JESSE CARL SIBERT (1889 – 1967), son of Adolphus Jessie Sibert4 (Henry3, David2, John David1)

Jesse Carl Sibert was born on 15 September 1889 in Grove Oak, DeKalb County, Alabama. [1][2][3][4] Jesse, the son of Adolph and Elizabeth (Simpson) Sibert, died on 17 December 1967, aged 78, in Piedmont, Calhoun County, Alabama. [2, 1966][3][5] Jesse, aged 21, married Laura Bell Ryan, aged 23, on 14 September 1910 in Section, Jackson County, Alabama. [1][2][6] Laura, the daughter of John Simpson and Adelia Alrosa (Richey) Ryan, was born on 10 May 1887 in Alabama. [1][2][5] She died on 19 November 1961, aged 73, in Piedmont. [2, aged 74][5][7] Jesse and Laura are buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Jacksonville, Calhoun County. [2]

According to his 6 June 1917 World War I draft card, Jesse was a paddler. He was tall and slender with dark eyes and hair; he was missing his right leg. [4]

According to the census, on 20 January 1920, Jessey C., aged 30, and Larra B., aged 31, lived in Graham, DeKalb County, Alabama with their children Luther, aged nine Clow, aged eight; Catheran, aged five; Ray, aged three; and Fred, aged nine months. Jessey was a peddler for a dry goods grocery. On 2 April 1930, Jesse C., aged 40, and Laura B., aged 41, lived in Jacksonville with their children Lother D., aged 19; Cloe D., aged 17; Roy S., aged 13; Fred, aged 11; Latham, aged nine; Jesse, aged five; Bettie F., aged three; and Sarah L., aged five months. Jesse was a house contractor[?]. The entire family was born in Alabama. On 9 April 1940, Jessie C., aged 49, and Laura B., aged 50, lived in Jacksonville with their children Jessie M, aged 14; Betty J., aged 12; and Louise, aged ten. Jessie was not employed. On 17 April 1950, Jesse C., aged 60, and Laura, aged 62, lived in Jacksonville with a lodger, Eula Bullock. Jesse was unable to work. [8]

According to Laura's obituary, she was survived by her husband Jesse Sibert; her five sons, Colonel Luther Sibert of Van Nuys, California; Colonel Ray Sibert of Jacksonville, Fred E. Sibert of Orlando, Florida, Dr. Latham of Elberton, Georgia, and M-Sgt. J.C. Sibert, Jr. of Albany, Georgia; and her three daughters, Mrs. Cloves[!] Minton of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Mrs. Betty Jenkins of Blytheville, Arkansas, and Mrs. Louise Swords of Tuscaloosa. [7]

Children of Jessie Carl Sibert and Laura B. Ryan:

i. Colonel Boston Lother Sibert was born on 12 March 1910 in Alabama. [1][2][3][9] He died on 3 September 1996, aged 86. [3][9][10] L.B., the son of J.C. and Laura B. (Ryan) Sibert, married Caroline Frances Summers on 23 September 1938 in Cherokee County, Alabama. [2][11] Carrie, the daughter of William Koger and Nola Nelson (Ligon) Summers, was born on 10 December 1914. [2] She died on 21 March 2003, aged 88. [2] Lother and Carrie are buried in the Cedar Bluff Cemetery in Ceder Bluff, Cherokee County. [2]

Lother began his career as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse on Sand Mountain. [10] In 1937, he moved to Cedar Bluff to teach math and typing. [10]

According to the census, on 8 April 1940, Lother B., aged 29, and Frances C., aged 25, lived in Cedar Bluff. Lother was a teacher; Frances was a bookkeeper for a sawmill. [8]

Lother enlisted in the U.S. Army on 25 November 1940; he was discharged on 17 March 1946. [9] He served in the Asian Pacific Theater in World War II. [10] After the war, he became a school principal. [10]

On 4 April 1950, Lother B., aged 40, and Frances S., aged 35, lived in Cedar Bluff with their two children. Lother was the principal of a secondary school. [8]

Lother served in the Korean War. [10] He re-enlisted in the army on 16 January 1951; he was discharged on 31 August 1964. [9]

Lother rose to the rank of colonel. He was the editor-in-chief of Stars and Stripes and the officer-in-charge of the Armed Forces Radio and Television in Hollywood, California. [10]

According to his obituary, Lother's survivors included his wife, Frances Summers Sibert of Cedar Bluff; his three sisters, Chloe Minton of Greenville, Louise Swords of Dothan, and Betty Jenkins of Caledonia, Mississippi; his three brothers, Ray Sibert of Jacksonville, Fred Sibert of Orlando, Florida, and Lathem Sibert of Eufaula; and two children. [10]

ii. Dorcus Cloe Sibert was born on 2 September 1911 in Alabama. [1][12] She died on 6 May 1999. [12] She married first Robert Arthur Matthews on 15 July 1933 in Calhoun County. [11] Robert was born on 24 September 1909 in Collinsville, Alabama. [13] Cloe married second Horace Barlow Minton. Horace, the son of W.E. and Frances C. (Ginter) Minton, was born on 12 December 1911 or 1912 in Piedmont, Calhoun County. [9][11][13] He died on 19 August 1997. [9] He previously married Ruth Moore on 22 January 1938 in Cherokee County. [11]

According to the census, on 15 April 1940, Robert A., aged 30, and Dorcus C., aged 28, lived in Calhoun County with their son. Robert had completed elementary school and was a salesman; Dorcus had finished two years of college. [8]

According to his World War II draft card, on 16 October 1940, Robert Arthur and his wife, Dorcus Cloe, lived in Anniston, Calhoun County and Robert was employed at a self-service station. [13]

On 28 April 1950, Horace B., aged 37, and Cloe S, aged 37, lived in Hamilton County, Tennessee with Cloe's son from her first marriage and Horace's son from a previous marriage. Horace worked on the heating system of a nylon plant and Cloe was a school teacher. [8]

iii. Margaret Catherine Sibert was born on 30 July 1914 in Alabama. [1] Catherine, the daughter of Jessie C. and Laura Belle Sibert, died on 6 December 1924, aged ten, in Pouchamville, Calhoun County. [1][5]

iv. Colonel Ray S. Sibert was born on 10 August 1916 in Sand Mountain, Alabama. [1][3][9][14] He died on 3 January 2009 in Anniston. [3][9][14] He married first Stella Inez Elrod on 6 November 1937 in Gadsden, Etowah County, Alabama. [14][15] Stella Inez, the daughter of Robert and Mary Lou (Ford) Elrod, died on 3 May 1968, aged 50, in Fort McClellan, Calhoun County. [5][16] He married second, as her second husband, Bronwyn Valerie Elrod in 1968. [14][17] Bronwyn, the daughter of Arval O. and Ethel I. (Brown) Elrod, was born on 18 January 1920 in Cullman County, Alabama. [12] She died on 21 September 2006. [12] She married first Charles Edward Merritt in 1941. [17] He died by 1968, when his widow remarried. [17]

According to the census, on 13 April 1940, Ray S., aged 23, and Inez, aged 22, lived in Calhoun County. Ray was a salesman. [8]

On 11 April 1950, Ray, aged 33, and Stella I., aged 32, lived in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina with their two children. Ray was a personnel officer in the armed forces. [8]

Ray served in the U.S. Army in World War II and Korea. [14]

According to her obituary, Inez was survived by her husband, Lieutenant Colonel Ray S. Sibert and three children. [16]

v. Frederick Edward Sibert was born on 9 March 1919 in Fyffe, DeKalb County. [1][2][12][18] He died on 15 May 2005, aged 86, presumably in Orlando, Florida. [2][11][12][18][19] He married Virginia Reece on 25 January 1940 in Calhoun County. [2][11] Virginia, the daughter of Eatherd and Mary E. (Stanfield) Reece, was born on 28 October 1919 in Detroit, Michigan and died on 13 November 2002. [12]

Fred enlisted as a sergeant in the National Guard on 25 November 1940 in Jacksonville. In civilian life he was a producer of bakery goods. [20]

According to the census, on 24 April 1950, Fred E., aged about 33, and Virginia, aged 29, lived in Jacksonville with their son Fred E., Jr., aged five, and two other children. Fred was a high school teacher; Virginia was a high school science teacher. [8]

According to his obituary, Fred moved to Orlando in 1960 and was a school administrator and teacher there. He was survived by two children. [18]

Children of Frederick Edward Sibert and Virginia Reece:

vi. Latham Ned Sibert was born on 22 April 1921 in Jacksonville. [1, 1922][2][9][12] He died on 2 February 2003, aged 81. [2][12] He married Annie Ruth Price. [21] Annie, the daughter of William Ezra and Henrietta B. (McRae) Price, was born on 18 July 1924 in Clio, Barbour County, Alabama. [2] She died on 30 November 2008, aged 84. [2] Latham and Anne are buried in the East Crawford Cemetery in East Brewton, Escambia County, Alabama. [2]

Latham served as a private in World War II. [2] He registered on 14 February 1942, aged 20. At the time he worked at the Post Exchange at Fort McClellan. [13]

According to the census, on 27 April 1950, Lathem, aged 29, and Anne, aged 25, lived in Midland City, Dale County, Alabama with their child. Lathem was a social studies teacher. [8]

vii. Sergeant Jesse Carl Sibert was born on 6 March or May 1924 or 1925 (depending on what record one looks at) in Jacksonville. [1][2][3][9][13] He died on 8 April 1983, aged 58, in Houston County, Georgia. [2][9][22] He married Eloise Herring. [23] Eloise, the daughter of Ewell and Irma Herring, was born on 13 October 1926 in Whorton Bend, Alabama. [2][23] Eloise of Centerville, Georgia died on 10 September 2013. [2][23]

According to his 6 March 1943 World War II draft registration card, Jesse, aged 18, worked at the Lee Brass Foundry. He was tall, with brown eyes and black hair. [13]

Jesse enlisted in the U.S. Army on 9 June 1943 and served for 30 years. [9]

viii. Betty Jewell Sibert was born on 3 July 1927 in Jacksonville. [1][2][3][12, 1923[!]] She died on 27 October 1996, aged 69, in Tupelo, Mississippi. [2][3][12][24] She married Charles R. Jenkins. [24] He was born on 28 February 1924 and died on 30 October 1991. [2] Betty and Charles are buried in the Egger Cemetery in Caledonia, Lowndes County, Mississippi. [2]

Charles was a senior master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force in the Vietnam War. [2]

According to the census, in 1950, Charles R., aged 26, and Betty, aged 22, lived in Chandler, Maricopa County, Arizona with their child. Charles was an instrument mechanic in the air force. [8]

According to her obituary, Betty Jewell Sibert Jenkins was the widow of Charles R. Jenkins. She left four children. [24]

ix. Sarah Louise Sibert was born on 13 October 1929 in Alabama. [2] She died on 28 November 2011, aged 82. [2][25] She married first Faudell De Pass Kuh in May 1946 in Jefferson County. [26] He was born on 6 June 1927. [2] Second Lieutenant Faudell Kuh died in a plane crash on 1 November 1946, aged 19, in Taejon, Korea. [2][27] He is buried in the Woodlawn Park North Cemetery and Mausoleum in Miami. [2] Sarah Louise Sibert Kuh, a 22-year-old widow of Jacksonville, married Irby Ray Swords of Jacksonville on 12 January 1951 in Jacksonville. [2][11] Irby, the son of Dallas Dozier and Lula Ophelia (Connally) Swords, was born on 6 December 1926. [2] He died on 6 October 2016, aged 89. [2] Irby and Sarah are buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery. [2]

Irby had a Ph. D. from the University of Alabama. [2] He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and the Air Force in Korea. [2]
