THOMAS READ (d. 1701)

KATHERINE UNKNOWN (d. 1677)

Thomas was the son of Thomas Read and Rachel ___ of Colchester, co. Essex. He was the brother of Mary Read.

Thomas Read, Sr. died on 13 September 1701 in Sudbury. [1] He married first Katherine Unknown. She died on 26 September 1677 in Sudbury. [1] He married second Mary Wood on 7 March 1677/[8] in Sudbury. [1] He married Arabella Thong on 29 December 1689 in Sudbury. [1] She died on 29 April 1717 in Sudbury. [1]

Thomas Read of Sudbury made his will on 9 September 1701 and witnesses testified on 6 October 1701. Thomas mentioned his wife Arabella, his son Thomas, his cousin John Bacon of Watertown, the youngest son of his son Thomas and his grandson Thomas, son of his son Thomas. His grandson Thomas was his executor. [2]

By the will and depositions of Rev. Edmund Brown, Thomas was his cousin [or nephew]. Thomas settled in land in the Lanham district of Sudbury that he bought from Edmund Brown while in England. [3]

Thomas may be the Thomas Reed who was a freeman in 1656. [4] He was appointed juror for Sudbury in 1663 [5] He was a tything man. [3]

In 1670 Thomas Reed, Sr. sold one third of a farm originally granted to Rev. Edmund Brown near Doeskin Hill in Sudbury to Matthew Gibbs. [6]

In 1677 the town gave Thomas leave to build a sawmill on Hop Brook. [3]

Thomas Reed lost only three pounds worth of property in the Indian attack on Sudbury on 21 Apr 1676. [7]

Arabella Read of Sudbury made her will on 20 April 1717. She freed her "Negro maid servant" Frank, left her her estate, and name her her executrix. Witnesses testified on 20 May 1717; probate was on 2 June 1717. [2]

Children of Thomas Read:

i. Thomas Read died after 1726, probably in Oxford, Massachusetts. He married Mary Goodrich.
