THOMAS MATSON (c. 1601–1676/7)

AMY CHAMBERS (say 1613–1678)


Thomas Matson was born about 1601. He died between 9 June 1676 and 26 April 1677. He married Amy, the daughter of Thomas Chambers of Assington. [1]

Thomas Chambers was born about 1554. He was buried on 8 June 1630 in Assington, co. Suffolk. Thomas of Assington, clerk, mad his will on 7 June 1630. He named his wife Alice. He did not name all his children, but he did name Margaret, Amy, and Mary. Anderson suggests that this Thomas is the father of the Amy here. [2]

Amy Chambers, was born say 1613. She died between 28 February 1677/8 and 1 May 1678.

Thomas deposed that he was 73 on 26 January 1674/5. [1]

Thomas migrated in 1630 and settled in Boston. [1] He moved to Braintree by 1635. [1]

Thomas was a gunsmith. [1]

Thomas joined the Boston church in the winter of 1630/1; Amy was admitted in autumn 1632. [1][2] Thomas was a freeman on 4 March 1633/4. [1]

Thomas was on the Massachusetts Bay petit jury in 1634. [1] He was a fence viewer in Boston on 9 February 1634/5. [1]

Thomas was disarmed on 20 November 1637 as a supporter of Wheelwright and Hutchinson. About 22 November 1637 he withdrew his support of them. [1]

Thomas and his wife Amy were recommended to the church in Braintree on 16 February 1639/40. [1]

Thomas was a selectman in Braintree on 19 December 1642. He was a Boston constable on 12 March 1653/4. [1] He was a sergeant of the train band by 1644. [1]

On 13 April 1670 Theodore Atkinson, Sr., felt maker of Boston, for the love and affection he bore his brother-in-law Thomas Matson, Sr. of Boston and Anne[!], Thomas's wife and sister of Theodore's first wife Abigail, as well as their children and grandchildren, granted land to these children and grandchildren after his death. The children were Thomas, Matson, Jr., John Matson, Joshua Matson and Abigail Matson. The grandchildren were Thomas and Hannah Matson, the children of Thomas, Jr. and Anne[!], John and Mary Matson, the children of John Matson. [1]

Amy's sister Abigail Chambers married Theodore Atkinson. [2]

Thomas Matson made his will on 9 June 1676; it was proved on 26 April 16777. He left bequests to his wife Amy, his sons Thomas, John, and Joshua Matson, and his daughter Abigail Wheatley, the wife of Lionel Wheatley, and his son-in-law Lionel Wheatley. The inventory was taken on 20 April 1677; it amounted to £735-08-06. [1]

Amy Matson made her will on 28 February 1677/8; it was proved on 1 May 1678. She made bequests to her granddaughter Amy Matson (the daughter of her son John), her daughter-in-law Mary Matson (the wife of her son Thomas), her grandchildren Thomas and Hannah Matson (the children of her son Thomas), her daughter-in-law Jane Matson (the wife of her son John), her grandchild Mary Matson, her daughter-in-law Elizabeth Matson (the wife of her son Joshua), her grandchildren Abigail and Martha Wheatley (the daughters of her deceased daughter Abigail Wheatley). [1]

Children of Thomas Matson and Amy Chambers:

i. Thomas Matson was baptized on 27 October 1633 in Boston. [1] He married the widow Mary Read on 14 August 1660 in Boston. [1]

ii. John Matson was baptized on 10 July 1636 in Boston. [1] He married first Mary, the daughter of William Cotton of Boston on 7 March 1659/60. [1] He married second Jane ___.

iii. Joshua Matson was born on 23 July 1640 in Braintree. [1][3] He died by 14 July 1686, when inventory was taken on his estate. [3] He married Elizabeth, the daughter of Nathaniel and Mary Thomas of Marshfield. [1][3] She was born in 1646 in Marshfield. [3] She married second Sampson Moor on 15 December 1687 in Charlestown. [3]

iv. Abigail Matson was born say 1642. She died by 5 September 1677. She married Lionel Wheatley.
