THOMAS HYLAND (bp. 1604–1683)

Thomas Hyland was baptized on 23 April 1604 in Waldron, co. Sussex. [1] He died between 14 February and 3 May 1683. He married Deborah Maynard on 5 November 1628 in Mayfield, co. Sussex. [2]

Deborah Maynard was baptized on 11 September 1603 in Mayfield. [2] She came from a substantial yeoman family. [2]

English Ancestry of Thomas Hyland [1]

Thomas Hyland, the father of the immigrant is probably the Thomas, son of Peter of Waldron and grandson of Richard of Waldron, who was baptized in Waldron on 29 June 1581. He was buried on 10 February 1629/30 in Waldron. He married Agnes Woodman, probably the daughter of John of Mayfield, on 17 May 1597.

i. Mary Hyland was baptized on 11 June 1598. She probably died young.

ii. John Hyland was living on 1629/30.

iii. Thomas Hyland was baptized on 23 April 1604.

iv. Samuel Hyland was baptized on 8 November 1606. He was living on 1629/30.

v. Peter Hyland was baptized on 1 March 1607/8. He probably died before 1626/7.

vi. Nicholas Hyland was baptized on 3 July 1609. He married Sarah Hunt on 1 October 1632 in Iden, Sussex.

vii. William Hyland was baptized on 26 July 1612 He was living on 1629/30.

viii. Josias Hyland was baptized on 20 September 1617. He was living on 1629/30.

ix. Elizabeth Hyland was born after 1609. He was living on 1629/30.

x. Mary Hyland was born after 1609. He was living on 1629/30.

xi. Ann Hyland was buried on 2 February 1629/30 in Waldron.

On 22 June 1650 Mary Lapham, widow, acknowledged that her husband Thomas Lapham, had sold a little house and half an acre of land in Tenterden in Old England near a place called Bures Ile to Thomas Hiland for 12 pounds. [3]

Thomas refers to land in Waldron, Sussex (near Mayfield) and Tenterden, Kent in his will. [2]

Thomas built a house in Scituate in 1637. [4, 18]

He was one of the Conihassett Partners of Scituate. 

Thomas Hyland was chosen a juror for the grand inquest jury on 2 June 1646 and he was fined for absence on 27 October 1646. [5, 2: 102, 110]

Thomas was chosen a constable for Scituate on 7 June 1648. [5, 2: 124]

On 7 June 1653 Thomas Hyland, Sr. and Thomas Hyland, Jr. commenced a suit against Mr. Charles Chauncey and others. They later met with them and publicly acknowledged that they were at fault. The court recorded this on 7 March 1653/4. [5, 3: 46]

Thomas Hiland was appointed to a committee to divide lands that John Williams, Sr. and his son Ensign John Williams held in common on 3 March 1662/3. [5, 4: 30]

Thomas Hyland, Sr. of Scituate gave a gift deed to his daughter Ruth Hyland of 60 acres of upland and 4-3/4 acres of meadow on 10 January 1664. [4, 254–5]

Thomas and his son Thomas are on a 1673 list of "allowed and approved" inhabitants of Scituate. [6, 155–6]

Esther Woodford of Scituate made her will on 27 May 1672. She left bequests to many apparent friends, including the wife of Thomas Hyland. [7]

i. John Maynard was buried on 3 April 1570.

ii. William Maynard was baptized on 11 April 1574. He married Elizabeth Avery.

iii. Martha Maynard was baptized on 9 June 1577.

iv. John Maynard was baptized on 8 April 1580.

v. Joan Maynard was baptized on 18 November 1582.

vi. Richard Maynard was baptized on 24 February 1584/5. He was buried on 3 July 1599.

vii. Elizabeth Maynard was buried on 24 November 1590.

viii. Alice Maynard was baptized on 22 October 1589.

William Maynard was baptized on 11 April 1574 in Mayfield. He was buried there on 7 February 1611/2. He married Elizabeth Avery. Elizabeth is probably the widow Elizabeth Maynard who was buried on 14 April 1636 in Mayfield.

William wrote his will on 20 January 1611/2. It was proved on 22 April 1612.

i. Reverend John Maynard was baptized on 8 March 1600/1.

ii. Deborah Maynard was baptized on 11 September 1603.

iii. Martha Maynard was baptized on 30 March 1606. She was buried on 8 February 1606/7 in Mayfield.

iv. Agnes Maynard was baptized on 9 April 1609.

v. Richard Maynard was born on 18 December 1609 in Mayfield. He was baptized on 1 January 1609/10.

Thomas Hyland of Scituate wrote his will on 14 February 1683 and inventory was taken on 3 May 1683. [8] He mentions his son Thomas and his grandson Thomas; his daughters Elizabeth James, Sarah Turner, Mary Bryant and Deborah Tichnor; his grandson Philip James; Isabel Wetherell, sometime wife of his son Samuel and now wife of Samuel Wetherell; his grandson Benjamin Bryant, son of his daughter Mary; his granddaughter Elizabeth Bryant; his grandson Joseph Studson; his daughter Studson (who might have been deceased). [9]

Children of Thomas and Deborah Hyland:

i. Thomas Hyland was baptized on 15 November 1629 in St. Mildred's Church, in Tenterden, Kent. He died in 1706. married Elizabeth Stockbridge.

ii. Samuel Hyland died in 1676 as a soldier in King Philip's War. [6, 290] He married Isabel Unknown.

Samuel's undated will was attested to on 30 October 1677. [10] He named his wife—suggesting she might be with child—and his sister Bryan's children. [10]

Isabel Hyland, widow of Samuel Hyland of Scituate, obtained letters of administration on Samuel's estate. On 5 March 1677/8 the court ordered that this would continue as long as paid all debts and bequests and was prepared to give an accounting. [5, 5: 93]

iii. Elizabeth Hyland was born on 23 September 1632 in Scituate. [11] She died after 1688. [11] She married Francis James before 1657. [11] Francis, the son of Philip James, was probably born about 1632 in or near Hingham, England. [11] He died on 29 November 1684 in Hingham, Massachusetts. [11]

The will of Thomas Hingham of Scituate mentions grandson Philip James, the son of Francis James of Scituate, and "his mother, my daughter Elizabeth James." [11]

iv. Mary Hyland married John Bryant as his third wife in April 1664 in Scituate. [12] He married first Mary Lewis. [10] He married second Elizabeth Wetherell on 22 December 1657 in Scituate. [10]

In his 1684 will John left his son Benjamin 20 shillings that were in trust with his grandfather Hyland. [6, 227–8]

v. Deborah Hyland "appears" to have been the second wife of Sergeant William Ticknor. [6, 290] William married first Hannah Stockbridge.

vi. Ruth Hyland was unmarried in l664. She might have been the mother of her father's grandson Joseph Studson.

viii. Sarah Hyland married Thomas Turner on 6 January 1652 in Scituate. [12]
