ALLEN PERLEY (c. 1608–1675)

SUSANNA BOKESEN (say 1613–1691)


Allen Perley was born about 1608. He died on 28 December 1675 in Ipswich. [1] Allen, a native of Wales, married Susanna Bokeson in 1636. in Boxford. [2]

Susanna Bokeson was born say 1613. The widow Susanna Perley died on 11 February 1691 in Ipswich. [1]

Allen Perley, a 27-year-old husbandman, was on a 2 April 1635 list of passengers to be transported to New England on the Planter. The passengers had brought certificates from the minister of St. Albans in Hertfordshire. [3] Allen settled in Ipswich. [4]

Allen was one of the inhabitants of Ipswich who signed a petition on 21 June 1637 asking that Ipswich be allowed to retain John Winthrop, Jr. as their leader. [5]

Allen was on an 18 May 1642 list of freemen. [6]

On 3 September 1652 Allen Perley, husbandman of Ipswich, sold his house and land to Walter Roper of Topsfield. [7]

On 30 September 1656 Allen was released from ordinary training, paying ten shillings a year. This was abated to six shillings on 27 September 1664. [4]

Allen was on the grand jury on 25 September 1660 and 27 September 1664. [4]

Allen Perley of Ipswich wrote his will on 23 June 1670 and added a clarifying codicil on 16 November 1671. It was proved on 3 February 1675/[6?] He mentioned—with some apparent resentment—his three elder sons John, Thomas and Samuel, saying, "Taking there liberty at the age of one & twenty to leave me &c. yet I have given untio them, three parts of the Land beyond Bachelours brooke." He also mentions his deceased son Nathaniel and left bequests to his two daughters Sarah and Martha, his son Timothy, not yet 23, and his beloved wife Susanna. He named his wife his sole executrix." [8] Inventory, taken on 19 January 1675/6 totaled £320–02–06. [4]

Children of Allen Perley and Susanna Bokesen:

i. John Perley was born about 1636. [4] He died on 15 December 1729 in Boxford. [4] He married Mary Howlett.

ii. Thomas Perley was born about 1641 in Ipswich. [9] He died on 24 September 1709, age 68, in Boxford. [9] He probably married Lydia Howlett, the daughter of Francis Peabody, as her second husband on 8 July 1668. [4]

Thomas was 21 in 1662. [10]

iv. Samuel Perley was born say 1639. He died on 29 January 1724/5 in Ipswich. He married Ruth Trumble.

v. Nathaniel Perley was born about 1644. He died on 29 April 1668.

Nathaniel was 22 in 1666. [10]

Inventory on Nathaniel's estate was taken on 26 May 1668.

vi. Sarah Perley was born say 1648. [4] She married William Watson on 15 January 1670/1 in Ipswich. [4]

vi. Timothy Perley was born about 1655. [4] He died on 25 January 1718/9 in Ipswich. [4] He married Deborah Unknown. [4]

viii. Martha Perley was born on 20 April 1657 in Ipswich. [1] She married Benjamin, the son of Robert Coker, on 31 May 1678 in Newbury. [4]
