STEPHEN ATWOOD (c. 1645/1649–by 1722), son of Stephen Atwood and Abigail Dunham

APPHIA BANGS (1651–aft. 1722), daughter of Edward Bangs and Rebecca Bangs

Stephen Atwood was born about 1645/1649. He married as her second husband Apphia Bangs on 6 March 1677 in Eastham. [1][2]

Apphia Bangs, the daughter of Edward and Rebecca Bangs, was born on 15 October 1651 in Eastham. [2][3] She married first John Knowles on 28 December 1670—the same day her twin sister married—in Eastham. [1][2]

In his 19 October 1677 will, Edward Bangs left his daughter Atwood four pounds. [3] In his 1766 will, Joshua Bangs named his eight sisters, among them Apphia Atwood. He named her sons John Knowles and Joseph Atwood executors and left them each a house and land. [3]

In the estate papers of John Knowles the court made an entry on 1 March 1676 that his widow had married Steven Wood. [3] The court had appointed Lieutenant Sparrow and Jonathan Bangs to administer John Knowles's estate, but noting Stephen's marriage, the court released them from this obligation and appointed Stephen ("Stephen Wood, Jr.) in their place on 6 March 1676/7. [4]

Stephen Atwood, Sr. and Stephen Atwood, Jr. are on a 1695 list of inhabitants of Eastham. [5]

Stephen made his will on 20 May 1715; it was proved on 12 July 1722. He left his wife Apphia the improvement of his property in Eastham for her widowhood. He named his sons Stephen (who received a double portion of his movable estate), Eleazer and Joshua (who had received their portions), and Thomas (who received the remainder of the estate). The movable estate was divided among his children Machiel and Joseph Atwood and his daughters Hannah and Apphia Atwood. On 12 July 1722 his widow Apphia made oath to the inventory. [5][6]
