Josiah Cook (1707–1775), son of Joshua Cook and Patience Doane

Hannah Sparrow (b. 1711), daughter of Richard Sparrow and Mercy Cobb


Josiah Cook, the son of Joshua Cook and Patience Doane, was born on 30 August 1707 in Eastham, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.1 He died in 1775 in Chatham, now East Hampton, then in Hartford, County Connecticut.2 He married Hannah Sparrow on 11 February 1730 in Eastham.1

Hannah, the daughter of Richard Sparrow and Mercy Cobb, was born on 12 October 1711 in Eastham.2

On 22 May 1728 Micajah Snow, yeoman of Eastham, was appointed guardian of Hannah.3

On 14 June 1740 Josiah Cook and Hannah his wife, sold their share of land they inherited from Richard Sparrow to Hannah's brother Richard.3

Josiah and Hannah were admitted to the Haddam Neck Congregational Church on 4 October 1741 and four of their children were baptized there on the same day.4

Josiah and Zaccheus Cook bought land together several times in the part of Middletown that became Chatham in 1742.2

Children of Josiah Cook and Hannah Sparrow: The first five recorded in Eastham as the childen of Josiah and Hannah.1

i. Elijah Cook was born on 26 January 1731/2 in Eastham. He apparently died young.

ii. Elizabeth Cook was born on 24 February 1733/4 in Easthan. She was baptized on 4 October 1741 in the Haddam Neck Congregational Church. She died on 4 July 1797. She married Ebenezer Sears.

iii. Josiah Cook was born on 3 December 1735 in Eastham. He was baptized on 4 October 1741 in the Haddam Neck Congregational Church.4 He died in 1813 in Chatham.2 Josiah Cook, Jr. married Mary Ridder on 2 or 3 March 1767 in the Haddam Neck Congregational Church.2,4,5

Josiah was a soldier in the French and Indian War from 1 September to 6 December 1755.2 He and Mary joined the Haddam Neck Congregational Church on 26 July 1772.2,4 They had a daughter baptized there on 3 August 1772.4

iv. Captain Elijah Cook was born on 8 June 1737 in Eastham. He was baptized on 4 October 1741 in the Haddam Neck Congregational Church.4 He died after 1796, perhaps in Canajoharie, Montgomery County, New York.2 He married Hannah, the daughter of John Hale, on 27 February 1760 in Middletown.2,5

Elijah Cook, referred to as Lieutenant Elijah after 1773 and Captain after 1880, held many offices in the East Hampton Congregational Church.4

v. Joshua Cook was born on 12 April 1740 in Eastham. He was baptized on 4 October 1741 in the Haddam Neck Congregational Church.4 He died on 21 March 1790 in the villaage of Middle Haddam in Chatham.2 He married first Marita (or Mary) Unknown.2 She died on 11 June 1783.2 He married second Elizabeth Cary of Middle Haddam on 4 December 1783 in the Haddam Neck Congregational Church.4 She probably died on 31 August 1796.2

Joshua was a soldier in the French and Indian War from 26 April to 6 November 1758 and from 15 April to 16 December 1759.2 Joshua and his wife Mary were amitted to full communion in the Congregational Church in East Hampton on 28 August 1768. Joshua and Marita were members of the Haddam Neck Congregational Church on 2 June 1776.4

vi. Captain Moses Cook was born on 23 October 1742 in Middletown.5 He was baptized on 26 September 1742 in the Haddam Neck Congregational Church.4 Deacon Moses Cook died on 5 May 1818, age 75, in East Hampton.4,6 He married first Elizabeth Cone on 18 December 1765 in the East Hampton Congregational Church.4 Elizabeth, the daughter of Joseph and Susanna Cone was born on 24 September 1744 in Haddam and died on 8 October 1808, age 64.6,7 Moses married second the widow Ede [Clark] Norton of East Hampton on 11 April 1809 in the East Hampton Congregational Church.4

Moses and Elizabeth are buried in the Lakeview Cemetery in East Hampton.7

Moses and his brother Richard owned a grist mill in East Hampton.2

Moses held many church offices in the East Hampton Congregational Church. He was chosen deacon on 16 May 1805 and served until 1818. He is referred to as Captain Moses in 1788.4

vii. Mercy Cook was born on 15 February 1745 in Middletown.5 She was baptized on 24 March 1745 in the Haddam Neck Congregational Church.4 The widow Mercy Carrier died on 5 August 1819, age 74, in East Hampton. She married Titus Carrier on 19 December 1765 in the the East Hampton Congregational Church.4 Titus, the son of John and Mary (Brown) Carrier, was born on 23 August 1733.2 Lieutenant Titus Carrier died on 26 July 1796, age 63, in East Hampton.4

Mercy was admitted to full communion in the East Hampton Congregational Church on 23 April 1769. Titus held many offices in the church.4

viii. Hannah Cook was baptized on 22 March 1748 in the Haddam Neck Congregational Church.4 She married Isaac Kneeland on 23 May 1764 in the East Hampton Congregational Church.4

Isaac and his wife Mary were recommended from the church in Marlborough to the East Hampton Congregational Church on 29 September 1771.4

ix. Rhoda Cook was baptized on 15 April 1750 in the Haddam Neck Congregational Church.4 She married Simeon Wright on 22 November 1769 in the East Hampton Congretational Church.4

Simeon and Rhoda were admitted to full communion in the East Hampton Congregational Church on 4 August 1771.4

x. Richard Cook was born on 17 March 1753 in Middletown.5 He married first Mary Rowley on 11 August 1779 in the East Hampton Congregational Church.4 Mary Cook of Chatham, consort of Richard Cook, died on 12 April 1808, age 49.5 She is buried in the Lakeview Cemetery in East Hampton.7 Richard married second Susanna Brown of East Hampton on 30 May 1809 in the East Hampton Congregational Church.4

Richard held many offices in the East Hampton Congregational Church.4
