I-J-2-g. MARTIN DAVID SIBERT (1898 – 1960), son of Major General William Luther Sibert4 (William3, David2, John David1)

Martin David Sibert was born on 11 September 1898 in Little Rock. [1] He died on 29 April 1960 in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama. [2] He married first Hannah White. [3] Hannah, the daughter of Amos and Mary Josephine (Bracken) White, was born on 29 September 1893. [4] She died of a burst appendix on 28 October 1935 and is buried in the Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati. [4][5] Martin married second Velma Lorene Martin. [4] Velma, the daughter of Oria and Catherine (Haubner) Martin, was born on 17 March 1908 in Kentucky and died on 31 July 1969. [4]

Marvin[!] D. Sibert, aged 34, of Wyoming, Ohio, salesman, and Hannah White, aged 39, of Wyoming, Ohio, clerk, obtained a marriage license on 16 November 1932 in Cincinnati. [6]

Martin and Velma are buried in the Crestwood Memorial Cemetery in East Gadsden, Etowah County. Their gravestones say: [4]

"Private Martin D. Sibert, twelfth United States Army infantry, increased greatly in prestige, following the discovery that he is the son of Major General William L. Sibert. Young Sibert, without the knowledge of his family, enlisted at Manhattan, Kan., and will be written down as an unassigned recruit for service in the Philippines."

Martin enlisted in the U.S. Army on 13 October 1917 at Fort Logan, California. He served in Co. A of the 12th Infantry until 10 August 1918, when he was transferred to Co. H of the 31st Infantry. [7]

The 31st Infantry ("the Polar Bear Regiment") was part of the American Expeditionary Force, Siberia. It guarded the Trans-Siberian Railway in bitter cold. On 2 September 1918, Private Martin D. Sibert embarked on the Sheridan from Fort Mason, California, to be transported as part of the Siberian replacement troops. Corporal Martin D. Sibert is on a list of "Enlisted men, 31st Infantry Sick in hospital" who were transported back on the Sheridan and arrived in San Francisco on 16 June 1919. [8]

Martin was honorably discharged on 29 August 1919. [7]

On 19 May 1934, Martin lived in Pittsburgh, Alleghany County, Pennsylvania. [7]

According to the census, in 1940, Martin D., aged 41 and born in Arkansas, and Velma, aged 32 and born in Kentucky, lived in Kansas, Etowah County, Alabama. Martin was a farmer. In 1950, Martin D., aged 51, and Velma, aged 42, lived in Kansas with their daughter Mary K, aged eight and born in Alabama, and their son, Martin L., aged five and born in Alabama. [9]

Children of Martin David Sibert and Velma Lorene Martin:

i. Mary Katherine Sibert was born in 1942 in Alabama. [4] She died on 26 September 1992. [4] She is buried in the Crestwood Memorial Cemetery in East Gadsden. [4] She married [possibly living] Papoi.

ii. Martin Luther Sibert was born in 1944 in Alabama. [4] He died on 10 April 1992. [4] He is buried in the Crestwood Memorial Cemetery. [4]
