WILLIAM SWIFT (1654–1700/1), son of William Swift and Ruth Unknown

ELIZABETH UNKNOWN (d. aft. 1716)


William, the son of William Swift, was born on 28 August 1654 in Sandwich. [1] He died between 17 June 1700 and 1 May 1701. He married Elizabeth Unknown.

It is probable that Elizabeth married second as his second wife John Gibbs on 9 November 1716. [1][2] John, the son of Thomas Gibbs, was born on 12 September 1644. [2] He married first Jane Blackwell about 1669. [2] Jane, the daughter of Michael Blackwell, was born about 1650 and died between 2 April 1711 and 9 November 1716. [2]

On 18 May 1880 William Swift, Jr. was appointed a grandjuryman. [3] On 16 January 1682, he was chosen supervisor of highways. [3]

William Swift, Jr., carpenter of Sandwich, made will on 17 June 1700. He mentions his wife Elizabeth, his eldest sons William and Joseph, his son Benjamin and refers to other sons and daughters, but not by name. Inventory was taken on 1 May 1701. The witnesses, Thomas Tupper, Martha Tupper and John Jennings, testified to the will and Elizabeth took oath to the inventory on 12 May 1701. [4]

i. William Swift was born on 24 January 1679. [5] He married Lydia Weeks on 9 October 1707 in Falmouth. [5] He died before 13 October 1750, when administration on his estate was granted to his widow Lydia. [5]

ii. Benjamin Swift was born in 1682. [5] He married Hannah Wing on 24 February 1703/4 in Sandwich. [5]

iii. Joseph Swift was born in November 1687. He married Rebecca (Clark) (Ellis) Morton on 4 March 1730/1. [5]

iv. Samuel Swift was born in December 1690. He moved to Plymouth and died there in 1716. [5] He married Abigail Unknown. [5]

v. Joanna Swift was born on 9 March 1692/3. [2]She probably died shortly after 1719. [2] She married Thomas Gibbs on 22 October 1713 in Sandwich. [1] Thomas, the son of Thomas and Anne (Warren) Swift and grandson of Thomas Gibbs and Nathaniel and Sarah (Walker) Warren, was born on 28 January 1678/9 and probably died shortly before 26 May 1746. [2]

vi. Thomas Swift, was born in December 169_ in Sandwich. He may be the Thomas Swift who died on 24 December 1770 in Rochester. He married Thankful Morey.

vii. Elizabeth Swift (twin) was born on 11 January 169_. She might be the Elizabeth who married Samuel Gibbs. [2] Samuel, the son of Samuel and Patience (Butler) Gibbs and grandson of Thomas Gibbs and Thomas and Dorothy Butler, was born on 23 June 1649. [2]

viii. Thankful Swift (twin) was born on 11 January 169_. She married Benjamin Morey of Plymouth on 3 November 1715 in Sandwich. [1] Benjamin was the brother of Thankful Morey and son of Jonathan Morey. [6]

ix. Josiah Swift was born on [no date given]. He probably died young. [5]

x. Ebenezer Swift was born on [no date given]. He married Abigail Gibbs on 13 February 1723/4 in Sandwich. [1] Abigail, the daughter of Benjamin and Anne (Tupper) Swift and granddaughter of John and Jane (Blackwell) Gibbs and Thomas and Martha Tupper, was born on 8 September 1705 and died on 19 May 1757.
