Captain Thomas Colton (1651–1728), son of George Colton and Deborah Gardner

Sarah Griswold (b. say 1655–1690), daughter of Matthew Griswold and Anne Wolcott


Thomas, the son of George Colton, was born on 1 (3) 1651 in Springfield. [1, 1:13) Captain Thomas Colton died, age 77, on 30 September 1728 in Springfield and was buried in the Longmeadow Cemetery. [1, 3:2300] He married first Sarah Griswold on 11 September 1677 in Springfield. [1,2:1683] He married second Hannah Bliss on 17 December 1691 in Springfield. [1,1:25] Hannah was his stepsister, the daughter of his stepmother Lydia (Wright) (Bliss) (Norton) (Lamb) Colton. [2, 1]

Sarah, the wife of Thomas Colton died [apparently in childbirth] on 12 September 1690 in Springfield. [1, 1:68]

Sarah's parents, Matthew and Anne Griswold of Lyme, gave a 3 June 1696 deed of gift of land to their granddaughters Sarah and Anne Colton. [3]

Children of Captain Thomas Colton and Sarah Griswold:

i. Sarah Colton was born on 25 September 1678. She died on 20 June 1754. She married Samuel Keep.

ii. Anna (Hannah) Colton was born on 27 December 1680 in Springfield. [1, 2:1673] She married Thomas Horton after 14 January 1698 (int.) in Springfield. [1, 1:5]

iii. Ensign Thomas Colton was born on 27 March 1683 in Springfield. [1, 2:1674] He died on 14 August 1760, age 78, in Springfield and is buried in the Longmeadow Cemetery. [1, 3:2295] He married Joanna Warriner on 14 April 1708 in Springfield. [1, 1:135]

iv. Benjamin Colton was born on 19 February 1684 in Springfield. [1, 2:1675] He was “sicke & dyed” on 7 April 1685 in Springfield. [1, 2:1691]

v. Elizabeth Colton was born on 5 April 1686 in Springfield. [1, 1:39] She married Joseph Kellogg, Sr. on 5 July 1701 in Springfield. [1, 1:137]

vi. Matthew Colton was born on 13 February 1687 in Springfield. [1, 1:40]. He was “sicke & dyed” on 6 June 1690 in Springfield. [1,1:68]

vii. Unknown daughter Colton was born on 11 September 1690 and died that day or the next in Springfield. [1, 2:1679]

Children of Captain Thomas Griswold and Hannah Bliss:

viii. William Colton was born on 7 July 1694 in Springfield. [1, 1:44] He married Mary Merrick on 24 January 1716/7 in Springfield. [1, 1:151]

ix. Ebenezer Colton was born on 23 July 1696 in Springfield. [1, 1:49]

x. Joseph Colton was born on 27 August 1698 in Springfield. [1, 1:51] He died on 10 September 1698 in Springfield. [1, 1:70]

xi. Isaac Colton was born on 10 October 1700 in Springfield. [1, 1:59]

xii. Hannah Colton was born on 11 July 1703 in Springfield. [1, 1:56]

xiii. Dinah Colton was born on 31 January 1705/6 in Springfield. [1, 1:77] She was sick and died on 5 May 1706 in Springfield. [1, 1:121]

xiv. Abner Colton was born on 17June 1709 in Springfield. [1, 1:83] He was sick and died on 24 February 1709/10 in Springfield. [1, 1:123]
