EDMUND RICE (d. 1663)

THOMASINE FROST (bp. 1600–1654)


Edmund Rice died on 3 My 1663 in Marlborough, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. [1, 41] He was buried in May 1663 in Sudbury, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. [2] He married first Tomasine Frost on 15 August 1618 in Bury St. Edmonds, co. Suffolk. [3] He married second Mary (Mercy) (Hurd) Brigham on 1 March 1655 in Sudbury. [1, 41][4] Mercy died on 22 December 1693 in Marlborough. [5] She married first Thomas Brigham of Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. [1, 41][5] Thomas, the son of John and Constance (Watson) Brigham of Holme-on-Spalding-Moor, Lancashire, was born about 1603 and died on 8 December 1653 in Cambridge. [5] She married third William Hunt of Marlborough in October or November 1664. [1, 41][5] William, the son of William Hunt, was born about 1605. [1, 47] He was buried in October 1667 in Marlborough. [5] He married first Elizabeth Best. [1, 47]

Thomasine Frost, the daughter of Edward and Thomasine Belgrave, was baptized on 10 August 1600 in Stanstead, co. Suffolk. [3] She died on 13 June 1654 in Sudbury. [3][4]

Edmund and Henry Rice were early settlers of Sudbury in 1638 or 1639. [1, 26][6] Edmund was a freeman on 13 May 1640. [1, 42] He was appointed to a committee to apportion land in Sudbury on 4 September 1639. [1, 42] He was a deputy to the General Court for several years. [1, 42]

Edmund moved to Marlborough. [6]

An inventory of the estate of Edmund Rice was taken on 15 May 1663; it amounted to about 566 pounds. [7] Edmund died intestate and his widow and children petitioned for a division on 16 June 1663. The court approved and Mercy was appointed the administratrix. On 6 October 1663 she appeared in court and asked for a suspension until it was clear what Benjamin was entitled to. Otherwise, she said, she and her children with Edmund would be harmed. [8]

Children of Edmund and Thomasine Rice:

i. Mary Rice was baptized on 23 August 1619 in Stanstead, co. Suffolk. [9] She apparently died before her father.

ii. Henry Rice was baptized on 13 February 1621/1 in Stanstead. [9] He married Elizabeth Moore on 1 January 1643 in Sudbury. [4] Elizabeth was the daughter of John Moore of Sudbury. [10]

iii. Edward Rice was baptized on 26 October 1622 in Stanstead. [9] He married Ann (Agnes), the daughter of John and Martha Bent [1, 46].

iv. Thomas Rice was baptized on 26 January 1625/6 in Stanstead. He married Mary King

v. Lydia Rice was baptized on 9 March 1627/8 in Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire. [9] She died on 5 April 1675. [1, 53] She married Hugh Drury. [1, 53] Hugh died on 6 July 1689. [1, 53] He married second Mary, the widow of Reverend Edward Fletcher. [1, 53]

Hugh and Lydia are buried in the Chapel Burial Ground in Boston. [1, 53]

vii. Matthew Rice was baptized on 28 February in Berkhamstead. [9] He married Martha Lamson on 7 July 1654 in Sudbury. [4][11] Martha, the daughter of Barnabas and Mary Lamson, was baptized on 13 January 1633/4 in Ridgewell, co. Essex. [11]

viii. Daniel Rice was baptized on 1 November 1632 in Berkhamstead. [9] He was buried there nine days later. [9]

ix. Samuel Rice was baptized on 12 November 1634 in Berkhamstead. [9] He died on 25 February 1684 in Marlborough. [2] He married Elizabeth King on 8 November 1655 in Sudbury. [4][12] Elizabeth was the sister of Samuel's sister-in-law Mary King. [12] She was buried on 30 October 1667 in Marlborough. [2]

ix. Joseph Rice was baptized on 13 March 1637/8 in Berkhamstead. [9] He married Mercy King on 4 May 1658 in Sudbury. [4] Mercy was the sister of Joseph's sister-in-law Mary King. He married second Mercy Kerley on 10 November 1708 in Marlborough. [2] She died on 16 October 1727 in Marlborough. [2] Joseph married third Elizabeth Robenson on 4 December 1728 in Marlborough. [2]

x. Benjamin Rice was born on 31 May 1640 in Sudbury. [4] He married first Mary Brown. [9] He married second Mary (Chamberlain) Graves. [9]

Children of Edmund Rice and Mercy (Hurd) Brigham:

xi. Ruth Rice was born on 29 September 1659 in Sudbury. [9] She married Samuel Wells. [9]

xii. Ann Rice was born about 1661. [1, 41]
