CAPTAIN THOMAS PAINE (c. 1656–1721), son of Thomas Paine and Mary Snow

HANNAH SHAW (c. 1661–1713), daughter of Jonathan Shaw and Phebe Watson

Thomas, the son of Thomas and Mary (Snow) Paine, was born about 1656, probably in Eastham. [1][2] Captain Thomas Paine died on 23 June 1721 in Truro, Barnstable, Massachusetts. [1] He married first Hannah Shaw. [1] Captain Thomas Paine married second Elizabeth Ayers on 8 March 1714/5 in Boston. [1]

Hannah, the daughter of Jonathan Shaw of Plymouth, was born about 1661, probably in Lakenham (North Carver). [1][2] She died on 24 July 1713 in Truro. [1]

Thomas and Hannah are buried in the Old North Cemetery in Truro. The inscription on Thomas's gravestone says, "Here lyes ye body of Thomas Paine Esq. of Truroe died June 23d 1721 in ye 65 year of his age." The inscription on Hannah's says, "Here lies ye body of Mrs. Hannah wife to Captn Thomas Paine died July ye 24th 1713 in ye 52 year of her age." [2]

Thomas was the clerk to the proprietors of Pamet (later Truro). [2]

On 20 February 1709/10 Thomas was one of three chosen to invite John Avery to be the minister at Truro. [2]

On 19 March 1710/11 Captain Thomas Paine was voted town treasurer. [2] Beginning in 1711 he was town clerk for several years. [2]

On 19 December 1711 Thomas agreed to build and operate a grist windmill. He had previously built windmills in Yarmouth and Eastham. [2]

On 1712 he was on a committee to determine the bounds of Eastham and Truro. [2]

Thomas was several times a representative to the general court. In 1719 he was the moderator of the town meeting. For many years he was judge of the court of common pleas of Barnstable County. [2]

Thomas wrote his will on 6 April 1720 and it was proved on 4 July 1721. He left his wife Elizabeth the use and improvement of the new part of his dwelling house and half his farm during her widowhood, and one-third of his personal estate. He left his son Thomas Paine the lot of land he lived on, an additional lot, a windmill, and "Two Negroes Hector and Moll." As Hector and Moll were more likely to be a "charge" than a "profit," he added a blue suit and a pistol rapier. He left his son Elkanah his upland near Eastharbor. He left his son Moses two lots. He left meadow marsh or sedge ground at Eastharbor to both Elkanah and Moses. He left his sons Joshua and Barnabas land and smithing tools. He left Barnabas 24 pounds when he came of age. He left his daughter Phebe 40 pounds. He left two lots of land to be held equally by his four daughters, Hannah Binney, Abigail White, Phebe Paine, and Lydia Hinckley. He named his sons Thomas and Jonathan his executors. Inventory was taken on 14 July 1721 and it amounted to £4,722 - 12 - 09. Thomas was a wealthy man. [2]
