I-A-2. MALISSA J. SIBERT (1848–1921), daughter of John Wesley Sibert³ ( David², John David¹)

Malissa J. Sibert was born on 29 March 1848 in Alabama. [1][2] She died on 10 July 1921 in Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri. [1][2] She married Martin L. Allen. [1][2] He was born in April 1841 in Fincastle, Virginia. He committed suicide on 20 July 1893 in Galena, Cherokee County, Kansas. Malissa and Martin are buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Galena. [2]

Malissa's death certificate says she was the daughter of John and Nancy (Parker) Sibert and the widow of Martin L. Allen. [1] Her obituary says she died at home on 10 July 1921. She was survived by two daughters, Mrs. Isaac Vincent of Wallace, Idaho, and Mattie Allen of Los Angeles, and two sons, Lee V. Allen of Joplin and John F. Allen of Burke, Idaho. [3]

Martin had a dark complexion, dark hair and hazel eyes. He was five feet, ten inches tall. [4]

The 49th Missouri Infantry Regiment was organized in August and September 1864 to serve for one year. Martin, a 23-year-old farmer born in Fincastle, Virginia, enlisted as a private in Company I of the regiment on 1 December 1864 in Brunswick, Missouri. He signed his recruit's declaration with his mark. The regiment moved south in February 1865 to take part in the Mobile Campaign. During its existence, it lost 100 men, almost all to disease. Martin apparently fell ill or was wounded, as he was sent to a hospital from Dauphine Island, Alabama on 19 March 1865. He was mustered out on 14 June 1865 at Baton Rouge. [4] He filed for a pension as an invalid on 20 November 1882. Malissa filed for a widow's pension on 5 August 1893. [5]

According to the census, in 1870, Martin L., aged 30, and Malissa J., aged 21, lived in Swan, Taney County, Missouri with their children Lee, aged two, and Mark T., aged ten months. Martin was a farmer. In 1880, Martin L., aged 39, and Malissa J., aged 33, lived in Harrison, Boone County, Arkansas with their children Lee V., aged 12; Mark T., aged ten; John F., aged six; and Emma J., aged three. All the children were born on Missouri. Martin was a farmer and Lee and Mark worked on the farm. Malissa had the measles. [6]

Martin's obituary says that at seven o'clock on Sunday evening, 20 July 1893, his family were outside when they heard a shot inside. Martin had shot himself in the head in the kitchen with a shot gun. He was invalid from his time as a soldier, and probably as a result he was incapable of work. He had suffered mental health problems for several years. He left a wife, three boys, and a girl. [7]

In 1900, Malissa, a widow born in March 1848, lived with her son, Lee, in Empire City, Cherokee County, Kansas. In 1910 Malissa, aged 62, lived with her daughter Emma's family in Galena. She had had had seven children and five were living. [6]

It appears that Malissa has no surviving descendants.

Children of Martin L. Allen and Malissa J. Sibert:

i. Lee V. Allen was born in February 1868 in Missouri. He died on 1 November 1932, aged 64 in Jasper County. [1] He was buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Galena. Lee Allen of Winslow, Washington County, Arkansas married first Mary A. Justice of Winslow on 17 April 1895 in Washington County. [8] She was born in August 1869 in North Carolina. Lee V. Allen of Joplin married second Fannie M. Stevens of Joplin on 9 May 1919 in Joplin. [9] He married third Lavina (Collins) Mills. [2] She was born on 18 September 1884 in Kansas and died on 4 October 1931, aged 47, in Joplin. [2] She married first Jackson Grant Mills. [2] He was born on 30 March 1865 in Kansas and died on 28 March 1911 in Jasper County. [2]

Lee's death certificate says he died of chronic myocharditis. He had worked as an attendant in a lead furnace. He was a widower and there was no record of his birth or parents. [1]

According to the census, in 1900, Lee, born in February 1868, and Mary, born in August 1869 in North Carolina, lived in Empire City, Cherokee County, Kansas with their son Willie, born in May 1899 in Kansas, and Lee's mother. Lee was a farmer. He and Mary had been married five years. They had had two children, and one was living. In 1910, L.V., aged 42, and Mary, aged 41, lived with their son Willie in Joplin. L.V. was a laborer in a lead smelter. In 1930, Lee V., aged 62, and Lavina C., aged 45, lived in Joplin with Lee's stepson Pinkney E. Burnell, aged 25. Lee had no occupation; Pinkney was a laborer in a lead smelter. [6]

Children of Lee and Mary Allen:

• Willie Allen was born on 17 May 1899 in Empire City. [2] He died on 12 January 1918, aged 18, in Joplin. [2] He was buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery. [2]

ii. Mark T. Allen was born in 1869. He was living in 1880, but probably died before 1910.

iii. John Francis Allen was born on 4 September 1873 in Missouri. [2][10, mother's maiden name Seibert] He died on 23 September 1946, aged 63, in Los Angeles County. [2][10] He married first Lillian Zula Tremain on 23 April 1898. [11] Lillian was born on 21 February 1877 in Kansas. [2] She died on 25 September 1964, aged 87, and is buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, Los Angeles County, California. [2] John and Zula apparently divorced and she married second Amiel William Belau in 1933. [2] John married second Leta Belle Milnes on 18 March 1924 in Los Angeles County, California. [2][12] Leta was born on 21 December 1885 in Dows, Wright County, Iowa and died on 9 February 1979 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. [2] John and Leta are buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion, Wright County, Iowa. [2]

Leta was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Milnes. Her father was killed in a stockyard accident and she and her mother moved to California. She attended a school for the blind. [2]

In 1910, John F., aged 36, and Zula, aged 33, lived in Galena with their children Pearl, aged ten and born in Kansas, and Fred, aged seven and born in Kansas. They had been married for 11 years and had had three children, of whom two were living. John was a miner in a zinc mine and and Zula was a public school teacher. [6]

On 12 September 1918, John was a mine foreman in Shoshone County, Idaho. He was described as tall and slender with dark hair and blue eyes. He was married to Zula. [13]

In 1925, John and Leta B. Allen lived in Compton, Los Angles County. John had a grocery store and gas station. [14] In 1930 John, age 45, and Leta Belle, age 44, lived in Compton. John was a grocer and Leta was a cook. In 1940, John F., aged 56, and Leta Belle, aged 52, lived in Los Angeles. Neither worked and John was described as unable to work. [6]

In 1946, John said he was 58 years old and born in Missouri, but he did not know precisely when and where. He said he He was unemployed. The person who would always know his address was [his mother-in-law?] Mrs. Elizabeth Milnes. [15]

Children of John Frances Allen and Lillian Zula Tremain:

• Ethel Pearl Allen was born on 5 February 1899 in Galena. [2] She died on 6 February 1990, aged 91, in Mesa, Maricopa County, Arizona. [2][16] She married first Palmer O. Amonson on 8 June 1919 in Burke, Washington. [2][17] He was born on 11 January 1894 and died on 5 September 1970, aged 76. [2] Ethel and Palmer divorced, and Ethel married second, as his second wife, Joseph William Bond, Jr. [2] Joseph was born in 29 June 1893 in Mesa and died there on 30 April 1941. [2][18] He married first Florence Ellsworth in 1916. [2] Ethel married third Warren Lowe Walters. [2] He was born on 17 September 1899 in Utah and died on 10 March 1958, aged 58. Ethel and her second two husbands are buried in the City of Mesa Cemetery in Mesa. [2]
  
  In 1920, Palmer, aged 25 and born in Idaho, and Pearl, aged 20 and born in Kansas, lived in Vancouver, Clark County, Washington. Palmer was a laborer in a shipyard. [6] On 21 November 1925, a judge heard how Palmer abused his wife, and granted Pearl a divorce. A Los Angeles Evening Express article provides the details. [19]
  
  In 1930, Joseph Bond, aged 36 and born in Arizona, and Pearl, aged 30 and born in Kansas, lived in Los Angles with their son Palmer, aged nine, and Pearl's widowed mother, Zula, aged 52. Joseph was a house plasterer. In 1940, Joseph, aged 46, and Ethel P., aged 40, lived in Maricopa County with their son, Palmer A., aged 19. Joseph was a plasterer. [6]
  
  According to Joseph Bond's death certificate, he had a wife Pearl Bond and he was a plastering contractor. [18]
  
  According to her obituary, Ethel Pearl Walters was survived by her son Palmer Amundsen. She was a clothing store clerk. [16]
  
  Children of Ethel Pearl Allen and Palmer O. Amonson:
  
  
  • Palmer Ethelburt Amundson was born on 14 May 1920 in Vancouver, Washington. [2][20] He died on 4 April 2001, aged 80. He is buried in the City of Mesa Cemetery. [2]
    
    Palmer's birth certificate says he was the son of Palmer O. and Ethel P. (Allen) Amundsen. His father was a shipyard worker. [20]
    
    Palmer was a radioman on a submarine during World War II. [21]
    
    
• Roy Allen was born on 24 June 1901 in Empire City. [2] He died there on 17 March 1902 and is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery. [2] Roy died when his father's house caught fire. [2]
  
  
• Fred Allen was born about 1903 in Kansas. He probably died young.

iv. Grace Emma Allen was born in February 1877 in Boone County, Arkansas. [2] She died on 3 December 1947, aged 70. [2] She married first Philip Walker Harlan. [2] Philip was the son of David Harlan. [1] He was born on 26 May 1873 in Missouri. [1][2] He died on 6 December 1915, aged 42, in Joplin. [1][2] He is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery. [2] Grace Harlan married second Isaac B. Vincent on 7 June 1916 in Joplin. [2][9] He was born on 2 October 1868. [2] He died on 9 May 1929, aged 60. [2] Grace and Isaac are buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas. [2]

Philip worked in lead and zinc mines and he died of tuberculosis. [1]

In 1900, Philip, born in March 1873 in Missouri, and Emma, born in February 1877 in Arkansas, lived in Empire City with their daughter Eva, born in February 1900 in Kansas. In 1910, Philip, aged 36, and Emma, aged 32, lived in Galena with their daughter, Eva, aged ten and born in Kansas, Emma's mother, and her brother Joe. Philip and Joe were zinc miners. [6]

In 1920, Isaac, aged 52 and born in Iowa, and Grace, aged 40 and born in Arkansas, lived with their daughter, Eva, aged 19, and born in Kansas. Isaac was a stockyard manager. [6]

Grace shows up twice in the 1930 census. In one entry (enumerated 14 April), she lived with her daughter Eva's family in Blackwell, Kay County, Oklahoma. In another (no enumeration date), she was a 52-year-old widowed roomer, living with her sister Pearl, who was a live-in housekeeper for Edward Remelt, in Los Angeles. [6]

Children of Philip Harland and Emma J. Allen:

• Eva Mae Harlan was born on 19 February 1900 in Empire City. [2] She died on 25 April 1976, aged 76. [2] She married Wendall Warren Hamill. [2] Wendall was born on 2 November 1892 in Mayfield, Kansas. [2][22] He died on 2 March 1958, aged 65. [2][22] Eva and Wendall are buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery. [2]
  
  In 1930, Wendall, aged 37 and born in Kansas, and Eva M., aged 30 and born in Kansas, lived in Blackwell with their daughter, Joy E., aged four and born in Oklahoma, and Eva's mother. In 1940, Wendall, aged 47, and Eva, aged 40, lived in Wichita with their daughter, Joy, aged 14. Wendall was a bookkeeper for a refinery. [6]
  
  Wendall's obituary says he was survived by his wife, Eva, and his daughter, Mrs. Joy Safford. [22]

  • Joy Evelyn Hamill was born on 24 October 1925 in Blackwell. [23] She died on 27 September 1999. [23] She married Albert J. Safford on 25 June 1953. [24] Albert was the son of Truman C. and Ellen (Robinson) Safford of Emporia. [24][25] He was born on 10 July 1915. [25][26] He died on 14 September 1981 at the M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston. He was a resident of Wichita at the time. [25][26] He married [first?] Elsie Unknown. At the time of his death, he was married to Kathryn Hunter. [25] Albert left no children. [26]
    
    In 1930, Albert J., aged 14, lived with his parents Truman C. and Ellen Safford in Grant, Lincoln County, Kansas. In 1850, Albert J., aged 37, lived with his wife Elsie C., aged 45, in Wichita. [6] According to his death certificate, he was the president of a glass company. [25]

v. Pearl Mattie Allen was born on 10 August 1883 in Harrison, Boone County, Arkansas. [2] Mattie, as Pearl M. Hitchcock, died on 4 November 1937, aged 54, in Los Angeles. [2][27][28] She married first William Franklin Halterman as his second wife on 4 October 1899 in Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri. [9] William was the son of Christopher and Sarah Halterman. [1] He was born on 12 July 1878 in Indianola, Warren County, Iowa and died on 2 September 1969, aged 91, in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. [1][2] William, the son of Christopher and Sarah Halterman, married first Lillie Maynard on 18 October 1896 in Empire City. [11] Pearl and William divorced, and William married second Sadie Mae Huggins on 20 September 1915 in Los Angeles County. [1][2][12] Mattie, as Pearl Halterman, married second Fred E. Hitchcock on 23 October 1917 in Los Angles County. [12][28] They were apparently divorced by 12 September 1918, when Fred named Mrs. Sarah E. Hitchcock as his contact on his World War I draft registration card. [13] Mattie, as Pearl Hitchcock, married third Mason James Merrihew on 21 March 1921 in Los Angeles County. [12][28] They divorced by 1923, when Mason had remarried. [29]

William's first marriage certificate says he was an 18-year-old miner. Lillie was 16. [11]

According to the census, in 1900, W.F., born in July 1878 in Iowa, and Mattie, born in August 1882, lived in Lowell, Cherokee County, Kansas with W.F.'s uncle [blotched, but probably William] Wright and his wife Sylvania. W.F. was a miner. In 1910 William, aged 30 and born in Iowa, and Mattie P., aged 27 and born in Arkansas, lived in Van Buren, Crawford County, Arkansas with their son, Everett, aged seven[!] and born in Kansas, and William's uncle, William Wright. William [Halterman] and Mattie had been married ten years, and had had three children, but only one survived. William was working as a fireman in the locomotive industry. [6]

William and Mattie divorced by 1915, and in 1920, William was living with his new wife Sadie and their two children in Kansas City. [6] William's death certificate says he was a foreman in the construction industry. [1]

According to the census, in 1930, Pearl Allen, a single 47-year-old, who was born in Kansas[!], lived with Edward Remelt, aged 47, single, and born in New York, and [her sister] Grace Vincent, a 52-year-old widow born in Arkansas. Both Pearl and Grace's father and mother were born in Virginia and Alabama, respectively. Pearl was apparently working as an unpaid housekeeper, apparently in return for board, and Grace was a roomer. [6]

Children of William Franklin Halterman and Pearl Mattie Allen:

• Everett Elwin Halterman was born on 21 October 1900 in Galena. [2][25] He died of stomach cancer on 4 March 1961, aged 60, in Dallas, where he had lived for 34 years. [2][25] Everett, the son of William F. and Mattie Allen, married Martha Neal Thomas on 24 December 1924 in Glenwood, Iowa. [2][30] Martha was the daughter of Charles William and Maria (Hines) Thomas. [30] She was born on 19 February 1902 in Scranton, Greene County, Iowa and died on 25 January 1972, aged 69. [2] Everett and Martha are buried in the Grove Hill Memorial Park in Dallas. [2]
  
  Everett's death certificate says he was the son of William Halterman and Pearl Allen. He was a veteran of World War I. He worked as a master mechanic for Dallas Power & Light. His informant was Mrs. Martha Allen. [25]
  
  Everett had apparently had an encounter with the law when he was 18. He and five other teenagers were arrested following an incident at a youth recreational place and sent to jail. They broke up a bed and used it to pry their way out. They stole a 1958 Chevrolet and were arrested for speeding and sent back to jail. [31]
  
  According to the census, in 1940 Everett, age 39, and Martha, aged 38, lived in Dallas. Neither of them had gone to high school. Everett was a mechanic. [6]
  
  
• Leona Fay Halterman was born on 26 September 1904 in Lowell Township, Cherokee County, Kansas and died on 14 July 1905 in Empire City. [2] She is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery.
  
  
• Unknown Son Halterman was born on 6 June 1906 in Empire City and died there on 30 June 1906. [2] He is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery. [2]

vi. Joseph M. Allen was born on 19 February 1888 in Boone County, Arkansas. [2] He died on 26 March 1914, aged 26, in the Eureka Mine in Miami, Ottawa County, Oklahoma and is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Galena. [1]

In 1910, Joe, aged 22, lived with his sister Emma's family in Galena. He was a zinc miner. [6]

Joseph Allen, a hoister man at the Eureka Mine and a son-in-law of Ed Burnett, was killed in a mining accident. He was being hoisted from the ground with the supervisor at closing time and the hoist jerked the tub they were riding in. Joseph lost his balance and fell down the 212-foot mine shaft. He was survived by his wife, mother, two sisters, and two brothers. [32]
