Reverend Stephen Bachiler (c. 1561–1656)

Reverend Stephen Bachiler was born about 1561 and he was buried on 31 October 1656 in All Hallows Staining, London. He married first, by 1590, a woman who was said to be named Anne and was closely related in some way to Reverend John Bates. He married second the widow Christian Weare on 2 March 1623/4 in Abbotts Ann, Hampshire. He married third Helena Mason, the widow of Reverend Thomas Mason, on 26 March 1627 in Abbots Ann. She was born about 1583 and died on 3 May 1647. He married fourth Mary, the widow of Robert Beedle, on 14 March 1648. She soon left Stephen and cohabited with George Rogers at Kittery. She was later sentenced to 39 lashes and to be branded with an "A" six weeks after the birth of her illegitimate child.
Stephen matriculated at St. John's College, Oxford, and received his B.A. on 3 February 1585/6. He came to New England on the William and Francis in 1632 and lived at Lynn, Ipswich (supposedly), Yarmouth, Newbury, Hampton and Portland. He returned permanently to England in 1650 or early 1651.
On 20 April 1647 Stephen Bachiler, late of Hampton and then of Strawberry Bank (Portsmouth) for love and affection conveyed his dwelling house and land to his grandson John Sanborn, with the proviso that John would give each of Stephen's other three grandchildren—Stephen and William Sanborn and Nathaniel Bachiler—twenty pounds each.
Children of Reverend Stephen Bachiler:
i. Nathaniel Bachilerwas born about 1590. He married first Hester Mercer (or LeMercier). He married second Margery Unknown by 1645.
Nathaniel did not come to New England, but his son Nathaniel came and lived at Hampton.
ii. Deborath Bachiler was born about 1592. She married John Wing by 1611.
Deborah and her family came to New England and lived at Sandwich.
iii. Stephen Bachiler was born about 1594.
Stephen matriculated at Magdalen College, Oxford on 18 June 1610 and was ordained a deacon at Oxford on 19 September 1613. There is no record of him after 1614.
iv. Samuel Bachiler was born say 1597.
Samuel was a minister; he lived in Gorcum, Holland and had a wife and family.
v. Ann Bachiler was born about 1601. She married first Unknown Sanborn by 1620. She married second Henry Atkinson on 20 January 1631/2 in Strood, Kent.
vi. Theodate Bachiler was born say 1610. She married Christopher Hussey about 1635.
