ANTHONY COOMBS (d. aft. 1729)

DORCAS WOODEN (1672–prob. by 1729), daughter of John Wooden and Mary Unknown


Anthony Coombs married Dorcas Wooden on 5 September 1688 in Wells, York county, Maine. [1,2]

Dorcas, the daughter of John Woodin and Mary Johnson, was born on 10 February 1671/[2?] in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts. [3] She may have died by 3 July 1729 when her husband gave his house and 15 acres to their son John without her participating in the contract. [3]

Anthony came to New England in 1675. [1] An unlikely family tradition is that Anthony had French parents who gave him to a monk to be a priest, but Anthony ran away. [3]

Children of Anthony Coombs and Dorcas Wooden:

i. Mary Coombs was baptized on 3: 9m: 1689 in Beverly, Essex County, Massachusetts. [4] She married her first cousin Thomas Raymond of Beverly on 20 May 1708 in Rochester, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. [3] Thomas, the son of John and Martha (Woodin) Raymond, was born on 23 June 1687 in Beverly. [3]

ii. Peter Coombs was was baptized on 18 :8m: 1691 in Beverly. [4, son of Mihel[!] and Dorcas] Peter, the child of Anthony and Dorcas (Wooden) Coombs and husband of Joanna Hodgkins, died in 1768. [1] He married Joanna Hodgkins.

Peter lived in New Meadows. [1] New Meadows was an early name of the settlement between Harpswell and Georgetown, Maine. [3]

iii. Tabitha Coombs was baptized in 1693 in the Wenham, Essex County, Massachusetts. [1,5] She married Thomas Berry, who was probably of New Meadows. [1,3]

Thomas and Tabitha lived in New Meadows. [3]

iv. Anthony Coombs was baptized in April 1695 Wenham. [1,5] He married Mercy Hodgkins on 22 October 1722 in Bowdoin, Sagadhoc county, Maine. [1]

v. John Coombs, a child of John and Dorcas (Wooden), died in infancy. [1]

vi. John Coombs was was born in 18 March 1699 in Rochester. [1] He married his first cousin Lydia, the daughter of Peter and Elizabeth (Mallett) Woodin, on 9 January 17123/4 in Rochester. [1,3]

vii. Hannah Coombs was born on 30 November 1700 in Rochester. [1] Hannah, the daughter of Anthony and Dorcas (Wooden) Coombs, married Nicholas Hicks on 24 June 1729 in Rochester. [1]

viii. Rosilla Coombs was born on 23 November 1702 in Rochester. She died on 8 March 1737 in Rochester. She married Nathaniel Whitcomb.

ix. Ithamer Coombs was born on 20 November 1704 in Rochester. [1] He married Hannah Andrews on 4 November 1731 in Rochester. [1]

x. Joshua Coombs was born on 23 July 1706 in Rochester. [1] Joshua, the child of Anthony and Dorcas (Wooden) Coombs and husband of Elizabeth Pratt, died before 1789, when his will was probated in Bath, Maine. [1] He married Elizabeth Pratt on 10 September 1729 in Bowdoin. [1] Elizabeth was the dauagher of Eleazer (Benaya, Joshua) Pratt. [1]

Joshua settled in New Meadows in 1751. [1] He was a shoemaker. [1]

xi. Frances Coombs was born on 20 July 1708 in Rochester. [1] Frances of Rochester married James Pratt of Middleborough on 15 April 1729 in Bowdoin. [1]

xii. Jane Coombs was born on 29 March 1710 in Rochester. [1] She might be the Jane of Bowdoin who married Zachariah Beal of Bowdoin. [1]
