PHINEHAS ADAMS (1726–1779), son of William Adams and Susannah Woodward

LYDIA FITCH (bp. 1734–1820), daughter of Colonel Jabez Fitch and Lydia Gale


Phineas [!] Adams, the son of William (Richard, James, John), was born on 7 September 1726 in Norwich, New London County, Connecticut. [1] Phinehas, the son of William, was baptized on 6 November 1726 in the Newent Congregational Church in Lisbon, New London County. [2] Mr. Phinehas Adams died on 7 January 1779 in Norwich. [1] He married Lydia Fitch of Canterbury, Windham County, Connecticut on 31 December 1751 in Canterbury or Norwich. [3][4]

Lydia, the daughter of Jabez and Lydia Fitch, was baptized on 17 January 1734 in Canterbury. [3] She died on 14 July 1830.

Phinehas was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

Phinehas's gravestone in the Baldwin Cemetery in Canterbury says that he died on 7 January 1779, age 52. [5][6] There is another stone with a Revolutionary War marker that says, "Phinehas Adams Capt. Ensign's Co. died Jan. 7, 1779." [6] Lydia is buried close to him; her gravestone says she died on 14 July 1820, age 85. Phinehas's mother is buried between them. [6]

Phinehas made his will on 30 December 1778; it was proved on 8 February 1779. He names his wife Lydia; his sons William, Asahel, Phinehas, Roger, Jabez and Fitch; his daughters Abigail, Wealthy, Lydia, and Alice; his friend Benjamin Morse, Jr., and his [unnamed] mother. A 28 September 1779 division was among his wife Lydia, his sons William, Asahel, Phinehas, Roger, Jabez, and Fitch; and his daughters Abigail, Wealthy, Lydia, and Alice. [7]

On 15 March 1779 Lydia Adams of Norwich and Jabez Fitch of Canterbury were made guardians of Lydia and Alice. William Adams of Norwich and Jabez Fitch of Canterbury were made guardians of Jabez and Fitch; Phinehas and Roger chose their brother William to be their guardian. [7]

i. Deacon William Adams was born on 17 October 1752. He was baptized on 22 October 1752. Deacon William Adams died on 8 December 1840 in Lisbon. [2][6] He married Phillis Ensworth on 18 December 1776 in Lisbon. [8] Phillis, the daughter of Jabez and Mehitable Ensworth, was baptized on 3 June 1753 in Canterbury. [9] She died on 30 March 1834, age 81. [5][6]

William and Phillis are buried in the Baldwin Cemetery. William's gravestone says, "Revolutionary War William Adams Capt. Steven's Co. Died Dec. 8, 1840 age 88." [6]

William Adams of Lisbon, age 79, testified about his Revolutionary War service on 24 August 1832. He said he enlisted in a Connecticut foot company under the command of Major Obadiah Johnson on 13 May 1775 as a sergeant and served at Cambridge until 16 December of that year. He re-enlisted on 1 September 1776 in Captain Moses's company, Zadiel Rogers's Connecticut regiment. They rode to Stamford and then went to New York where he was chosen a sergeant major. He served 12 weeks. His request for a pension was allowed. [10]

ii. Asahel Adams was born on 13 September 1754. He was baptized on 22 September 1754. He died on 25 May 1821. He married Olive Avery. [11] Olive, the daughter of Jonathan and Dorothy (Denison) Avery, was baptized on 29 May 1763 in Norwich. [9] She died, probably of typhoid, on 11 April 1813.

Asahel enlisted in the Revolutionary Army from Norwich in 1775 in the the Seventh Regiment, Continental Line on 5 May 1777. He transferred to "The Guards" on 1 April 1778 and served until the close of the war. He was discharged on 5 May 1781. He was with Washington at Valley Forge, crossing the Delaware river, and the Battle of Trenton. [11]

Asahel and Olive are buried in the Girard Liberty Union Cemetery in Girard, Trumbell County, Ohio. Asahel's gravestone says, "Mr Asahel Adams formerly of Canterbury Conn. died May 25th 1821." Olive's describes how she and two of their children died within days of each other: "Mrs Olive Adams wife of Mr Asahel Adams died April 21, 1813 aged 50 years Also Mason, died April 11, 1813, age 20 years. And Olive, died April 11, 1813, age 18 years. Son and daughter of Asahel and Olive Adams." [6]

There was a typhoid epidemic in Girard in 1813. [12]

iii. Abigail Adams was born on 7 December 1756. She was baptized on 23 January 1757. She died on 25 October 1798. [6] She married Septimus Lathrop. [9] Septimus, the son of Elisha Lathrop, was born in 1756 in Norwich and died on 12 October 1819 in Lisbon. [6][9] Septimus and Abigail are buried in the Read and Herskell Cemetery in Lisbon. [6]

iv. Lydia Adams was born on 22 December 1758. She died on 16 February 1759 in Norwich. [1]

v. Wealthean Adams was born on 22 February 1760. She was baptized on 24 February 1760. Wealthy Adams married Joseph Bishop on 1 May 1783 in Lisbon. [8] Joshua [!] was born on 14 January 1762 in Norwich and died on 4 May 1843. [9]

vi. Phinehas Adams was born on 17 August 1762. He was baptized on 14 November 1762. He died on 30 December 1830 in Lisbon. [8] He married Lydia Bishop on 4 April 1790 in Lisbon. [8] Lydia, the daughter of Nathaniel, was born on 6 May 1767. [9] Lydia, the widow of Phinehas, died on 9 March 1831 in Lisbon. [8]

vii. Roger Adams was born on 6 November 1764. He was baptized on 10 February 1765. He married second Polly Willoughby on 7 May 1793 in Norwich. [9]

viii. Doctor Jabez Adams was born on 23 August 1768. He was baptized on 30 October 1768. He died on 24 May 1848. He Lucy Unknown. She was born on 27 August 1772 and died on 11 January 1817.

Jabez's gravestone in the Olde Mansfield Cemetery in Mansfield, Tolland County, Connecticut says, "Doct. Jabez Adams died May 24, 1848 aged 80 years." His wife is buried near him; her gravestone says, "In memory of Mrs Lucy Adams wife of Doctor Jabez Adams born August 27, 1772 died Jan 11, 1817." [6]

ix. Fitch Adams was born on 20 January 1772. He was baptized on 26 April 1772. He died on on 11 February 1837. He married Mary Bacon.

x. Lydia Adams was born on 4 May 1774. [4] She was baptized in June 1774 in the Newent Congregational Church. [2] Lydia of Lisbon married Thomas Sergeant of Springfield, Massachusetts on 3 October 1795 in Lisbon. [2]

xi. Alice Adams was born on 8 October 1776. [4] She was baptized in 1777 in the Newent Congregational Church. [2] She died on 3 December 1812 in Scotland. [9] Alice of Lisbon married Simon Tracy Rudd of Windham on 19 September 1802 in Lisbon. [2] Simeon [!], the son of Deacon Jonathan and Esther (Tyler) Rudd, was born on 1 September 1768 in Windham.
