The English Ancestry of Martha Reade
Generation One
John Cooke of Pebmarsh, co. Essex
John Syday died in 1539. [4] He married Helen ___. [4] John Syday of Pebmarsh was a wealthy yeoman. [4]
Generation Two
Robert Cooke was born about 1515 and died before 1559. [4] He married Joan Syday, the daughter of John Syday. [4] Johane Cooke of Pebmarsh made her will on 17 November 1561; it was proved on 12 January 1561/2. [4]
Generation Three
Thomas Cooke, the Elder of Pebmarsh, co. Essex, yeoman, made his will on 30 August 1621; it was proved on 26 November 1621. He mentions his son-in-law Edmund Reade and his daughter, the wife of Edmund. He left Martha Reade, now the wife of ___ Epps of London, his grandchild. [1]
Generation Four
Edmund Reade died after 20 November 1623. He married Elizabeth Cooke. She married second Reverend Hugh Peter. [4]
Edmund Reade of Wickford, co. Essex made his will on 20 November 1623 and mentions Daniel Epps and Martha, his daughter, and their children Elizabeth and Daniel Epps. [1]
Children of Edmund and Elizabeth Reade: births (presumably) and baptisms in North Benfleet, co. Essex [2]
i. Edmund Reade was buried on 30 March 1600 in North Benfleet. [2]
ii. Maria Reade was born on 8 June 1597 and baptized on 26 June 1597. She was buried on 13 April 1602 in North Benfleet. [2]
iii. Margaret Reade was born on 11 July 1598 and baptized on 16 July 1598. She married ___ Lake. [2]
iv. William Reade was born on 28 October 1599 and baptized on 1 January 1599/1600.
v. Martha Reade was born on 13 July 1602 and baptized on 22 July 1602.
vi. Thomas Reade was born on 2 January 1605/6 and baptized on 7 January 1605/6. He was buried on 15 September 1607 in North Benfleet. [2]
vii. Samuel Reade was born on 23 July 1609 and baptized on 31 July 1609.
viii. Thomas Reade was baptized on 15 August 1612.
Daniel Epps was buried on 26 June 1630 in St. Olave, Hart Street, London. [1]
Martha Reade was the daughter of Edmund Reade and Elizabeth Cooke. She was born on 13 July 1602 and baptized on 22 July 1602 in North Benfleet, co. Essex. [2] She married first Daniel Epps. [3] She married second Samuel Symonds. [3] Samuel was the Deputy Governor of Massachusetts.
Walter Goodwin Davis provides an English ancestry for Martha Reade. [4]
Mistress Rebecca Symonds [Samuel Symond's third wife] referred to James Chute as her son Chute at the March 1665 quarterly court in Ipswich. [5, 3: 244]
Samuel Symonds, Jr, gentleman of Ipswich, made his will on 18 December 1668 and it was proved by Daniel Epps, Jr., upon the oath of James Chute (taken 29 November 1669). He left a bequest to his sister Elizabeth, the wife of Daniel Epp [5, 4: 205]
Children of Daniel Epps:
i. Elizabeth Epps was born about 1622. She married James Chute.
ii. Daniel Epps was born about 1624/5. He died on 8 January 1692 in Ipswich. [6] He married his stepsister Elizabeth Symonds. She died on 7 May 1685, age about 61. [6]
Daniel deposed he was about 50 in November 1675, about 52 in November 1676 and March 1677, about 53 in March 1678, and about 54 in September 1678. [5, 6: 10, 85, 221, 247, 418; 7: 93]
Daniel presumable came to New England with his mother and stepfather. [3]
Daniel is usually referred to as Mr. Daniel Epps, but sometimes as Captain Daniel Epps.
Daniel was on the trial jury at the Essex county quarterly courts nine times between September 1660 and September 1682. [5, 2: 225; 4: 326; 5: 1; 6: 1, 318, 403; 7: 1, 332; 8: 373] He was on the grand jury in September 1663 and September 1668. [5, 3: 84; 4: 46]
Daniel squabbled with Henry Bennett of Ipswich.
The June 1680 court granted administration on the estate of Mr. Samuel Symonds to Mr. Daniel Epps, the husband of Samuel's eldest daughter Elizabeth, Samuel's eldest son Harlackendine Symonds, and Samuel's widow Mrs. Rebecca Symonds. [5, 7: 397]
iii. Martha Epps was buried on 31 May 1628 in St. Olave, Hart St., London. [1]
iv. Mary Epps was baptized on 8 October 1629 in St Olave. [1] She married Peter Duncan of Dorchester and Gloucester. [1]
