I-B-3-c. HORACE PAUL SIBERT (1887–1987), son of Adolphus Jesse Sibert4 (Henry3, David2, John David1)

Horace Paul Sibert was born on 7 August 1887 in Grove Oak, DeKalb County, Alabama. [1][2][3][4] He died on 19 March 1987, aged 99, at his home in Geraldine, DeKalb County. [2][3] He married first Minnie Roberta "Bertie" Dickerson on 17 January 1909 in DeKalb County. [1][5] She was born in 1889 or 1890 in Grove Oak. [1][2] She died on 21 December 1951 in Geraldine. [2][6] Horace married second Lizzie ___. Horace and Birtie are buried in the DeKalb Memorial Gardens in Geraldine. [2]

Grove Oak is a small community surrounded by woods and farmland on the Sand Mountain plateau in northeast Alabama. Geraldine, also on Sand Mountain, is a town about 100 miles to the northeast of Grove Oak.

According to the census (enumerated 25 April), in 1910, Paul Sibert, aged 21 and born in Alabama, and Bertie Sibert, aged 20 and born in Alabama, lived in Graham, DeKalb County, with their four-month-old son, J.D., who was born in Alabama. Paul and Bertie had been married for a year and had had one child. Paul was a farmer. [7]

Acording to his 5 June 1917 World War I draft registration card, H.P. was a farmer in Grove Oak with a wife and child. He was short, of medium build, with blue eyes and light hair. He claimed an exemption on medical grounds. [4]

In 1920, Horace P., aged 32, and Birtie, aged 30, lived in Graham with their daughters, Flora J., aged seven and born in Alabama, and Martha B., aged one and born in Alabama, and Horace's widowed mother-in-law, Martha P. Dickerson. Horace was a farmer. In 1930, Harrie P., aged 42, and Bertie, aged 40, lived in Johnson, DeKalb County with their daughter, Jeanette D.[!], aged 18; their daughter Martha B., aged 11; and their son Olan G., aged two and born in Alabama. Harrie was a farmer. They did not own a radio. In 1940, Horace P., aged 52, and Birtie, aged 50, lived in Johnson with their daughter Berthel, aged 21, and their son Olen G., aged 12. Horace was a farmer; he had graduated from elementary school. Birtie had completed first grade, Berthel had graduated from high school, and Olen had completed the sixth grade. In 1950, Horace Paul, aged 62, and Bertie, aged 60, lived in Johnson with their son Olen, aged 22. Horace was a farmer and Olen was a construction worker. [7]

According to her obituary, Minnie Roberta, nicknamed "Bertie," died on 21 December 1951 at her home in Geraldine, where she had lived for 26 years. Her survivors included her husband, Paul; her two daughters, Mrs. Janet Whitfield of Geraldine and Mrs. Berthell Lowery of Attalla; and her son, Olin G. Sibert of Geraldine. [6]

According to his obituary, Horace Paul died on 19 March 1987 at his home in Geraldine. His survivors included his wife, Lizzie Sibert; his two daughters, Jeanette Whitfield of Geraldine and Berthel Lowery of Attalla; and his son, Olen Sibert of Geraldine. [8]

Children of Horace Paul Sibert and Bertie Dickerson:

i. J.D. Sibert was born on 18 January 1910 in Alabama. [2] He died on 16 or 17 March 1915, aged five, in Oak Grove and is buried in the Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in DeKalb County. [2][9][10]

ii. Flora Jeanette Sibert was born on 14 February 1912 in Bethleham, DeKalb County, Alabama. [1][3] She died on 4 September 1996. [3] She married Fred E. Whitfield on 18 April 1933 in DeKalb County. [5] Fred was born in 1909 and died in 1969. [2] Fred and Jeanette are buried in the DeKalb Memorial Gardens. [2]

According to the census, in 1950, Fred, aged 41 and born in Alabama, and Jeanette, aged 28 and born in Alabama, lived in Johnson with their son Ronald Ray, aged nine and born in Alabama. Fred was a farmer.

Children of Fred Whitfield and Flora Jeanette Sibert:

iii. Martha Berthel Sibert was born on 11 November 1918 in Alabama. [1] She died on 9 February 2021, aged 102. [2] She married Jay C. Lowery in April 1940. [2][12] Jay, the son of Obil N. and Lena L. (Lockridge) Lowrey, was born on 3 March 1918 in Crossville, DeKalb County, Alabama. [3][13] He died on 12 March 2001. [2][3] Berthel and Jay are buried in the DeKalb Memorial Gardens. [2]

According to the census, in 1940, J.C., aged 22 and born in Alabama, and Berthel, aged 21 and born in Alabama, lived in Albertville, Marshall County. J.C. was a salesman. In 1950, J.C., aged 32 and Berthel, aged 31, lived in Attalla, Etowah County with their son Richard, who had been born in April in Alabama. J.C. managed a grocery store. [7]

Children of Jay C. Lowrey and Martha Berthel Sibert:

Richard Dean Lowrey was born in April 1949. [2] He died on 11 October 2022. [2] He is buried in the DeKalb Memorial Gardens. [2]

iv. Olen Granville Sibert was born on 9 September 1927 in Geraldine. [1][2][3][13] He died on 23 February 1989, aged 61. [2][3] He married Maggie Geneal. [2] She was born in 1930 and died on 3 May 2009. [2] She married second Milford Richards. [2] He died on 9 January 2006. [2] Olen and Maggie are buried in the DeKalb Memorial Gardens. [2]

According to his 10 September 1945 World War II draft registration card, Olen was a high school student, living in DeKalb County. He was five feet, six inches tall and weighted 125 pounds. He had brown eyes, brown hair, and a light complexion. [13]
