JOHN TRAIN (c. 1609–1681)

MARGARET DIX (c. 1616–1660)

John Train was born about 1609. He died on 29 January 1680/1 in Watertown. [1] He married first Margaret Dix. He married second the widow Abigail Bent on 12 October 1675 in Watertown. [1] She died on 17 August 1691 in Watertown. [1]

Margaret Dix was born about 1616. She died on 18 December 1660 in Watertown, age about 44. [1]

Husbandman Percival Greene, his wife, and his two servants—John Train, age 25 and Margaret Dix, age 18—enrolled at London as passengers on the Susan & Ellen on 18 April 1635. [2] As no record has been found of Margaret Dix in New England, and as she sailed on the same ship as John Train, who later had a wife named Margaret of the same age, it is presumed that Margaret Dix and Margaret, wife of John Train, are the same person. [3][4]

John was referred to as a husbandman, planter, and yeoman. [1] He took the oath of fidelity in 1652. [1] He held a few offices in Watertown: fence viewer in 1651, surveyor of highways in 1652, 1665, and 1674, and constable in 1663. [1]

John made his will on 21 January 1680/1; it was proved on 4 April 1681. He mentioned his wife Abigail Train, his sons John and Thomas Train, his daughters Elizabeth Stratton, Rebecca "Basto," Sarah Cole, Abigail Towning, Hannah Child, and Mary Memory. He also left bequests to his his grandchildren, naming Mary Memory's children John, Samuel, Joseph and Mary Memory. He named his sons his executors. Inventory was taken on 3 February 1680/1 and included real estate worth £303-10-00. [1]
