26. Deacon John Cummings (1682–1759), son of John Cummings and Elizabeth Kinsley

John Cummings was born on 7 July 1682 in Woburn. [1] Deacon John Cummings died on 27 April 1759, age 76, in Westford. [2] John Cummings of Charlestown married Elizabeth Adams on 3 October 1705 in Chelmsford. [2, 172]

27. Elizabeth Adams (1680–1759), daughter of Pelatiah Adams

Elizabeth Adams was born on 26 April 1680 in Chelmsford. [2, 9] Elizabeth, the widow of Deacon John Cummngs, died on 30 April 1759, age 78, in Westford. [2]


John was chosen the first deacon on 7 December 1727 in the church in Westford. [5] John was chosen the moderator of the first town meeting held in Westford on 2 March 1729/30 and he was chosen as one of the five selectman at the meeting. [3, 22]

i. Elizabeth Cummings was born on 29 August 1706 in Chelmsford.

ii. Mary Cummings was born on 5 July 1708 in Chelmsford. [3] She died on 3 November 1778. She married Timothy Read on 20 November 1732 in Westford. [2] Timothy, the son of Thomas and Sarah (Fletcher) Read, was born on 21 March 1714 in Westford and died on 26 April 1799. [6]

Mary Cummings was admitted to communion on 17 March 1723 in the church in Westford. [5]

iii. John Cummings was born on 1 June 1710 in Chelmsford. He was admitted to communion on 7 December 1729 in the church at Westford. On 23 March 1740, John Cummings, Jr. was dismissed from the church at Westford to the church at Groton. He may be the John Cummings who died on 20 September 1789, age 79, and who married Sarah Lawrence. This John is buried in the Pine Ridge Cemetery in Hancock, Hillsborough, New Hampshire. [7]

iv. William Cummings was born on 27 July 1712 in Chelmsford. He married Lucy Colburn of Dunstable by an intention of 12 July 1734 in Westford.

v. Thomas Cummings was born on 4 August 1714 in Chelmsford. He died on 13 November 1787, age 73, in Westford. He married Sarah Fasset on 26 September 1733 in Westford. Sarah was born about 1714. She died on 13 January 1800, age 86, in Westford.

Thomas Cummings owned the covenant at the church in Westford on 9 June 1734. Thomas and Sarah, his wife, were admitted to communion on 6 September 1741 in the church at Westford.

vi. Abigail Cummings was born in November 1716 in Chelmsford. She married Samuel Read on 23 November 1732 in Westford.

vii. Samuel Cummings born on 16 November 1718 in Chelmsford. He married Sarah Spaulding of Chelmsford by an intention of 21 October 1741 in Westford.

Samuel Cummings was admitted to communtion on 9 December 1739 in the church at Westford. He was dismissed and recommended on 8 May 1757.

viii. Ephraim Cummings was born on 13 November 1720 in Chelmsford. He died on 17 January 1775, age 54, in Westford. He married Abigail Hildreth on 12 October 1742 in Westford.

ix. Bridget Cummings was born on 15 November 1722 in Chelmsford. She died on 19 October 1778, age 55, in Westford. She married Lieutenant Moses Parker.
