FITCH ADAMS (1772–1837), son of Phinehas Adams and Lydia Fitch

AMY BACON (1779–1816), daughter of Captain Asa Bacon and Abigail Whitney

Fitch, the son of Phinehas and Lydia (Fitch) Adams, was born on 20 January 1772 in Norwich, New London County, Connecticut. [1][2] Fitch, the son of Phinehas and Lydia Adams, was baptized by the Reverend Mr. John Bacon of Boston on 26 April 1772 in Canterbury. [1][3] He died of typhus fever on 11 February 1837 after a short sickness of three weeks. [1] Fitch married first Amy Bacon on 16 January 1799 or (town record) 1800 in Canterbury. ][1][4] He married second Sarah Morgan of Lisbon, New London County, the daughter of Elisha and Olive (Coit) Morgan, [5] on 3 (church) or 6 June 1818 in Lisbon. [1][6] Sarah was born on 4 December 1777. [5] She died on 14 December 1855 and is buried in the Yantic Cemetery in Norwich. [7]

The minister who baptized Fitch was the uncle of his future wife.

Fitch Adam's gravestone in the Hyde Cemetery in Canterbury says he died on 12 February 1837, age 66. [7][8]

Amy Bacon, the daughter of Asa and Abigail (Whitney) Bacon, was born on 13 October 1779 in Canterbury. [1][3] She died of consumption on 24 May 1816 in Canterbury. [1]

The gravestone of Amy, the wife of Fitch, in the Hyde Cemetery says she died on 24 May 1816, age 36. [7][8]

According to the census, in 1800, Fitch and Amy lived in Preston, New London County, in a household with one male aged 26 to 44, one female aged 16 to 25, and an [unidentified] boy aged 10 to 15. [9]

In 1813, Congress levied a direct tax on property totaling three million dollars. As required by the Constitution, this was apportioned among the states according to their population. Fitch was assessed a tax of 3.12 dollars on two houses and 127 acres of land he owned in Preston on 2 August 1813. He failed to pay this tax, and on 6 September 1815, it was advertised that his property would be offered in a public sale in Hartford on 17 October 1815. [10]

Between 1800 and 1810, Fitch and Amy moved from Preston to Canterbury. According to the census, in 1810, they were living in a household with one male 26 to 44 [Fitch], one female 26 to 44 [Amy], three males and one female under ten [Jabez, David, Mary, and George], an unidentified male between 16 and 25, and an unidentified female between ten and 15. [9] Amy was admitted to the congregational church in Canterbury on 26 August 1810, and her children Jabez, David, Mary, and George were baptized that day. [3]

Fitch does not appear in the carefully written 1820 census in Canterbury. He was received as a member of the Congregational Church in Canterbury on 5 March 1826. [3] According to the census, in 1830, Fitch headed a household in Canterbury with two males 50 to 59 and one female 50 to 59 [Fitch, Sarah, and an unidentified person], one [unidentified] male 20 to 29, one unidentified male ten to 14, a female ten to 14 [daughter Sarah], and a person of color ten to 23. [9]

Fitch Adams made his will on 1[?] February 1837. He mentioned his wife Sarah, his children—but not by name, his grandson John Adams, the son of David F. Adams, and his grandson Asa Bacon Cary. His witnesses testified before James Cary, Justice of the Peace. Inventory of 2,901.08 dollars was presented on 15 March 1837. [11]

Note: There was another Fitch Adams in Canterbury. He was Fitch Davenport Adams, Fitch's half first cousin once removed, born in 1823.

Children of Fitch Adams and Amy Bacon:

i. Jabez Emworth Adams was born on 22 October 1800 and died on 3 April 1801. [1]

Jabez's gravestone in the Baldwin Cemetery in Canterbury says that Jabez, the son of Fitch and Mary [a transcription error for Amy], died on 5 April 1801, age five months." [7][8]

ii. Jabez Adams was born on 20 May 1802. [1] He was baptized on 26 August 1810 in Canterbury. [3] He died on 24 October 1856, age 54 years, and is buried in the Hyde Cemetery. [7][8] He married Deborah Hyde on 25 September 1839 in Canterbury. [1][3] Deborah died on 25 June 1843, aged "only 23," presumably from complications of childbirth. [1] He married second Jane Lester on 8 December 1851 in Plainfield, Windham County. [4] Jane, the daughter of Sessions and Fanny (Gallup) Lester, was born on 16 November 1824 in Plainfield. [4] She died on 10 June 1859, age 34 years, and is buried in the Hyde Cemetery. [7][8]

According to the census, in 1850, Jabez lived in Canterbury. He was a 48-year-old farmer, born in Lisbon, with real estate worth 5,300 dollars. [9]

Jabez Adams of Canterbury, being in "feeble health," made his will on 22 October 1856 in Canterbury; it was proved on 6 November 1856. He left his wife Jane C. Adams the use of his house and a lot of land called "rowen," with a new barn and sawmill; enough wood from his woodlot called "cat tail" to provide her with firewood and lumber for repairs; provisions and hay; a cow; his horse, buggy, sleigh, and harness; household furniture and 1,500 dollars. He left the residue to his son Sessions L. Adams and the child his wife was supposed to be pregnant with. If they should die, the residue was to go to his brother David F. Adams, his sister Mary B. Cary, the wife of Benajah Cary, and their heirs, with 25 dollars to go to his sister Sarah Osgood, wife of William Osgood of Norwich. He appointed his wife and his brother David F. Adams his executors. [12]

iii. David Fitch Adams was born on 1 July 1804. [1] He was baptized on 26 August 1810 in Canterbury. [3] According to his gravestone in the Hyde Cemetery, he died on 10 July 1874, age 70. [7] He married Abby Carey on 3 (4 town, 6 church) April 1832 in Canterbury.[1][3]

According to the census, in 1850, David F. and Abigail K. lived in Canterbury. David was a 45-year-old farmer born in Lisbon with real estate worth 2,500 dollars; Abigail K. was 42 years old and born in Canterbury. In 1860, David and Abigail lived in Canterbury with their apparent son William, a teacher. David was a farmer with real estate worth $3,500 and a personal estate of 1,000 dollars. In 1870, David and Abigail lived in Canterbury with their apparent son William, his wife, and child. David was a farmer with real estate worth $1,600 and a personal estate of $3,000. Abigail had real estate worth 1,000 dollars. William was a teacher. [9]

David F. Adams made his will on 19 November 1869. He mentioned his wife, Abigail K. Adams, and his son William Spaulding Adams. [11]

iv. Mary Bacon Adams was born on 9 September 1806. She was baptized on 26 August 1810 in Canterbury. She died on 9 July 1876. She married James Benajah Cary.

v. George Leonard Adams was born on 29 August 1808 in Canterbury. [1][3] He was baptized on 26 August 1810 in Canterbury. [3] Doctor George Adams died on 1 May 1844, age 35. [7] George L. of New York City married Elizabeth G. Pellet of Canterbury on 20 April 1836. [3] Elizabeth, the wife of Doctor George L., died on 17 August 1844, age 31 years. [7] George and Elizabeth are buried in the Hyde Cemetery. [7]

George was a student at Yale University medical school in 1832. [13]

vi. Abigail Whitney Adams was born on 5 May 1811 in Canterbury. [1][3] She died of consumption at home on 13 October 1826 about ten in the morning. [1] Her gravestone in the Hyde Cemetery says that Abigail W., the daughter of Fitch and Amy, died on 13 October 1826, age 15 years. [7]

vii. Lydia Adams was probably born about 4 August 1812. [1] Lydia, the daughter of Mr. Fitch Adams, was baptized on 30 October 1813, on his wife's account. [3] Lydia is buried with her mother in the Hyde Cemetery. Their gravestone says Lydia, the daughter of Fitch and Amy, died on 5 November 1815, age 15 months. [7][8]

In John Bacon's account, Lydia was "born about the 4th August 1810 & died 5th November 1811 aged 11 months." [1] John probably had the years wrong. [1]

Children of Fitch Adams and Sarah Morgan:

viii. Sarah Morgan Adams was born on 11 June 1819. [1] Sarah Morgan, the daughter of Fitch and Sarah Adams, was baptized in 1827. [3] She died on 3 January 1901. [7] She married William Coit Osgood of Norwich as his third wife on 5 October 1847 in Canterbury. [4] William died on 14 August 1909. [7] He married first Sarah T. McCall. She died on 5 August 1841, age 24, and is buried in the Goshen Cemetery in Lebanon, New London County. [7] William married second Adaline Browning. [7] She died on 10 November 1845. [7]

William, Adaline, and Sarah are buried in the Yantic Cemetery in Norwich. [7]
