Richard Dana (bp. 1617–1690)

Anne Bullard (1627–1711), daughter of Robert Bullard and Anne Martyn


Richard Dana is probably the son of Robert and Elizabeth (Barlowe) Dawney, baptized on 31 October 1617 in the Manchester Collegiate Church in Manchester, England. [1] He married Anne Bullard about 1648 in Cambridge. [2] On 2 April 1690, Samuel Sewall wrote in his diary, "Father Dana falls from his scaffold and dies." [3]

Edward Dawney was buried on 23 April 1611 in Natland, Cumbria, England. He married Agnes ___ about 1565. She was buried on 16 December 1616 in Kendal (about two miles north of Natland).

Children of Edward Dawney, born in Kendal:

i. Edward was born about 1567. v. Ellen was baptized on 12 September 1576.

ii. James was born about 1569.

vi. Rowland was baptized on 2 March 1578/9. He married Ellen Lindeth in Kendal. She was buried on 29 March 1631 in Natland.
iii. Robert was baptized on 16 June 1571. vii. Elizabeth was baptized on 21 December 1581.
iv. William was baptized on 21 December 1573. He was buried on 6 February 1607/8 in Natland. He married Annes Easement on 29 October 1592 in Kendal. viii. Alice was buried on 13 May 1571, unmarried.

Robert Dawney (Dana) was baptized on 16 June 1571. He is probably the Robert who was buried on 24 May 1644 in Manchester. He probably married first Elizabeth Barlowe on 10 April 1597 in the Collegiate Church in Manchester. She died about 1625. He married second Ellen ___.

Robert was a tanner.

i. Mary was baptized on 19 March 1597/8. She died young. vii. James was baptized on 8 December 1611. He was buried on 21 March 1611/2.
ii. Edward was baptized on 24 August 1599. He was buried on 6 September 1633. viii. Alice was baptized on 21 March 1612/3. She was buried on 3 June 1621.
iii. Henry was baptized on 7 March 1611/2. He was buried on 13 June 1602. ix. Anne was baptized on 23 February 1615/6. She was buried on 6 May 1616.
iv. Ellen was baptized on 22 February 1604/5. She died young. x. Richard was baptized on 31 October 1617.
v. Robert was baptized on 28 August 1607. He died young. xi. Elizabeth was baptized on 19 March 1619/20.
vi. Robert was baptized on 6 February 1608/9. He was buried on 10 April 1633.  

Ann, the daughter of Richard Bullard and Anne Martyn, was born say 1627. [2] Anne Dana died on 15 July 1711 in Cambridge. [4]

Richard and Anne's marriage record says "Richard and Anne ___, ___ 16__." [4]

Richard's family had lived on Mill Street in Manchester, as did two of his friends in New England, Henry Sewall, Jr. and Robert Walker. [1] Richard was the only person with the surname "Dana" to come to come to America for 200 years. [1]

Richard was granted land in Cambridge in 1647 and had over 100 acres in the part of Cambridge that was later Newton and Brighton. On 20 April 1656 his sold his house and 56 acres. On 29 April 1656 he sold another house and 70 acres. on 15 April 1661 he bought a farm and 108 acres. [1]

In November 1661 Richard was a constable in Cambridge. On 24 March 1663/4 he was chosen a viewer of fences. In 1665 he was a surveyor of highways. [1]

Richard was a tythingman in Cambridge on 2 April 1678 and 30 March 1680.[1] He was on the grand jury in the courts in Boston on 4 March 1678/9 and 24 December 1689. [1]

On 4 April 1682 Richard petitioned to be released from training. This was granted on the condition that he pay five shillings a year. A year later he successfully petitioned to be released from this obligation as well. [1]

Inventory was taken on the estate of Richard Dana of Cambridge on 2 April 1690. He had already disposed of some of his assets and it amounted to £209–03-06. As Richard died suddenly, he did not have time to make a will. His children Jacob, Joseph, Benjamin, and Daniel Dana, Samuel Oldham, Daniel Woodward, and Samuel Hyde, with the consent of their mother Ann Dana, signed an agreement to divide his estate on 10 April 169[1?]. They and Ann took oath to the agreement on 15 April 1695. [5]

i. John Dana was born on 15 April 1649. He died on 12 October 1649 in Cambridge. [4]

ii. Hannah (Anne) Dana was born on 8 July 1651. She was baptized as "Anne." [1] She married Samuel Oldam on 5 January 1670 in Cambridge. [4] Samuel was the son of Richard Oldam. [1] He died between 13 July 1727 and 10 June 1728 at Cambridge. [1]

iii. Samuel Dana was born on 13 October 1653. He died on 8 November 1653 in Cambridge. [4]

iv. Jacob Dana was born on 2 February 1654/5. He died on 24 December 1698. [1] He married Patience ___ about 1698. [1] She might be the daughter of William Sabin of Rehoboth. [1] She died in 1712. [1]

v. Joseph Dana (twin) was born on 21 May 1654[5?]. He died on 11 February 1699/1700 in Concord. [1] He married Mary, the daughter of Thomas, Jr. and Mary Goble. [1]

vi. Abiah Dana (twin) was born on 21 May 1655. He died on 8 December 1668 in Cambridge. [4]

vii. Benjamin Dana was born on 20 February 1661 [1659/60?]. He was baptized in the First Church in Cambridge on 8 April 1660. [1] He died on 13 August 1738 in Cambridge. [1] He married Mary Buckmaster (Buckminster) on 24 May 1688 in Cambridge. [4] She was probably the daughter of Zechariah Buckminster of Boston and Sherborn. [1] She married second as his third wife Joshua Fuller of Newton. [1] Joshua, the son of John and Elizabeth Fuller of Newton, died on 27 June 1752, age 98. [1] He married first Elizabeth Ward. [1] He married second Hannah ___. [1]

Benjamin was buried in the old Cambridge burial ground in Harvard Square. [1]

vii. Elizabeth Dana was born on 20 February 1662. She was baptized in the First Church in Cambridge on 27 April 1662. She died after 13 October 1713. She married Daniel Woodward. on 6 June 1714.

viii. Daniel Dana was born on 20 March 1663. He was baptized in the first Church in Cambridge on 3 April 1664. He died on 10 October 1749, age 85, in Cambridge. [4] He married Naomi Crosswell about 1691/2. [1] Naomi was the daughter of Thomas and Priscilla (Upham) Crosswell and the granddaughter of John and Elizabeth Upham. [1]

Daniel and Naomi are buried in the old Cambridge burial ground in Harvard Square. [1]

Daniel's son Richard Dana was the father of Hon. Francis Dana, lawyer, founding father, judge and statesman. [1]

x. Deliverance Dana was born on 5 May 1667. She died on 10 November 1741. [1] She married Ensign Samuel Hyde, the son of Job and Elizabeth (Fuller) Hyde. [1]

xi. Sarah Dana was born on 1 January 1669. She died on 11 January 1711 in Cambridge. [4]
