Joseph Clark (1692–1770), son of Major John Clark and Rebecca Beamon

Lydia Grinnell (say 1693–by 1726), daughter Daniel Grinell and Lydia Pabodie


Joseph, the son of John and Rebecca Clark, was born on 23 January 1691/2 in Saybrook.1 He died on 10 September 1770, age 77.2 He married first Lydia Grinnell on 25 September 1712 in Saybrook.1 He married second Priscilla Shipman. She was born about 1696. She died on 24 December 1791, age 95.2 Joseph and Priscilla are buried in the Hearse Hill Cemetery in (now) Chester., Middlesex County, Connecticut.2

Lydia Grinnell, the daughter of Daniel and Lydia (Pabodie) Grinnell was born say 1693 in Little Compton, Bristol County, Province of Massachusetts Bay.3 She died by November 1726.

Chester was part of Saybrook until 1836. Bristol County was part of Massachusetts until 1747.

Daniel Grinnell refered to the children of his deceased daughter Lydia Clark in his November 1726 will.3

Joseph and Lydia lived in Chester.3

i. Joseph Clark was born on 25 January 1713/4.

ii. Rebecca Clark was born on 5 June 1716.

iii. Lydia Clark was born on 4 May 1718.

iv. Daniel Clark was born about 1720. He died on 13 July 1787, age 67 or 68, in Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut. He married first Deborah Lewis. He married second Martha (Benjamin) Ray.

Children of Joseph Clark and Priscilla Shipman:2

v. Captain Zachariah Clark was born about 1735. He died on 9 April 1814, age 79.2 He married first Anne Bushnel on 2 July 1789.2,4 Anne, the daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Shipman) Bushnell, was born on 5 October 1758 and baptized on 19 November 1758.4 She died on 26 April 1806, age 48.2 Zachariah and Anne are buried in the Old Cemetery in Chester.2 Zachariah married second the widow Sarah Scovill.4

Zachariah was a soldier in the French and Indian War and was a member of the relief expedition for Fort William Henry.4

vi. Jared Clark was born about 1744. He died on 5 June 1803, age 59.2 He married Mehetabel Dimock.2 She died on 10 February 1826.2 Jared and Mehetable are buried in the Hearse Hill Cemetery.2

Jared was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.2

Jared Clark of Saybrook apparently died intestate. Bond was posted on his estate on 5 July 1803. His inventory was presented to the probate court on 4 February 1804. His estate amounted to $4,554.30, with debts of $812.92. His heirs were his widow Mehetable, Grinnell, Jared, Zachariah, Asahel, and John Clark, Rebecca Stillman, Lydia Warner, and Mehetable Warner.5
