Thomas Thaxter (d. 1654)

Thomas Thaxter was died on 4 February 1653/4. [1, 103]

Elizabeth ___ drowned in a well on 17 July 1660. [1, 111][2] The widow Thaxter married second William Ripley on 29 September 1654 in Hingham. [3, 2: 181][4] She married third as his second wife John Dwight on 20 January 1657/[8?] in Dedham. [2] He was born about 1601 and died on 24 January 1660/1 in Dedham. [2] He married first Hannah ___ by 1626. [2] She died on 5 September 1656 in Dedham. [2]

On 18 July 1660, the Reverend Peter Hobart wrote, "Elizebeth sometimes wife to Tho Thaxter & to william Ripley then to Mr Dwight at Dedham was drowned in a well." [1, 111] On 24 October 1660 John Hull—the Boston mint master—wrote in his diary, "About the 6th month last, there was likewise another woman, well reputed of, drowned herself at Dedham, - one Goody Dwite. Two aweful strokes unto all that knew them; and no little scandal, by accident, to religion; and a great brand of infamy upon themselves. This is not the death of the righteous." [5]

Thomas and [his son] John Thaxter were in Hingham by 1638. [4]

Thomas was a linen weaver. [6] He was a freeman in 1642. [6]

Inventory on Thomas's estate was presented and sworn to by Elizabeth Thaxter on 9 March 1653/4. It amounted to 163 pounds. [7]

Children of Thomas Thaxter and Elizabeth Unknown:

i. Captain John Thaxter died on 14 March 1686/7. He married Elizabeth Jacob on 4 December 1648 in Hingham. [1, 21][3, 2:181][8] Elizabeth, the daughter of Nicholas Jacob and Mary Gilman, was born say 1634. [8] She married second Daniel Cushing on 23 March 1690/1 in Hingham. [8]

On Monday, 14 March 1686/7, Samuel Sewall wrote in his diary, "Capt. Thaxter of Hingham sinks down and dyes as went to fodder his Cattel." [9]

John was a selectman for eight years and a representative to the General Court in 1666. [6]

iii. Thomas Thaxter died on 6 January 1646/7, probably in Hingham. [1, 19]

iv. Sarah Thaxter died on 1 September 1678 in Medfield. The married Captain Thomas Thurston.

v. Samuel Thaxter was born on 19 May 1641. [1, 13] He married first Abigail Church on 19 December 1666 in Hingham. [3, 2: 182] Abigail was the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth (Warren) Church. [6] She died on 22 October 1667 in Hingham. [3, 1: 4] He married second Deborah Lincoln, the daughter of Thomas and Avith (or Anis) (Lane) Lincoln. [6]
