Nicholas (La) Groves (d. 1685/1704)

Hannah Sallows (1654–aft. 1704), daughter of Robert Sallows and Freeborn Wolfe

Bass River in Salem became a town on 3 November 1668, called Beverly.

Nicholas (La) Groves died between 1 July 1685 and 7 February 1703/4. He married Hannah Sallows, by 1672.

Nicholas's origins are unknown. He might have been of French protestant origin. The "La" before his name was discarded by the second generation.

Hannah, the daughter of Robert and Freeborn Sallows was born on 9 September 1654 in Salem. [1] She was baptized with her siblings, as the child of Sister Sallo's, on 4: 5 (July) 1664 in the First Church of Salem. [2] She died after 7 February 1703/4.

Hannah is referred to as Hannah Groves, the sister of Robert Sallows and daughter of Robert Sallows in a 22 June 1698 deed. [3]

Nicholas was a seaman. [3] He was on a committee that appraised a sail and rope on 8: 8 [October] 1677. [4, 6: 349]

Nicholas was a signer of a 1668 petition against imports to the general court. [3]

On 23 (4) [June] 1667, Peter Wolfe, Martha Wolfe, and Hannah Sallows were among those who petitioned for a church at Bass River. On 20 September 1667 they signed the church's covenant. [5]

Testifying in the case of Hannah Gray—presented to the court for lascivious carriages—on 12: 11: 1673 [January 1673/4], Hannah Grove said that she was about 19 and that she had seen Hannah Gray riding astride her master's mare, and also that she had lived with her one winter. [4, 5, 291]

On 1 July 1685 John Black, acting as executor of the will of "my father Wolfe," sold land to Nicholas. [3]

Hannah is probably the Hannah Grover, daughter of Sister Black, who owned the covenant on 29 7 [September] 1672 in the church in Beverly. [5]

On 7 February 1703/4, Peter Groves, Freeborn Groves, Benjamin and Susanna Patch of Beverly, and Robert and Hannah Moulton of Salem, children of Nicholas Groves, deceased, sold their interest in Nicholas's land to their brother John Groves of Beverly. That day, John granted his mother Hannah a life interest in his interest in this land. [3]
