 June 1707 there was a distribution to Samuel, William, John (deceased), James (deceased), Mary Judd [who was also deceased], Hannah Marsh, and Felix Seldon. [5]

In a probate paper of 7 April 1691, William's widow refers to herself as Mary, the daughter of Ezekiel Cheever. She suggests that the three youngest children [presumably Ezekiel, Nathaniel, and Abigail as they are not mentioned in John Lewis's will] are hers. [5]

Children of Captain William Lewis and Mary Hopkins:

i. Mary Lewis was born on 6 May 1645. She probably died between 1 October 1691 and 13 April 1692. She married Benjamin Judd.

ii. Philip Lewis was baptized on 13 December 1646. [6] He married Sarah Ashley about 1670. [7] Sarah was born about 1648. [7]

iii. Samuel Lewis was born on 18 August 1648. [6]

iv. Sarah Lewis was born about 1652. She died on 10 August 1722, age 70 years. She married Sergeant Samuel Boltwood. [6] Samuel, the son of Sergeant Robert Boltwood was killed in the 29 February 1704 French and Indian attack on Deerfield. [6]

Sarah is buried in the Old Hadley Cemetery in Hadley. Her gravestone says: [GRV]

Sarah ye wife of Saml Boltwood dyed on August ye 10th 1722 aged 70 year.

v. Hannah Lewis married first Samuel, the son of John Crow. [6] He was killed at the Falls Fight on 18 May 1676. [6] She married second Daniel Marsh. [6]

vi. William Lewis was baptized on 15 March 1656. [6] He died in 1737. [6] He married Phebe More. [6]

vii. Felix Lewis was baptized on 12 December 1658 in Farmington. [4] She married Thomas Selden. [6]

viii. Ebenezer Lewis married Elizabeth Merriman. [7] She was born in 1669. [7] She married second William Frederick on 2 December 1688. [7]

ix. John Lewis was born on 15 May 1655 in Farmington. [2] He died before 20 October 1694.

Inventory on John's estate, taken on 20 October 1694, amounted to £157-06-02. His heirs were Philip, Samuel, William, Ebenezer, James, Hannah Marsh, Sarah Boltwod and Felix Selden. On 3 May 1714 Benjamin and Jonathan contested this. The court rejected their claim and Jonathan appealed. [5]

x. James Lewis was born aabout 10 July 1667 in Farmington. [2] He probably died after 20 October 1694. [5]

James was "a trader, ran away to Jamaica." [6, 89]

Children of Captain William Lewis and Mary Cheever

x. Elizabeth Lewis was born on 20 October 1672. [6] She probably died young.

xi. Ezekiel Lewis was born on 7 November 1674 in Farmington. [2] He died on 14 August 1755 in Boston. [6] He married first Mary Breaden on 18 March 1702. [6] He married second Abigail Kilcup on 11 October 1704. [6]

Ezekiel graduated from Harvard College in 1695 and was a merchange in Boston. [6]

xii. Nathaniel Lewis was born on 1 October 1676. [6] He died on 24 February 1752. [6] He married first Abigail Ashley on 25 November 1699 in Farmington. [6][2] He married second Thankful Lyman on 4 July 1726. [6]

xiii. Abigail Lewis was born on 19 Septmber 1678 in Farmington. [2] She married William Wadsworth on 10 December 1696 in Farmington. [2]

xiv. Joseph Lewis was born on 15 March 1679. [6]

xv. Daniel Lewis was born on 15 March 1679. [6] He died on 16 July 1681 in Farmington. [6][2]
