LIONEL CHUTE (d. 1644/5)

THOMASIN BARKER

Lionel died between 4 May 1644 and 25 February 1644/5 He married first Thomasin Barker on 19 November 1612 in Belstead, Suffolk. [1] He married second Rose ___. Fiske argues that Rose might have been the Rose Clarke, daughter of Stephen Clarke, who was baptized on 11 Mar 1597/8 in Theydon Garnon, Essex. [1]

It was thought Lionel had only one wife, Rose, but the parish registers of Belstead, Suffolk indicate he had an earlier wife, Thomasin Barker. The parish of Belstead is six miles from Dedham, where Lionel's first son was baptized fourteen months after his marriage. [1]

According to an old pedigree, Lionel married a daughter of Robert Baker. [2] It is not known if Thomasin's father was named Robert. Many sources, not realizing Lionel had an earlier wife, identified Rose as Rose Baker. Rose may have married second Matthew Whipple. [3] There is no apparent record of this marriage, but a circumstantial argument has appeal. [1] If Fiske's conjecture about Rose's identity is correct, she is the sister of Matthew Whipple's sister-in-law Susan (Clarke) Whipple. Matthew, the son of Matthew, was born about 1590 in Bocking, Essex and died on 28 September 1647 in Ipswich. [3] He married first Ann Hawkins on 7 May 1622 in Bocking. [3]

Lionel came to New England about 1635 and settled in Ipswich. [2]

A grammar school was set up in Ipswich in 1636 and was kept by Lionel Chute. [4]

Lionel was a commoner of Ipswich on "the last day of the last month, 1641". [5]

Lionel Chute, schoolmaster of Ipswich, made his will on 4 September 1644. It was proved on 7 November 1645. His main heirs were his wife Rose and son James. He left his friend Joseph Morse five shillings and the poor of the church of Ipswich 20 shillings. Among other things, his left his son Joseph clothing which "was his brother Nathaniells." He named his wife Rose his executrix. His inventory was taken on 25 June 1645. Lionel was not a wealthy man, net of debts his estate amounted to only about 84 pounds. [6]

ii. Mary Chute was baptized on 23 November 1619 in Dedham. She probably died by 4 September 1644. [1]
